Tor the benefit of readers and advertisers
alike, The Star will be published to-morrow
in doable or eight-page form. It will be an
unusually attractive and interesting number.
The pluck and enterprise of the Chicago prose
are. indeed, fitting type* of the wonderful ele
ment* which will lift the new ont of the dust
ai d s*hcs of the old Chicago. In two hours, on
Monday, alter the ErrniPi Journal office wiis
destroyed, Hon. Chaa. Wilaon, its proprietor,
Issued an extra from a job office on the west
side giving fall details of the fire up to 1 p. m. of
that day, and announcing in the first line "that
Chicago was burning up." The Tiati building
was consumed In the forenoon of Monday, bat
at noon Mr. Storey telegraphed to B. Hoe <& Co.,
New York, for an eight-cylinder press, which
was shipped on Tuesday! Wednesday and yes
terday all the papers reappeared. The Chicago
Tuluat of yesterday has the following edito
rial :
??Cheer np! In the m>d?t of calamity without
parallel in the world's history, looking upon the
a.-hes of thirty years's accumulation, the neople
of this once "beautiful city are woolvea that
Chicago shall rise again with vigor.
"With ?jm.imi, urn or?T/*).0n0,0()0 of onr hard
earned property swept away in a few hours, the
beiirts ot onr men and women are still brave,
and they look into the future with undaunted
hearts.
"As there has never been such a calamity so
has there never been such cheerful fortitude In
the face of deaolation and ruin.
"Already contracts have been made for re
building some of the bnrned blocks, and the
clearing awav of the debris will begin to-day if
the beat la so far subdued that the charred mate
rial can be handled. Field, Letter & Co., and
John Farwell A Co., will commence business to
day. The money and securities in the banks
are safe. The railroads are working with all
their energies to bring us out of affliction.
"The r**?.i*w>.noo ot capital invested in these
ruins are bound to see ns through. They hare
been bulit with special reference to a great com
mercial want at this place, and cannot fail to
sustain it. i
" As Chicago must rise again, we do not be
little the calamity that has fallen upon ns. The
world has probably never seen the like of it;
certainly p t since Moscow bnrned.
" Ten or twenty years may be reoulred to re
construct onr fair city, but capital will rebuild
it, and fire-proof will be forthcoming.
" The losses we have suffered must be borne,
but the place, time and men are here. Com
mence at the bottom and work np again?not at
the bottom either?for we have credit in every
land, and the experience ot' one building of Chi
cago to help ns.
" Let us all cheer up. save what is yet left,
and we shall come ont right. The Christian
world is coming to onr relief?the worst is al
ready over. In a few (lavs moru the danger*
will be passed, and we can resume the battle of
life with Christian faith and Western grit. Let
us all cheer ap."
The brntal -tndcowardly system of " haiing"?
the persecution of freshmen by sophomores at our
colleges?wh'ch was imported into this country
from Great Britain, has already been tolerated
too long, anu President McCosh, of Princeton
College, deserves credit for the bold stand he has
taken ti suppress It in that institution. The
bullying of small boys by larger ones Is neither
chivalrous nor manly, and the wonder is tha*
anything so repngnant to our American ideas of
fair play, idiould be practised by the stronger or
submitted to by the weaker youths. Prof. Mc
C<*h is a Scotchman, adroit and clear-hea<led,
and no doubt weighed the effect of his action
before be opened the campaign. It is to be
hoped be will be sustained by the community,
and that others occuping like responsible posi
tions will imitate his example. He suspended
*ct? ral young " gentlemen" of Princeton for
hazing new comers, and their companions
showed their disapproval of the righteous sen
tence by stoning the windows of some of the
prol?r?rs and absenting themselves from reci
tatirna. Tin Br young ?? gentlemen" should be
promptly exj-elltd.
Those who know best give the satisfactory as
surance that the Chicago disaster is not of such
magnitude in a business sense as to warrant ap
pt? hei'sions of scarcity In the articles Oi bread
stufls. There are other cities beside the Garden
City capable ?>f storing and shipping to the At
lantic st-aboard the products of the West. Mil
waukie, Kaelne and Cleveland are fully equal to
the emergency, and are prepared to send all the
wheat and grain now in stock and ready for
sail m< nt to the ports and <kpots of the East
So well is this understood that the price of wheat
and grain has only advanced from four to five
cents since the announcement of the partial
destruction of the Chicago means of transporta
tion. and the market i* now rr i?>rted as flat.
The meaning of the word ''regenerate" in the
Fpisecpal baptismal service is the point upon
ahich there has been seme dissension, the most
notable case being that of Kcv. Mr. Cheney, of
Chicago, who refused to use the word. Yester
day the House of Bishops, in seaden in Balti
more, agreed to the interpretation of it accepted
by moderate churchmen?that it is not so "used
as to determine that a moral change in the sub
ject of hapttsm is wrought by the Sacrament."
The declaration was signed by all the bishops,
and was communicated to the House of Clerical
and Lay Deputies ror the Information of that
body.
The fate of Chicago ought to make the people
of Washington better satisfied than ever with
their system of wide streets, the most perfect
protection against extensive comlagrations.
Alex. H. Stephens says be never yet has se?n a
single article of his republished in a single radi

Dear Sir: I have given your BALM OFLIFKfor

effects. It is a healthful wash for both the scalp and

the system when exhausted from overwork is most
delightful. I have not used it except as a wash, hat
on your recommendation, and from the faith its use,
thus far . has secured from me, 1 should feel great
confidence in taking It as a medicine, according to
your directions. Very respectfully yours.
