Thus far the Rf?vht r trial in Brooklyn ha*
l"fn mainly a war of wits tietwcen lawyers;
and an attempt to break down testimony on
the w side and to repel that attempt on the
other. Very little new testimony has been
ddel to the prftiiMin story of th<* CTi'at
<*CMkla!. and the Interest in the proceedings
ha* ?ri'x,n mainly from the sparring of coun
sel over this old-new evidence* on Its way to
il?e jury. The indications are that the pro
miiin^'i will continue to display about the
same dramatic feature* of interest from the
sharp en<*ount-Tt? of the great lawyers, and
through their fierce contests in the attempt
to crush or to protect important witnesses
11 i* ?iven out that if Til'.ou go^s upon the
stard a tremendous effort will be made to
hrrak him down in character. Should this |
? >e undertaken. his lawyer* will pro luce oa
his behalf eulogistic letter* from Hor.we
? ?rceley. i'harles Sumner. John <?. Wliit
lier. J. II. Lowell. Anna E. IHckinson, ;
Henry War I Beeeher, William T.loyd < iarri
son. and many other well-known person*. |
It i* also intimate! that tiie def-rise will
? all Mrs. Woodhull to the stand in order to
link Moulioii and Tilton di?cr?~litably with
lier r.aine: aud a!so to show that Tilton
secretly inspin I the WooJhulI publication
as part of a conspiracy to wring from Mr.
Bee< her support for his paper, the f/aM?*
Ate- But Mr<. Woodhull may prove an in
convenient witness f,>r both sides; and very
like]j Beecher's lawyers, as well a- Tilt >n's,
a ill conclude not to place her upon the stand.
1 j is hinted, further, tiiat <Jen. Butler may
take a hand In the case before it is through:
e-Mjperatlr.tr with Judge Kullerbhi and Mr.
Beach in bringing On. Tracy, (of Beec'ier's
comisel.) to account for unprofl'essional con
duct towanls Moulton in using information
gained from the latter when acting as his
counsel in anotlicr case, against him in the
present ca>e.
f Altogether, the animo-ities between the
lawyers ?i the two sides seems likely to get
even more bitter than tho~e between their
principals.
Tic* Xrw York /.'rTttny says of liari
t?aldi. who is i^w the recipient of so much
adulation at home, that the romantic vicis
situde* of life are strikingly illustrated in
the fact that little more than twenty years
ago he was eniraged with John Thompson,
now president of the First National Bank of
New York, in the manufacture of soap and
candles on Staten Island, and Just afterward
tailed a vessel engaged in the south Aineri
? au trade for a wealthy Boston merchant.
? * ???
Trie Washington correspondent of the
Cincinnati fnntmerci-U docs not probably
?>vets?tate the fact in saying that ??the
result of careful observation makes it
apparent that at least seven-eighths of the
pm|>erty-holders of the District are i>ppos?sl
to the parage of a law that will constitute
any Ihstrict offices to be tilled by |>opular
elections." It may a* well be underst<iod
that if Congress restores the suffrage feature
tothelMstriet.it will be. not in response to any
? ish i >f the property-holders here, but because
party policy dictates that the republicans
sliall not '? fro l?ack" upon popular suffrage.
< itr property-holders, with a wholesome
dread of miscellaneous suffrage acquired by
I ast experiences, would greatly prefer to be
?l*rnl a repetition of the d<?se. an I yet, in
view of the apparent fact that no District
legislation can l?e carried this session in
which the right of suffrage is not reci>gnizr\l,
tliey hesitate to press that opposition, and
only ask that Congress will guanl their rights
as far as may be from the raids of the n-'w
legislative Feather Dusters. If Congress will
restrict the rate of taxation to 130 cents per
hundred, guarantee a like tax on government
property for District expenses, and put it out
of the |?>wer of any elecu-d District officials
to increase the Idstrict indebtedness, the
property-holders will view the fresh suprem
acy of tiie Murder Bay politicians with less
alarm.
The trouble with Andy Johnson is that he
was Military liovernor of Tennessee under
the Vnion instead of the Confederate govern
ment during the war. Had he been on the
other side he could hanlly fail of an election
to the senate now. But he will proltably b?
?.eaten, and thus made to pay the penalty for
his mistake. And this leads us to mention a
curious and suggestive fact, viz: that tie* next
? o?igres> will contain on its roll a greater
immlier of Confederate than Union officers.
Tin attempt to establish a first-clas* mag
ax ir.e in Washington would seem to b? a
harantouH one. but the new monthly, the
yatiOHot. that made its appearance this
iw*ith. after many discouragements, lias
i-ertaiuly re?-eiv?-d an amount of commenda
r.on from the critics and press of the country
that may well encourarge the energetic pub
li.sliers to push on with their venture. Ttie
articles are nearly all of current interest. (
showing a capacity on the part of the .Yd- j
/kmuiT* Corp- of contributors to treat fresh
Ionics in a well-informed but not too pe
?i uiic way for popular reading. Certain
s|??eialties of the A'aluntnl in th ? way of criti
cism are also uultc ni>tieeable for the fresh
ness and vigor of handling. The one d *fect
in thi? first number, the typographical ap
pearance, is to be remedied, we learn, and
the next number will b ' presented in a dress

A judicial decision in a life insurance case
wa? made in New York yest -nlav in the case
ot one J??hn Sch!?-eht and Bosina Hchlecl who

claiming that there was an Improper joinder

The re-election of Pinch back by the Kellogg
l>-?tsiature a few weeks since does not seem
to have changcd the status of the case, since,
as was intimated in The Star of yester lay,
the committee will ignore his later creden
