THE EVENING STAR WASHINGTON: MONDAY Jnly 6, 18*5. < ROSBY S. NOTES Editor. Tin* Kvraiiig Ntar has a rtgnlaft prrmarnt bona Mc MlreirrnlaiioB More than treble ?hm of ujr ether daily paper p?Wl*krd ia \V :?J)ingtM, aiMl eoaal to that of all the other daily paper* here added together. Save such notice as was taken of the day by Hie oldest inhabitants association, the Fourth of July passed by this year without formal observance, so far as the city of Washington was concerned. Tite celebration oI the event was practically turned over to the sinail boy and girl of the period, who made such demonstrations suitable to the occasion as fire crackers an.I minor pyrotechnic displays would aflord, ami there wm a notable absence ol the stars and stripes from the numerous flag staffs scattered throughout the city. Some of the .government buildings even failed to display their bunting. Whether these omissions were due to lack of patriotism or a superabundance of oversight, it is difficult to say; but they were anything but creditable to those in authority or otherwise responsible In the premises. If the nation's birthday is ignored at the national capital, and by the servants oi the people, what can be expected of the rest of the country? l'*>th the Woodblocks, one in Old and the other in New Englaud, are small, countrified piuces, but both of them have filled a large space in the newspai>era for a day or two. The English Woodstock has been the scene of the extraordinary success of a charming and keen-witted American lady, by whose efforts, mainly, her husband. Lord Randolph Churchill, has been triumphantly returned to parliament. The Connecticut Woodstock has Fess romantic claims on attention, but still deserves mention. It was a happy Idea of Mr. Bowen to invite to hi> country home year by year a group of distinguished Americans, to indulge in the traditional speech-making of the old-fashioned Fourth of July. It has advertised his periodical, to be sure, but It has done much more. It has benefited bis neighbors, and. In this age of the telegraph, his neighbors are the country at large. The leading speakers at the celebration this year were Senators Sherman and Logan. And It is not a small compliment to the manager of the Woodstock meeting that the very fact oi his picking upon them as the celebrities of the day is regarded as significant of their pn>mluence among the "coming men" of their party. It is certain that if the republican convention for 1HSS w ere to be held next week Senators Sherman and Logan would l>e very prominent if not the leading candidates. The two men are opposites, in almost every respect, but either would make a good run. Sherman might do better in New York than Logan, but we have seen Massachusetts, which hitherto has not been demonstrative over " Black Jack," exceed herself in warmth of welcome for him. Hut speculation at this distance is altogether "too previous." It is a long time yet to 1888, especially In this rapid age. President Cleveland's Fourth of July correspondence with Tammany Is not calculated to raise the drooping spirits of that organisation. The I*resldent was urged, tu a delicate way, to say something encouragiug to -the boys," bnt, in an equally delicate way, he distinctly al>st lined from doing so. He wrote the chiefs that the true democratic doctriue with regard to the offices was to fill them with men whose fitness would be acknowledged by the whole country. This sounds well; but we are told that the sentiment was received by "the boys" in a solemn silence. Of course, they would endorse any theories of this sort, for platform use only, but an awful suspicion is creeping over them that the President really means what he says. Fra Dlavolo is a rather charming jieraon on the stage, but in real life he is anything but agreeable. as the inhabitauts of Laurel, Md., have cause to know. Recently a handsome stranger moved into the town and speedily became very popular, winlling up by captivating the affection* of one of the belles of the place and marrying her. The popular young man was in the habit of disappearing occasionally, but his explanations were satisfactory, and nothing was thought of It, nor did it excite comment that these disappearances were coincident with a series of burglaries. But when the marriage was duly celebrated and the young people were enjoying the honeymoon the bridegroom excused himself again, and this time turned up in the K.-nds of the police, who had caught him In a burglary at the hou?e of bis new laiher-inlaw. And it now appears that be is quite a noted cracksman, who Is wanted for about a dozen robberies which he is known to have committed at one time aud another. No hope ts given by his physiclaus of any Improvement in the present condition of MeCullonyh. the tragedian. HN disease, progressive paralysis, Is Incurable. Utter imbecility will come shortly, the doctors say, aud then death w;ll follow, speedily and mercifully. Thus parses from the stage a brilliant and popular actor, and a void is made in dramatic circles "which cannot be t;isi!y filled. IIGORAYTT HoORAY" 4T11 JI LT' 4TTI JULY! ' The above are all fresh goods, practically untouched, snd were intended for strictly mid and late summet garments. But everything must be sold no matter what the co-t. Everything in the shape of Business Suits and Boys' Suits have been so largely reduced ihnt it were shocking credulity itself to mention; but I * ould gladly interest you in making a personal exainination, and ii you find anything in the stock to mpply a want, I feel confident of making an immediate sale, so seductive do I deem goods and prices. Yours truly, geo. henninq, 13 a rg a ins In Trousers. at this time of year there is always a demand for "odd" trousers, by which we mean trousers alone, without COATS OR VESTS. overproduction and general dullness in trade enabled us to obtain a large assortment of this line of goods lpon terms impossible early in the season. we open these goods to-day. rhey are all new goods, cut in the latest style, ok seasonable weight and fashionable patterns, and we offer them at prices that would not he named on goods bought early in 1he season. we bought them to sell; m1?ax ,ro sell them, and we realize flll\ that in order to do that promptly we must mark them low, diving you the benefit of our bargains. ^ they are not old stock, but entirely new and fresh goods, they are in men's, youth's and boy's sizes. we don't want you to forget the small boy's suits which we have been advertising for nearly a week. you'll miss a bargain if you fail to get one of those, for certainly they are better and cheaper than you can buy tuem elsewhere. E. B. BARNUM A (XX, 1 Jyl 931 PENNSYLVANIA AVENUE. Seasonable .A.nd Jproper Clothing. to get clothes to look well in win ter is not so difficult. thick woolens can be shaped and made to keep thj shape, but thin and cool fabrics re quire knowledge and experience tc fashion into comely garments. Ti meet all these requirements demands as you can readily judge, better skil! and care, and we claim that boti have been exercised in making upou1 present superb stock of seasonabl1 and proper clothing.
