They shouldconsidei that when i>r. Paxton came here he had found a heterogeneous congregation, but he hid united t ieia an.! Lud built them up numerically and spirii ually. Mr. Anderson, formerly of Kansas, remarked th?t he did n">t come to ihls church becau3e he w.isa Presbyterian. but because he heard the gospel preached here pure and polntel. He had sat under the preaching or Beecher and others, and he had never been affected by a mlnfstv as he had b-en by Dr. Pax ton. He thought something should be done to retain Dr. Pax ton here. Gen. Drum remarked that If they lo t the servl ts of Dr. Paxton, they might not be able tc hold the congregation together, ant the gallerhs they had just en > ted may he empty. He thought that Dr. Paxton should understand that the people here lore hlin, and he was satisfied that independent of this ocht they could increase his salary. Dr. Gallavh't paid a ldgh tribute to Dr. Paxton as a man and a minister. He would like an expression of the congregation as to Dr. Pax ton's continuance, and he suggested that the consideration of the debt 1k- postponed two weeks. senator Fi ve remarked that lie had l>een in the city for about eleven years, and for the first two or three lie attended church occasionally; then for sow time he attended no church, but for the pte t thre- yeai-s he had attended this church twice a day on Sunday.
