Attack cpon a Journalist This morning about 11 o'clock, Judge Dent, brother of Mrs. President Grant, visited the Capital office, on Uth street, and on inquiring for Mr. Reed, one of the editors, was directed to his room, up stairs. Ca.ling Mr. Reed's attention to an article in yesterday's Capital, he asked who the author was. Mr. Reed replied that he was re sponsible for it; whereupon Judge D. pro nounced it false, and called upon Mr. Reed to defend himself. Then raising a walking stick, he struck Mr. Reed several times over the head, breaking the cane. Mr Reed by this time was on his feet, and, seizing the judge, a scuttle eu buctl lor the {>osses8iGi> of tho cane, or tlio rem nantof it in the hands of the latter, At this juncture some of the start of the paper who ware down stairs, hearing the noise of the scuiHe, came up and separated the combatants. Officer Roderick being near &t hand was called in and took the assailant into custody, and tiled information in the |?olice court charging Mr. Dent with assault and battery on Henry Heed. The hearing was postjoned" until to-morrow, Mr. Dent entering into personal recognizance in the sum of ?200 for his appearance to answer. Mr. Reed received two scalp wounds and a cut near the left eye, which is somewhat bruised, the wound being probably made by tho splintered end of the cane after it was breken. The above is a history of the case, as state ! Itetore the Police Court to-day. Mr. Reed and his friends assert that the assault was made without any explanation except the question asked by Judge Dent, as to the responsibility of the paper for what it had printed. After Mr. Reed had answered Judge Dent's interrogatory in the affirmative, he a-serts that the ju lee seized his (Mr. Reed's) hickory cane lving oa the table, and without a word of explanation began to belabor htm with it over the heAd. Mr. Reed turther says that Judge D. did not call upon him to defend himself, but assaulted him a* he was sitting with his feet cramped under the table, and that for a moment or two he wa, unable to offer any resistance to the blows showered upon him. THE ATTICLK THAT CAfRED Till AFFRAY. The follow'ng is the article in the Capital fiat led to the visit of Judge Dent to that office. Inquest is made in the New York Fun lor Mr. J. H. Withey, banker, of Port Byron New \ork. It appears that William J. Farrand re ceived from President Grant the appointment as consul at Callao, in consideration for wl.ich be naid in cash to Louis Dent, a brother. <n law or General Grant, f wo thousand live hun dred dollars, and to General F. T. Dent, also a brother-in-law of the President, one thousand d liars. Afterwards Mr. Farrand negotiated farther wlih the Dental brothers-in-law for tho appointment of Mr. Withev as commissioner so settle the claims of citizens of the United States against Peru, for which he paid to (Jen Cfal F. T. Dent, brother-in-law as aforesaid, the sum of three thousand dollars in cash at the Astor House in New York. It appears, how ever, that although the bargain was completed ami the consideration paid, the office was given to another, and Farrand and Withey lost the opportunity of playing Into each other's hands which it wooid hare afforded. Upon this the Sun says: " Now the unsettled question on whleh in formation has been h<med irons Mr. Withey is not whether General Grant's brothec*-ln-law sold these appointments for money, for that point ia already established and admitted; l>ut whether the three thousand dollars paid to Dent for Withey'? appointment as commissioner was really the money of Withey or the money of Farrand. On this question Mr. Withey might cast a food deal of light, and we trust he will not continue to withhold it" WHAT OEM. DENT SATS. Gen. Dest, on being Interviewed this after noon, warmly denied the statements in the Cap ital. He states that his on?y connection with the matter was that Farrand was Introduced to him by his brother (Judge Dent) as an old friend from California, with ? request that the general should see that the payers of Mr. Far rand were put before the President. The pa Crs of Farrand were handed to the President Gen. Dent. Farrand was endorsed by the republicans as a firm republican and sup povcer of the administration, and by the democrats as a man suitable for the Kfton. When the President read them and rd ihe case he stated that he would bring the matter to the attention of Secretary Fish, which be did, and as a vacancy was aw>ot to occur at Callao by the transfer or the Consul then there, the appointment of Mr. Farrand was made. As to meeting Farrand at the Aster House in New York and receiving from him ?3,009 to secure the appointment of Withey as Peruvian claims commissioner, General Dent says he never saw Farrand in New York, and never exchanged more than twenty words with bin, and that npon the occasion when he was Introduced by his brother in the ante-room at the White House. STOWB'S FLORIDA B<>M*C. "Goin' to land here'.' Well, I hope you'll find the old ladv in good humor. i'hey say shs' awful ^Tisppi^h with callers s^mct'mes.