W. o. Averv, Esq., chief of the appointment bureau, internal revenue office, has returned from his western trip. Here's the way Watterson, of the Louisville Courier Journal, discourses on the late election. We don't understand his iilostratious ourselves, but a friend of ours from out west who indulge.-* occasionally in a little game of poker laughed over them a good deal, aud so we print them for the benefit ot those of our readers who may be wiser than we : " Wf seem to have strnck one of those streaks of bad luck which sometimes oversha-ljw the Wttofce<bf the most skillfu. and deserving. No matter what we hold, the radicals have just enough to beat it. New Jersey 's two little nair torn out neither more nor less than Missouri's three little aces. We thought we had a full hand ii Tennessee and a ilush, at least, in Alabama ? and so we did huve?but the show-down proves them to be not worth a cent. The raise we made on Indiana cost us all we had won and a little more beside. We had slipped Virginia in our sl> eve and bid Arkansas under the table. But i it's no nse. They beat us holding, beat ns draw it g, and heat us plaving. It is evidently not our moon. We had a si- kly hoj.e that by hanging on I things might brighten. But the news this morn ing is no better in one sense and consideraldv worse in another. The best we can do is to j-imp the game and try our luck some other time. Partner, they've^ot us.'" A large relief meeting wai held in St. I/onis yesterday. KFKKCT OF TUB K1KBON BURINBSSfN BEW YORK. Wall street, New York, was more quiet yester dav, and the panicky feeling was dying out. There was but little business transacted in the wool, hardware, leather, or dry goods trade. Assistant Secretary Richardson, of the Treasury Department, was in consultation with leading bankets and merchants regarding the situation. It is saM that Secretary Boutwell has stopped the withdrawal trom the banks of the green backs deposited some time since to relieve the market. The following graphic story of the fire is told by a cortesj ondent of the New York Tints : ORIGIN OF THE F1KK. The flames which commenced the awful work of destroctioa won first discovered about 7X o'clock Saturday night in the engine-room ot the large four-story granite store, sitiiHted at the corner of Summer aud Kingstou streets, occupied by l'ebbets, Baldwin Jfc Davis, whole sale dry goo Is dealers. The tire must have been r-uioldering (or some time, as when it was first discovered the fiames had gained such volume as doomed the entire bunding. There was scarcely any wind stirring when the first alarm was given, and though the light of the fire was soon a bright one, nobody imagined that it would prove to be so appalling a disaster. When the firemen arrived on the ground they found that the flames had reached the fourth story of the building, and before they got to work with their engines every window vomited forth smoke and llame.the heat being so intense that, for the moment, they had to retreat. Still the fire men nersevered and get several large streams of water playing on the burning building before any of the adjoining stores caught fire. THK FlhK ui'KKimt ALONO MANSARD ROOFS The buildings in the vicinity were all of granite, four stories high, each surmounted with a Mansard r-?of. The detached splinters flew readily, as the air was heated by the terrible heat, Ind the flames began licking the Mausard roof on tbe opposite si le, far above the reach of the strean s directed toward it from all quar ters. The tire was constantly iu the air, and one building after another caught on the roof, and the flames skipped lightly along from one window sill to another, so thai in less than thirty minutes it became evident that the whole city in one direction was at the mercy of the flames'. A GlteSD BIT AfPALl.lNO 8CSNB. The scene at 10 o'clock was a grand one, de spite the destruction visible on ev~ry hand. TUe gutters were full of water that had been thrown u] < ii the burning houses only to fall impotent and di; appear in the culverts. The heat was so great that tlie blocks of granite composing the wail.- of the ptores already on tire actually began to explode, the fragments being scattered in eveiy direction, lloots fell in with a crash every moment, carrying with them the floors beiuath, heavily freighted as they were with 'arge stocks of valuable goods. As the interiors thus fell a prey to the element, walis began to bn'ge and ijalver, finally sinking to the pave ment in hu,.e m?.8?J*s of heated and blistered stone. The wind, hitherto a high one, having gradually grown iu strength as the fire pro gressed, became at length a gale, the flames seimiugiy having the effect to create currents of their own. Words tail me in describing the ap l allii'g fccne a? this stage of the Ore. Building after building fell passively before tlie flames, and it seemed au almost Impossible task to at tempt to check their progress. Whole blocks were on fire, and the very streets ^werc fall z' rtamcs. as immense stacks of go-Wla Lad been there piled tip in readiness for removal, only to fall into the grasp of the element that was surg ing forward toward the water Irout in reeistioe fury. SEW TKBKORS. The Babel of contusion assumed a new phase about II o'clock, lor the tenement houses at the upper end of Federal street began to catch fire, and the scenes were intensified by the affrighted actions and loud cries of the inmates of those crowded edifices. Flying hither aud thither in their frenzied terror, men, women aud children only added to the confusion without in the least helping themselves. Under ordinary circum stances, many of the Incidents witnessed at that point would have been deemed ludicrous, but the it tense excitement prevailing among all classes prevented any such Impression. Furni ture w as carried into the streets only to bo bro ken and abandoned. From every window were thrown perishable articles, causing sew dangers for tl ose on the pavements. Pale faces, ren dered more ghastly by the glare of blazing buildings, peeped from high wlndowi In abject terror at the pro. pect. Loud cries for help were frequently heard, and it la quite certain that manv of these piteous appeals were wholly tn vain, for many lives were undoubtedly lost, all traces of the missing persons having utterly dis appeared. BLOWING CF TBI COWTlGtTOrS STBBKTS. By this time it had become evident to all that in spite of the utmost exertions of the lire de partment the flames were gaining. There was then no alternative left save to blow np the streets closing to thoae already sheeted with llame. At two o'clock this was done. Chief Engineer Damrlll, who had heal fated at adopt ing so costly a remedy, hesitated no longer. He established a cordon ronnd the streets leading to Milk street, driving off the gazers with the jollee. Soon the measured tramp of tbe United States marines was heard as they marched np Washington street from their quarters in the navy yard, aud they reinJOrcod the overworked p 1 ce. The ladles, in many cases, were bewildered by the noise and bustle around them, rather than by cowardly fear, or even by natural timidity, and did some thing" that provoked laughter in spite of tbe awful character of the situation. One went about with a pnekage of hiee in one hand and a lisle thread stocking in the other, entreating the workers to help net save her property, which she powerless to designate. It exten led from Washington street on the west to the wharves on the east, and Milk street on the uorth to the Hartford and Erie bridge on the south. The beat of tin- drum is heard in 'he streets, and a soldier, with gun in hand, keeps guard by the ropes which surround the s^ene ot devastation. Women and children throng the streets. On the sidewalks, in yariis. in the cor ridors of the hotels, in the j?oiice stations, ami even in grave yards, are piles on piles of varia ble merchandise, snatched 1'runi the burning buildings.
