' George Levis, whose home is at Germantown,

a meeting of the joint committee to is afternoon
to consider tuk mat! bk.
The committee, consisting of members of the different
local boat clubs, known as the Joint regatta
committee, will meei this afternoon to consider the
advisability of ho.ding a fall local regatta on the
Potomac. The project Is one which meets with
I general favor among the members of the different
I clubs, and no doubt it will bo decided to adopt it.
; It lias become apparent, that, when the Potomac
river regatta is held early In the season, it is neces.
airy to have races later on. In order to maintain a
} live Interest In rowing. The oarsmen are liable to
go out of training, feelimr that they have done their
; snare, and ill se who did not take part in tlie regatta
have no incentive to practice. The proposl;
tlon to allow only the latter to lake part In the fall
I regatta meets with general approvaL By this
: mo. us the e.ubswillbe enabled to bring to the
! front a number of promising oarsmen. There
I seems to b. no obstacle tn the way oi a fall local
i regatta. and if : hose ?n position to manage the
; affair an* willing to eo ahead with it, there can b(?
j. n - doubt of its complete success. It Is generally
j acknowledged thai the greatest interest shown by
Wishingtouhms is In the races in which local crews
1 are rcptesen ed, so that contests between crews
, irom t ne different home ciubs will be fully as interesting
una there were crews from other cities.
The Oyster 1? Kin;.
some or the indications of thb opening of the
"k" season.
"Oysters in every style" is the legend which
shines in all the glory of new paint in front of most
of the restaurants and eatin,'houses In this city
to-day and was one of the Indications that the
; opening day of the oyster season bad arrived,
j There were, however, other indications. The long
i lunch counters looked spick and span, and even
the waiters *vore snowy white pprons, and their
glistening faces glowed aa If soap and water had
made an effective combination. Those anxious to
find out when the oyster season was going to begin
did not have to go tar to-day, and the noon lunchers
enjoyed the return of this very' welcome addition
to the bill of fare. The season, however, does not
besfin with any great rush, but with a certain
calmness and dellberatlveness which the oyster
men do not attribute to the oyster, but to the fact
that many people are out of town and the hot
. weather is still with us.
"Business Is a little slow yet for the flrst of the
season,'' remarked a dealer, "but It will soon pick
up. The oysters are prime. I Just received a lot
; this morning from New York and they are very
i nice. Prices are aoout the same as last year."
1 Oysters on the hall shell seem to be in greatest
demand Just at present and the dealers say that
the steamed oysters will come In when the
, weather grows cooler. Those little paper boxes
i which the married man takes home to his wife
> late at night containing half a dozen fried as a
peace offering are m-?de In the same style as last
, year, ailhougb a device has been Invented for rendering
them less s'.lppery In the grasp, a defect
. whlcn has frequently been complained oL
the effect of the new law.
; The Baltimore Sun to-day says: "The oyster sea:
son will open this morning, and oy3termen, packers
C i and dealers are preparing for business. There Is
i much uncertainty about the operation of the oys
; ter law passed by the last legislature. It is the
opinion of many oystermen that the act Is uncon;
stliutional, and some decllite to license their vessels
on this account. Many masters of sail vessels,
however, have procured license to run oysters to
market, and tongmen are generally understood to
be prepared to g > to work to-day. As the act peri
mits only touglng until the flrst ot next November,
at which time dr-dgers will go to work, It Is too
' early yet to foreshadow the action of the latter
[ class. The act revolutionizes the trade to some extent,
and much uncertainty will probably exist un
til all parties lnteiested in bivalves get used to the
1 f new order of things. Many are oi opinion that
i oysters will be high until November, by reason or
, the fact that the supply, having to be furnished
entirely by tongmen, will necessarily be limited,
i The season opened last year in September, with
Srices rudng trom forty-five to fifty-live cents per
ushel. This year. It Is thought, oysters will
start at from s?xty-flve to seventy-nve cents per
bushel."

Philip Armour's Pork Deal.
; two and a half million dollars earned on the
tcbn.
A Chicago dispatch states that the great pork
corner terminated Saturday, and that Mr. Philip
Armour's profits by the comer cannot be less than
i 2.500,000. The origin of the come# dates back to
! the failure of Grant <fc Ward. At that time New
; York speculators declared there was no limit to the
; decline In all sorts ot values Pork was at $16 per
| barrel. New York was particularly anxious to sell
!, pork, and It couldn't sell It fast enough. Armour
' had his cellar full of the property. He had hun?
dreds of thousand* of barrels, representing millions
of dollars, and to protect his own Interest he
\ began buying against Nr-w York's selling. In
1 one day he took in over 100,1)00 barrels. New York,
t lrui week or so, began to suspect that selling short
against Armour's buying might prove a disastrous
j business. Beiore the situation dawned fullv upon
r the minds of short sellers, however, the market
. had been sold short fully 300,000 barrels. In the
? meantime Armour had been compelled to take all
t the cash pork in the country, and a good deal of It
was scraped up here and there, but he got the
i major portion at irom $16 to $18 per barrel Sudi
denly the price began to advance. The shorts were
nervous, but they be d on. The figures rapidly
. ! climbed up to $20. then to 122, and, advanclnc fifty
. j cents a d iy. were not long in reaching $26, and
, finally $38. In the meantime a good many shorts
settled, but a large short Interest held out to the
last, and Friday a lot of 3,00u barrels were settled
I for. Saturday the last of them stepped up to Ar.
, rnour's office and settled their differences. Mr.
1 Armour claims that uo one was Injured by the
l corner except a few New YorK and New Orleans
gamblers, 'lhe public, he claims, was benefitted
by the prices being held up wlnse the impending
; demoralization to trade was averted.
