A Fr roved.?The President has approv ?d the bill which recently passed Congress pro viding lor the construction of eight Testis of war. Owing to the Senatorial caucus to-day, the sc-sions of the regular Senate committees, which usually meet on Monday, were inter mitted. Senator Wilson has written his letter ot" resignation, to take effect March 3d. It will he submitted to the Massachusetts legislature to day. The election of his successor takes place on the 18th. Naval Changes?J'ay Director .I. H. Wat mough ordered as general inspector of provisions and clothing on the 1st March next, vice Par IHrcetor J. H. .Bridges detached and placed on w aiting orders. Mr. Wilson's hfecial committee on the t'nion Pacific railroad and credit inobilicr will hold another meeting at 7 o'clock this evening, when dudge C. P. Sherman, of Ohio, will be examined. Mchasha,'Wiscon sin. Assistant surgeons in the navy?Edward G. W. Corson ami Ezra Z. Dcrr. At the White House? There was another crowd of visitors at the White House to-day. Among those who saw the President were Sen ator Corbett, and Representative* Parker, Bar dette, Wallace. Blaine, Wilson, and Hancock, and ex-Gov. Lyon, of Idaho. ?A i.r.EAT number of persons are at present in the city, awaiting action to bo taken by the Senate committee on military a Hairs upon the bill introduced in the Senate, recently, by Sen ator Hamilton, of Alarvland, in reference^ t<? headstones for our national cemeteries, and they feel it is but just that this matter sliouM be brought up at an early day. Tite Committee on Military Affairs of the Senate met this morning. There being no quorum the committee adjourned to meet again at seven o'clock to- morrow (Tuesday) evening. A great deal of business of an imiKirtant awl pressing nature is pending before this commit tee. and doubtless a lull quorum will be present at the meeting to-morrow evening to expedite business. The senatorial iirikerv committee at . letter son city. Mo., on Saturday, made a rejiort to the house, in which they exonerate Senator Bogy from attempting any bribery in the elec tion. They find, however, that Gen. I>orrU did try to bribe two iucml?crs, but that it had no bearing on the case. The report is signed by all the inemlMis of the committee, except Mr. Hcallce, (republican,) who will make a minor ity report next Wednesday. The Senate credit mobilier committee held a meeting this morning to consider the testimony before the House credit mobilier com mittee implicating United States Senators. All the members of the committee wero sent, pre but nothing was done for the reason that no complete cony of the testimony was furnished them. Copies will l>e plactd in the hands of every member of the eoruniitter to-day or to morrow, and it is probable that they will be engaged for several days in examining the evidence. The committee will to-day ask leave to sit during the session of the Senate. TheLastRailLaidonthe Metropolitan Road.?The public will be glad to learn that the last rail on the Metrot>olitan road, between Washington and the Point of Rocks, was laid at 1 o'cloek on Saturday. The ballasting on the road has l?een completed between Washington siid Koekville at this end of the road, and trom Point of Hocks to the Monocacv at the other etui; leaving only the distance between the latter joint and Itockville to be ballasted. The coin panv expect now to have the road in running condition, with it* Pittsburg connections, by the 4th of March. So mote it be ! Caucus of Republican Sen vtors.?The republican Senators this morning held a cau cus with the view of determining uj>on the order of business for the session. A committee was appointed to re|>ort at a future meeting as to what measures shall have precedence, the object being to act upon those of the greatest public necessity In order to avoid if ]>ossible an extra session ot Congress. ProminentSeuators generally arc against an extra session, and Some go so tar as to declare that the President should not call an extra lesion even it many bills are neglected, as the fault would then lay with Congress and they would be responsible before th>' country. There is no doubt that all import ant business will be transacted and an extra session avoided, the leading members iu each House lieing much opposed to convening the new Congress immediately upon the close of this one. There is leasonaible time yet to act u I on all bills of importance, and as night ses sions will soon be commenced, business will be dispeeed of more rapidly than heretofore. Conflicting Stories About the Situa tion in New Orleans?A telegram from New Orleans this morning says that information from some of the worst parishes in the stale is to the etlcot that officers commissioned by the Kellogg government have taken jsi.vjession of their of fices, and are discharging their duties without the least opposition, .judge Cullum, i'usionist, decided on Fridav that he wax bound, as were all the courts, to recognize the Kellogg govern ment as the only legal government in the state. This decision was rendered iu a test case brought up for the purpose. On the other hand, a private dispatch from New Orleans to a government official, received here on Saturday night, san the police rei>ortcd a contemplated at tark on Mechanics' institute, the armory and the |*olice stations by the fusion party. Immediately on the discovery of the plot a strong force ot' jiolice were placed inside the institute, and alI]'ro|>er measure* taken to defeat the scheme. Not much credit is given to the story. The latest advices from New Orleans rei?ort even thing quiet. Senator Pomerov re-appearcd in his seat in the Senate to-day, a few minutes after that hotly had been called to order. As he passed down the aisle, he extended his hand to General Logan, who was sitting by Senator Feutou at the time, and after shaking hands with both these gentlemen, took his old seat next to Sena tor Patterson. Subsequently he arose, and iu a brief speech relative to the late Senatorial elec tion in Kansas, denied "all and singular," the allegations made against him. He closed bv call* ing tor a special committee, to be composed of a majority of democratic Senators, to Investigate the charges made againstliim and report during the present session. The Senate voted the com mittee, and the Vice President announced that he would designate the me rubers during the dav. As the conclusion of his speech several Senators came forward and greeted hiw warmlv. It is learned, from official sources, that {here is no truXh la the published statement tfcat the War department contemplates ordering to some other point the greater portion of the United States military forces now stationed in the Ma tea of Kentuckv," North and South Carolina. Ala bama and Tennessee. OrdersariH be issued in a day or two removing the 7th cavalry to a point west of the Mississippi river, probably to the western frontiers of Texas, but chiir destination has not yet been determined on.
