But, ala*: when was human'tv beyon-i tempta

One da^ Sam was tempted and he,?. But Lot I
ice give the detail*.
Judge Humphrey. Colonel Swain, old An
drews (whose plantation wa* measure 1 by the
thou*ard acre*.) and S >1. I, >vett. from St.
Loui?, were Bitting in Ogiivie* front parlor
playing a *nug little game ot draw . AH were I
heavy better* when they held the car.l*. but I I
just then the caid* were running light, anl *o I
? ere the bets. Sam, who cared rerr little for
poker, had *at l>v watching the game ratter
than going In it. He held a hind, of course; but
hi* thought* were rather on the lay-out iu tae
text room than on the c*r<is in hi* hauls. Sev
eral tunes he had hinted at abandoning tUe |
game, but each time the others h*d ins'.oted jn
going on. so S%m livl politely stlrled hi* lm(<v
t.er.ce and bad kept hi.- *eat at tie table.
A* the clock wa* telling ten, Sam wa* called
from the table, and exen-ing himself tor the
moment, left the roan. Hi* way wa* through
the back parlor where lar the sleeping tiger.
The table, with iu layout, the case, pile* of
check*, deck* of card*, all were ready tor the
player*. A* be glan.-ed carele*dr over them, a '
sutfden thought *eemed to flash through Sam's
brain. A sardonic smile crept over hi* thin out
Up*, and hi* long finger* played with his m is
tacbe, as if to hiae the twitching lips from some
unseen observer. Advancing to the card-bo\,
where card* by the dozen pack*, iu unbroken
packages, lay piled up, he busied himseit for a
moment in owning pack*, breaking wrapper*,
ami assorting card*, tben, with an excretion of
guileless innocence upon his face, but wi'h a
"cold deck * up hi* sleeve, he returned to the
poker-table.
In a few minute* it wa* Sam'? turn to deal.
Hi* band faltered a- he lifted thecal, a de ice
*1 ot fluttered into his lap, and. in picking it up,
a iapid movement of t'ie long, lithe finger*, !
bad exchanged the table pack tor the "cold i
deck."
A grain of remorse seemed to touch hi* hevt
when he came to svrve the card*.
*? I can't take a hand this deal, gentleman. I
have got to step around to the hotel tor a mo
ment.
The others acquiesced, and the cards were
dealt. A good hand, one would say, by the ac
tions of the player*. There was a thousand in
the pot and a very obstinate expression on the
face* of the player* before the drawing began.
Then a singular circumstance was noticed.
The Judge only wanted one cant: one card
*ati*fled the Colonel, and one card each took
Lcvett and Anderson. Odd. thought each one,
and wondered whether they were trying to bite
a full or a tfneh, or were'hiding tours. But
each glanced at hi* own band, aud calmly
waited the issue, confident of his own and pity- I
ing the other's hand.
The cards served, Sam lit bis cigar and started
tor the hotel. If be had waited he would have
seen the tallest betting that was ever done
im-ide of that cottage. A thousand dollar* the
firft bet. fifteen hundred the second, two thou
said the third, and twenty-Are hundred from |
the "age" on the fir*t round. Everybody In and
willing to lap his pile. Out came check-book*
and pencils, and each one rapidly cast u>? in his
own mind how much his credit was good for
among the commission merchant* of New |
Orleans. Check after check was written, torn [
out and placed on the table, until there was
enough staked to cripple the richc*t mau there,
if be lest.
The judge stopped tt. Why. I don't know
unlet* it was that be bid reached the la-t check '
tn hi* book. As be filled that out he remarked, j
altb jud eial gravity:
"Hitre i* but ?i e hand at the table that can
win that pot. gentlemen; ain't it about big
erongh? I will see you, Colonel."
This checked the game. The pot wa? big
en< uj:h iu all ror.seience, and some of them
trembled a little k* they thought of the th j
S'tid* t iled there and how poor the call war to
ui> ke three ot tbeir comrades.
Two in re sights and a call brought the game
to a focus. Perspiration stood out ujk?u more
than one torebi-ad, and the fiiger* th*t griped
the cards tightened perceptibly as the crucial
moment approached. And head* bad to be |
turned to prevent the hungry eyes from teast.ng
too intensely uj*>n the pile on the table.
The venerable colonel hardly looked up a* he j
gently laid down hi* hand: "Fours. Ac&.gen- !
Uemtn!"
Tben Ardrews. with distended eyee and i
pursed-rp 1?|?: "Four aces for me!" and ths
car^s wad laid upon the table to verify the j
claim.
Keproachfully Lnvett glanced at his com- I
rades a* at inhospitable barbarians from wh>::i j
the title ot stranger wa< no protection, and
blandly remarked : "Excu-e me, but mine are
aces. Four*!" and again the card- proved the
claim.
Dashing his spectacles from bis Roman no=e
to )iis perspiring forehead, the judge sank ba.-k
in hie seat and gazed despairingly from face to i
face around the board. As hi* ere met Lor- I
ett's he partially straightened himself and sud:
"Sixteen aces, ns I am a sinner," and again
four aces lay upon the table.
They waited tor Sam that night, bat he did
not return to the cottage.

Battles came over to the bedroom, and when

For an instant he thought that something had i

ascertain what It was. He saw the brick lying i
there, but it never occurred to him that that !
wa* the cause of the trouble, so he picked it up i
for the purpose of throwing it out of the win

of pain, arid after an indignant denunciation of
Mrs. Battles he procured a piece of paper, and
in a fuiious rage burled the brick thrcagh the
