Maine Politic*.
The state election In Maine take* place to
day. A governor, members of legislature, who
are to cfcODM a U. S. Senator, chanty officer*,
and five repre??entativee in the next Congress,
are to be chosen. The republican candidate*
for the moet Important poeitions are as rot
lows Governor, Nelson Dmgley, Jr.,ot Lewis
ton; representatives m Congrtw, John H. Bur
leigh of Sooth Berwick, William P. Frye of
I^wiston, James G. Blaine of Augusta, Samuel
F. HetDey or Bangor, and Kugene Hale of Ells
worth. The dsm icratic candidates are as fol
lows :?Governor, Joseph Titcomb of Kenne
bcuk; r e present at! ve* in Congress, Hion Bral
bary of Portland, Philo Ciark of Turner, E. K.
O'Brion or Thoniaston, Gorhara L. Boynton of
Bangor, ar d Cbas. A. Spofford of l>eer Isle.
Tbe democratic papers concede the election
or the republican canli late for governor by at
least T.onn or #,?00 m*j irity?the usual repib
lican majority when there Is no special excite
ment or canvass. La?t ye-.r tbe republican
majority * as ur.a-nally large tor such a yeai,
the vote being Dingley 45,73!*, Titcomb and
W Uiam-i "5/t."*, scattering 1.2. Kepublicau
majority The democratic vota will ome
oat more generally than last year, as democrats
arc eticouraged by temporary division? in the
republican ranks In some sections. The repub
licans, by coming out as generally as the dem
ocrat*. could run up their majority rrom last
year, but the general expectation seems to be
that it will rot vary much trorn 10,000. It seems
to be U.e impression that there will be more
democrats In the legislature than last year, in
couM'juence ot tbe divisions which are liable to
creep into the ranks of the majority pirty in
years of little excitement. These divisions are
serlons in some counties, in consequence of
sharp canvasses between the active friends of
tae roar prominent republicans mentioned as
candidates Tor United States Senator?Messrs.
Hamlin, Peiham, Washburne and Drummond.
The democrats concede the ret lection or Messrs.
Frye, Blaine, iiersey and Hale as representa
tives in Congress, but they will warmly contest
the first district. ?
Blaine :or years has not only been represented
ably in Congress, but her hom* government has
been characterized by so much capacity and
integrity as to give the republicans an assured
lease of (<qwer. Governor Diugley, though
comparatively a young man, has filled the office
with sigi.al dignity and ability, and he has evi
dently a large public future before him.
TheCh .cago Tn' ane pays a left-handed com
pliment to Mr. Alexander Campbell, the nom
inee tor < orgrtss on the "ehm-plaster ticket"
in the seventh Illinois Congressional district, by
sayirg ttat he "is ctieily notorious for being
the author of what is perhaps the m st *ensa
le*? argunieut against speaie-payments that has
ever been printed."

C-kbbbal Jackmhi a TaiaD-TBR*
Mi??-Senator Broan'.ow, who has been Inter
Tlewed upon the third-term question, thinks
the talk abont " the dangers of this proposed
elevation of President Grant In point or hoaor
above his predecessors in the high office he has
administered most wisely and well" is nonseti
dal. '-Andrew Jackson" he says "would have
held a third term if his health had not been
impaired by his residence in the White Hause
by the wound indicted in a duel and by his j
growing oid age. Hon. John Bell, of this state,
rsed to tell In conversation (and Mr. Bell was
. ipaLle of falsehood) long arter Jackson died, !
that such were the intentions and sach the
ambition of the hero of tha Hermitage, and ;
Jackson was not the less a patriot or hero or
statesman. His third term would have b^en
nothing more than aa extension of the first two, '
ar.d popu.ar liberty a.-* perfect after as balore
the event. Such would be the issue or Grant's
third term, and I can only say that if Grant
vetoes the civil rights bill hs ca*i carry each
southern state having a white majority."
- ? >
The republicans of the Eleventh Massachu
setts district have not yet succeeded in finding
the right kind of man to run against Mr. Geo.
W- Stearns, the democratic candidate, who is
cfcxicededly strong. There are plenty of man
willing to run. but no one of sufficient standing
to pit against Stearns has yet been found willing
to " stick." Mr. E. B. Gillette, of Westfield, is
tbe last of tbe long list named who declines.
The republican* had better return to their old
reprtsentative, Mr. Dawes, and induce him to
wlthJraw his refusal to stand again. Mr.
Dawes would get the intelligent vote of his dis
trict, without regard to party line*.
New E> gUnd is very much inclined as a mat- '
ter of personal pride to stand by Beecher and
the Beecher family, bat the Springfield K'pub
licita, which is rather outspoken on moet mat
ters, says, in summing up the pros and cons be
tween Moulton and Beecher
? From all this, escape is scarcely possible,
except in one direction. Those who rely on
what is called the psychological theory that is,
that ho great a preacher could not possibly com
mit so great a enme, in the words of Rev. Mr.
HaUitfav, even though an angel from heaven
should come down and make the charge,?are
impregnable to this evidence. They are sate,
because they reruse to admit the possibility of
guilt trom the first. Bat, to the vast majority
of men, Moutton e statement is more probable
on the rules of evidence, more consistent with
tbe dccumer tary testimony, more reconcilable
with the usaal operations of human nature and
tbe frailties of seaaal passion, than Beecher's.
We do cot say that Mr. Beecher is proven guil
ty, bcrause tiie opportunity tor cross examina
tion and for the production of witnesses has not
yet been ottered in its fullest extent, but we do
say that, with the candid observer, Moulton's
statement will outweigh Beecher's.
"Fnrther. there can be no escape for Mr.
Beecher, but to meet this charge In every place.
The country ami the (Congregational churches
cannot submit to fie return or this man to his
pulpit amid theacclaim ot his parish, after the ,
report or an ex-pai te committee. It is not to be
thought of."
The unfortunate people who, through do fault
of their own, are reduced to poverty and com
pelled to leave homes, more or lees comfortable,
tor the cheer lees confines of an almshouse, suitor
humiliation enough, God knows, without the
added degradation of being broaght into con
tact with the lowest and vileet of criminals
sentenced to imprisonment in the work-house.
The association Is all wrong, and a needless and
crue: aggravation of the sullering or poor but
sensitive people. The two classes should be
provided for in separate buildings. There is a
good chance now to carry oat such a reform in
this District, and we trust the Commissioner*
will take the subject under consideration. Let
tbe Washington almshouse be devoted exclusive
ly, instead ot partially, to the purposes of a
work-bouse, and devote tbe poor-house on the
salafcrious heights ef Georgetown to its legiti
mate use for which the property was given?an
almshouse; but let it be a home ror tbe destitute
of the whole District, where they can scj jy
pure air and water and some or the comforts o
a boaae, and be employed in some light work,
without the pain and morttdeation of being
associated with the criminal scum of the two
Dtotoict cities.
Our bright contributor, "Mlas Brown," has
(omechlBg to say In regard to the tribulations of
th? teachers in our public KhooLs. She says the
ti usteee are responsible, and not the teaohera,
for the larg* allotment of work for the pupils
m^s? home tasks requisite. We suspect
the responsibility to pretty equally divided be
tween the sub-boards of trustees aod the
teachers in their districts, both and all am
bitioas to make a good display on examination
day, and willing to crowd the children a little to
accomplish it. There to troth la the suggestion
that the teaehsw are heavily loaded down with
sixty or more pupils to the sehool; and the trus
tees are doing injustice both to teachers and
