The event was not unexpected. In truth It must be regarded as a merry that his hope lew lUIT.rlnt is over; and yet the nation's heart Is penetrated with sorrow ae It learn* that the end has come. This Is net the time to nicely w<|igh the merits of General Grant's character. His name will live as long as the republic, and will grow brighter with age. Time, which destroys common reputations, will simply remove from his the imperfections which marred It amdhg his contemporaries, and will give to posterity the portrait of an ideal and typical American. It is not basardous to predict that in the distant future. when greatness is seen in its true lines ot perspective, Lincoln and Grant will he the two great names In our epoc h of Amerioan history. and two of the greatest in the history of aay people or age. And It Is a source of peculiar gratification that in this general estimate the south of the fbture will Join the north. Even to-day, that section of the country, which felt OJe fyOti bgnd of war directed by Grant, not simply respects him a-? a great master but reveres his memory as a just and kind foe, who, when the issue was 1 decided, relaxed his stemrieee and treated his enemy as his fellow-citizen. , No man could enlny the high boaoK which followed Grant without exciting e?nvy and detraction. He was fiercely criticised from the beginning, yet there was a certain quality in his genius that seemed to lift him above all attack. In his early career as a soldier he was denounced as incompetent and unreliable; yet he advanced stop by step till be reetohed the highest round of glory. As a politician he was bitterly assailed; hut the people rallied to his lupport with a devotion that confounded the ablest critics of his administration. In busiaess aflhlrs he was sincnlarly unfortunate In the choice of friends, but the nation will not believe that he ever consented to dealings which would be inconsistent with on upright character. To sam up, briefly, It may be mM that to Grant more than auy man of the present age may be applied the trite, but expressive words of Shakespeare: "lie was s man. take him for all in all. We stall not look upon bin like again." A census that has just been taken of the Cheyenne* and Arapahoe tribes throws some light on tbe question of the disappearance of the Indian. In 1874, when the lest count was taken, the Cheyennes numbered 8,905, and the Arapahoss 2,346. They now number 3,169 and 1,300, respectively. If the connt embraces in each case the same elements, and in each case was accurate, the figures show that these two tribes. >4 latitat sr* rnniritv fnrlincr nwtv The treaty or peace announced between the Pennsylvania and the New York Central railroads Is one of the roost Important events of the year In the business world. For some time these two great corporations have been hostile. The Pennsylvania has been aiming to get control of the West Hhore railroad, and the Central has retaliated by Invading its enemy's natural j territory and petting hold of the Sonth Pennsylvania and Beech Creek roads. Thus both companies were doing their best to impair the other's business, although It might be at the expens* of their own. This la now to be stopped. Each railroad is to be let alone in Its own bailiwick, and the two rivals are to conduct their general business la an amicable spirit toward each other. If this agreement is ffcithfnlly carried out it should asiiist both railroads to get hack to a ound business basis, and thereby benefit the business community generally. As a rule, these great railroad combinations are not looked on with mueh flavor by outsiders, but In the present ease it was evident that the warfare between the roads was demoralizing to all securities, and a peace will be welcome as a promise of a more legitimate bwsine? and hence of better timet. There is one aspeot of the situation, however, that does not give entire satisfaction. The tendency ot the combination is to throw obetacles in the way of the Baltimore and Ohio railroad pushing Its lines to New York. 8uch a policy will not And much sympathy from the public, ae wholesome competition along the crowded Atlantic seaboard is in the highest degree desirable. It is gratifying to sec that the police are shutting down sharply on attempts to circulate nlgar and obscene publications founded on the Pall Mall Qaxette'i disclosures. Such attempts were to be expected as soon as it appeared that a burning Indignation for vice might be made very profitable to the selfappointed social censor, but it is the duty of the authorities and of good citizens to see to it that alleged reformers are not permitted to sake money by familiarising society with the most repulsive crimes and vices. The civil service reformers have preferred charges against Postmaster Jones, ol Indianapolis. who, it will be remembered, was appointed at the special recommendation of Vice President Hendricks. It the facts are as stated by the reformers. Mr. Jones has overstepped the boa ads. but In a special to the New York World, he denies that he has foiled to observe the law or has any intention to disregard It. Postmaster Jones might become a very interesting issue if matters were pushed to a square tight, hut It Is not likely that the case will be allowed to assume a controversial shape. Even a better advertisement for rhe new opera "the Mikado" than Mr. Sullivan coming over from Kugland In the steamer under an seamed name "In order to Insure <juiet and privacy," is the pr^nt legal wrangle in New York over who has the right to produce it there.
