Testcrday afternoon, nine small boys were in a noat on the river, and went to the marsh near the Long Bridge, where their boat ran aground. Seeing a storm brewing and finding they could not get their boat afloat, eight of the boys proposed to swim ashore and leave one of tnelr number (Ollie Cox, aged nine years,) in charge These reached the shore safely, and young Cox concluded to swim ashore too. In the channel his strength failed him, and he sank, but a lad named Joe Graves stripped off his clothing and swam out to the drowning boy, and reached him just as he was sinking for the third time and brought him ashore. A colored boy starred to carry him home, but Mrs. J. II. sessfora. No 1382 D street, took him into her house. David O. Humphreys, who since isto has been one of the judges of the Supreme court of the District of Columbia, died this morning at his residence, near Franconia, in Fairfax county, Va., about seven miles below Alexandria. Judge Humphreys has been in ill health for some months past, and It will be remembered tnat for some weeks last spring, while at tbe Dunbarton hotel, (Pennsylvania avenue, between 6th and 7th streets.) his life was supposed to be in danger. Subsequently he recovered sufficiently to be taken to his Virginia residence, and it was supposed that he was Improving there, for it was only about a week ago that he was able to walk out. Judge Humphreys was a native of Morgan county, Alabama. where he resided (at Huntsvine) up to the time of his appointment to the Supreme Court of the District, and he stood very high at the bar of his native state. He was tendered the nomination for the House of Representatives,- but declined. Singular Accident in Boston.?An old building In Boston, in process of demolition, tell yesteiday, entrapping a large number of children who were gathering scraps of firewood. They were speedily extricated from the ruins by a large crowd who gathered immediately at the scene. Peter Klley, aged 16, was taken out insensible, with his tnigh fractured; George McCafTerty, aged 11, had his head bruised and back injured, and several others were Injured, but not seriously. The children, in getting wood, had undermined the supporters of a floor above. The building was over loo years old, aiid was once occupied by the parents of Paul Revere. The Pittsburg Police Outrage.?a telegram to the N. Y. Herald, irom Pittsburg July lo, says:?"James Cummlngs, the man who was kidnapped by the police, was turned over to the Denver officer to-day, who left for home with his prisoner. It turns out that Detective Geary, wto brought Mrs. Love here from Maryland, decoyed her to Pittsburg by saying that Cummlngs was in trouble, and that she could get him out if she would come here. She says she fears that both she and Cummlngs will be murdered when they reach Leadvuie. Popular indignation still Mns high against the detectives, and proceedings will be taken against them." Mrs deb ur Virginia.?Mr. Cary Maupin, who lives about three miles from Liberty, Bedford county, Va., employs a colored man named Wilson, whom he furnishes with a team to do hauling, and with whom he divides the pro ceeds. The man failed to render a proper account of his work, and last Saturday Mr. Maupin, meeting him on the road, attempted to take the team away from him, but was knocked down by Wilson. Mr. Maupin's son. Robert, a young man, then' "fcerfered, when Wilson took a standard from 1 !:e wagon and struck young Maupin over the head, killing him instantly" He has been arrested and is now In Jail at Lynchburg, Va., for safe-keeping. The physicians have no hopes of Mrs. Ramday's recovery Killed by his Brother.?Hezeklah Dyer, a farm laborer In Leonardtown, Md., was found dead by the road side with his skull crushed in. The body was still warm. Dyer and his brother had Ibad a quarrel that afternoon at Abel's wharf, and it is supposed that It was rene wed, with fatal result, on their way home. The brother is not to be found. Lieut. Carey's Case.?a despatch to the London Daily Telegraph from Rork's Drift, under date of June 24th, says:?"The decision of the court martial In the case of Lieut. Carey, who commanded the expedition In which the Prince Imperial lost his life, has been seat to England for confirmation prior to its publlca tlon. Lieut. Carey will go home under arrest pending the Queen's decision upon the verdict of the court martial." Scenes in the Texas Legislature.?In the Texas house of delegates last Saturday an altercation and tight occurred between Representatives Ashbel Smith and Bob Taylor. Both are old gentlemen, Smith being nearly so, and a democrat, while Mr. Taylor is the republican leader In the house. Dr. Smith kicked Taylor. There was a great uproar when Smith hal lowed to Speaker Cochrane:?"I was only Illustrating the governor's position of pay as you go."