** '1 lie speaker was a Georgia preacher of th '' cracker persuasion?tank and yell-?w?who with his lank and yellow wife h i.l been wintering at. Green Spring, Florida, and drinking the sulpb'ir water l'or their livers' sake. The person ad dressed was the tinders gred, snd the scene the gangplank of the little steamer I) irliugton, t!ie shore-end of which plank wa^ then upon th * little pier at Mandarin, the Flori ! i residence of Wis. Harriet Bcecher Stowe. Mrs. Stowe, like iho overrun rural gentleman in the l'arce, has the disadvantage of living at just ?'a convenient distahc b from the citt.'' soiue hfteen miles above Jacksonville, and as about the first inquiry of the thirty or forty thousand visitors who now "do" the St. .John's river annually is for Mrs. Stowe'* place, it hap pens that not only are there a good many lorg nettes leveled at Mandarin from the river boat -*, but a good many people land there, an 1 exer cise their lion-hunting mania in a way to cause tlie subject no little annoyance. I have heard various instances of the pertinacity of callers, who without credentials or any ciaim- whatever npon Mrs. Stowe's attention, make themselves quite at home upon the premises, helping them selves to oranges, breaking oft flowers and twigs as mementos, pulling aside curtain* and peer ing into windows over Mrs. Stowe's shoulders when she is writing; and with some the spirit of research carries them around to the kitchen to <inotion the servants :is to the housekeeping ar rangements. It would scarcely be {HMsible for a woman?and a Beecher?not to resent imper tinence* of this kind, to the extent, at least, of shutting the window in the face of the offenders: but, ?>n the other hand, I heard on all sides ac knowledgments ot the courtesy with which self respecting visitors are treated at Mandarin. In fact, the people of Florida are great believers In Mrs. Stowe, as they should be, a-her bright and eloquent descriptions of Florida life and scenery have done more to call attention to the interesting tcatures of the State than any other canst. Hut to return lo the gang-plank of the Dar lingtoii;?being provided with a kind letter of introduction to Mrs. Stowe from a literary friend, I concluded, despite the warning ot mv Cracker fellow-traveler, to at least pay mv resnects to the author of ?? Uncle Tom s Cabin," and, as the result, passed an exceedingly pleas* ant day. " M AKDA RI H" i' little more than a boat-landing?the first on the river above Jacksonville?with a store, no hotel, and a straggling line ot houses along the river. A carriage track runs straight up from the little pier to the country and neigh borhood grocery and variety store. A couple of hundred yards to the left Is Mrs. Stowe's modest and picturesque Florida home. I followed a plank-walk through a lux uriant fringe of swamp vegetation, and up a bank to a coffee-colored, many-gabled cottage ? an unpretending wooden structure, such as would cost perhaps S2.U00 in a northern village. It was shaded bv two enormous live oak-, heavily loaded with trailing moss: and up the trunks of these monster oaks crept two ban is of bright green?the Scotch and English ivy.?contrasting in their colors agreeaoly with each other and with the gray rnose and the green of the small willow-shaped leaves of the oaks. Surrounding the house was a grove of orange trees,?round-headed and cabbage shaped, after the fashion of this not particularly grace!ul tree, bnt with the stiffness of their wiggy spray somewhat relieved by the infection of moss caught from the over-hanging oaks The gleam of the white-washed trunks of the orange grove, also, served to set off the sha ly recesses of the cottage verandas with a flavor o' additional cosiness and coolness on this brigh sunny day. Filtering tho shade, there was a puzzling concert trom unseen mocking birds The w hole grove was vocal with them, but no a wing was visible. 1 learned afterwards tha they haunt the orange tree, finJiug a secur< retreat and building-place i* the close inat'od toliage. Mocking bird*, by the way, are rather a drug in Florida. They prey U(ion the small fruits to a devastating extent, and the people don't dote on them, but I sup;>o;e Mrs. Stowe tiiiiiks it tair to divide with them in exchange for their delightful, if not marketable notes, a piquant charm of the Florida mocking bird to the northern ear is tnat its notes are imitations ot the notes of the wild birds of that region. FltOFBKSOIl STOWE. Following the path. 1 came in front of the house. Upon the veranda, comfortably seated In a roomy carpet-chair was a stout, genial looking gentleman?Professor Stowe, though I did not know it at the time; having somehow got the mistaken notion that he was of the thin, dyspeptic type of scholarly men. In a certain leonine port, carriage of the head, abandanc? ot hair, and amplitude of chest, he reminded m of our Walt Whitman and Albert Pike. Pamph lets, magazines and books were scattered ovei the floor of the veranda, or were tucked in th ? I- shaped scroll-work of the wooden columns ot the poieh, tor hamly use. A picturesque fea ture was the manner in which one of the great live oaks just mentioned had elbowed its wav into the >eraiida?in fact, the Utter had been built up around the vast trunk, giving the little brown cottage the appearance ot clinging to the sturdy tree. Opening out upon this porch, with abundant doors, and door-windows, were tw-j parlors, alike cool and pleasant to the eve w iiu llieir tastetul but unpretending decorations native flowers in vases; a tew good engraviu^ and better-class thrum**; books, but not t*s_> many or toostiftlv arianged, and a half-op. ii portfolio disclosing a set of pictures ot Florida flowers, a work ot enthusiastic love with Mrs. Stowe, who by word-painting a* well a? with the I<encil has so vividly illustrated the lloral wcaith that gives Florida its name. A COST LITKRART WORKSHOP. From this cosy liUrary workshop, amidst the live-oaks and orange trees, goes forth for half the year the weekly budget of contribu tions to the Christian L'ni on (or, better, the Betcktr I'nion). of the Stowe Florida colony? Prolessor and Mrs. Stowe, Mrs. Henry Ward Beecher. &c., that have helped so Uugely, un doubtedly to give that patter its extensive parish of 130,000 subscribers. I tound Mrs. Stowe at the river-side, the center of a lively group of young people, superintending the preparations lor a picnic excursion to Julington creek, up the river. She reminds one much of her brother, Henry Ward Heecher, in a face not handsome, but better than handsome, with the same frank directness of manner, and the same gleam of humor and originality about the eye and corners ot the month. FLORIDA PRO AID COS. After the conflicting views 1 had got from land speculators and hotel keepers on the one hand, and disappointed invalids and emigrants on the other, I was glad at Mandarin to get something like a frank, impartial estimate ot the advantages and disadvantages of Florida Mrs. Stowe thinks well of Florida as a health resort for persons of delicate lungs who find the winters of the north toe severe for them. This clam of half-invalids who at the North are Imprisoned within doors during the winter months, to the great detrimeat or their general heaith, undoubtedly And great relief in the mild winter air of Florida, where almost ever day of the season can be spent ia the open air. I doubt, nowever, if she would recommend the Florida climate to those who have disordered livers as T/i .t*Dder lan**- **rof. It isciauued that the sand here is |*>wdered coral, instead Of silex, and is therefore more productive; but it looks to me very much like the genuine New Jersey article. Political Note*. General Woodford and Senator Edmundi are canvsssing together in Yermonr. Senator Trumbull having finished his Greeley canvass in Maine, will begin another series of speeches in Ohio next Monday. The Eighth Congressional district of Ohio democratic liberal convention nominated Dr. J. J. Musson, liberal, lor Congress. The democrats and liberal republicans of the fourth district of Pennsylvania nominated Walter B. Mitchell for Congress. The Newark (N. J.) Journal has anthority for saying that United States Senator John P. Stockton does not favor the Duncan-Louisville straight-out side show. The republican Congressional convention at Camden, Arkansas, last week disagreed and finally split, one wing nominating Hon. O. P. Snvder, the present member, ana the other J. T. Elliott. Each has declared his intention to run. Senator Sawyer, who heads the bolt from the regular convention in South Carolina, writes that the movement Is wholly local; that both factions will vote for the same~slectors, and that both will earnestly support Grant and Wilson at the November election. One hundred and fifty delegates to the demo cratic convention are now in uonisville, part of the delegations from New York, Michigan, New Jersey, Arkansas, Indiana, and Pennsylvania having already arrived. The convention meets at 10 o'clock to-morrow morning. The talk is that Senator Bayard will be permanent chair - Jndge Richard B. Carmichael nominated by the democrats of the firat Maryland district for member of Congress in place of Samael Ham ble ton, was Imprisoned for disloyalty daring the war, and was subsequently speaker or the firat conservative boose of delegates. In the second district Stevenson Archer will probably be re> nominated without much opposition. A canvasscr Cor the "Life ot Horaoe Greeley" lmpcitm.ed a Su Louis man to purchase a cony, which he declined to do, when the following dia logue ensued: ??Are yon not a democrat?" "Yes. I am." "Will you not vote for Greeley?" "Yes, 1 think I will." "Then why not buy this book?" "Because if I should read his life I am afraid J would Change my mind and refuse to vote for the old ciue."
