Te* Gossip No. a,
Tin* N'"w York World has detailed a corps of
m>n to Inquire Into the adulteration of goods, 4c.
Three hundred rer ill stores have been visited, and
t lie packages got from them were analyzed by a
? ;?emist and mlcroscoplst of eminent repute. The
jvport states that while the public are not being
p :-*jned to an alarming extent, still the results
t-uow that the store teas may be found to contain
??He" tea, a product of Chinese Ingenuity, consist
ing of small bits of leaf, dirt, ic., made up into
pellets with rice water and colored to Imitate the
tea *hl> li it Is intended to adulterate. Purther

although to a less extent than formerly. "Facing"
coating the tea with a powder
t hat contains xim" blue pigment similar
to indlK" or Prussian blue, mixed with soapstone
cnalk ->r gypsum. "Tie- practice," says the re

the case of green teas." "Whether the facing of

All of thess facts we have repeatedly told the

OVER NIAGARA FALLS.
A Wuhlnfton ^lan'i Traffic Suicide
YMteii?r>
FRANK TRIGfl, or THIS CTTT, PLUNGES INTO TH? I
KIVKH ABOVE THE FALLS AND IS CARRIED OVKH^?
ArrtKKNTLY A WELL-PLANNED AND DEIJBERATE
SUICIDE.
A dispatch from Niagara Falls says that about
4:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon a party of vlsl
tors who were viewing the scenery from the Three
Sisters Islands observed a middle-aged man. apar
ently bent on sight-seeing like themselves, stand
ing on the third bridge that connects the Islands.
Looking back a few minutes later the man was
seen to have his coat and hat ofT, and was In the
act of leaping irom the bridge Into the water. The
party were at too great a distance to do aught but
stand and witness the fatal leap. The body sank
at once and passed over the Horseshoe Falls.
Hastening back to the bridge the party found the
coat and hat, and on the bridge railway was a
chalk mark, evidently placed there by the suicide
to mark the spot where he made the leap. From
papers lu the pocket of the coat It was learned
that the man was F. Trigg, of Washington, D. C.,
a guest at the International Hotel since Wednes
day nitfht. The hotel people knew nothing about
him, except that he had come there and registered
as stated. The body, it was thought, would prob
ably not be found before it readies Lewlston, 8
miles down the river.
ANOTHER ACCOUNT
of the tragedy says the act was most deliberate,
and the suicide was evidently carefully planned.
Trigg was observed standing on one of the bridges
that connect the Three Sisters Islands with the
mainland. He was seen to remove his hat and
place it to one side; he then took off his coat and
\rst and laid them carefully alongside the hat,
alter which he placed the hat on the clothing. He
moved slow ly to the railing and without any ap
parent wavering In his intention swung himself
over, hung on for an Instant and then dropped
Into the madly rushing Niagara River. His body
was not se> n until it was within about 100 feet of
the Horseshoe Fall, when It was visible for an in
stant and then the fearful plunge followed. There
were quite a number of witnesses to the fearful
exhibition of self-destruction, but all were too far
distant to interfere.
s>lnce his arrival at the International his actions
had not beeu extraordinary at any time, but sev
eral who saw him an hour or so previous to his
mad act thought he was under the inhuence of
intoxicants. A lady who saw him as he walked
toward the bridge said his face was pale and his
features fixed; he seemed to be very much ex
cited.
HIS CAREER IN THIS CITY.
Mr. Trigg was of English descent, born In 1840,
and was formerly a member of the bar of this
District. He graduated at the Columbian Unl
verslty Law school, and was admitted to the bar
October 31st, 1X08. He practiced here, however,
but a I?-w years, although he was remarknbly suc
cessful, especially in criminal cases. He married
here in the Young family, and about sixteen
years ago left for Richmond, Va., and was next
connect.*d with the passenger agent's department
of the Chesapeake and Ohio liailroad. He re
turned to tills city eight or ten years ago, and has
since managed the interests of the C. and O. Rail
road here. He leaves a wife and one child, a boy
twelve years of age. His family relations were
always of t he most pleasant character, and he
had the reputation of being a kind and sociable
man. He was traveling for his road when he com
mitted suicide.
.Major W. J. Walker, formerly general agent of
the Atlantic coast line railways, now a dark in
the interior Department, says he met Mr. Trigg
last Monday morning corner 13th and F streets.
He seemed to be In an unusual hurry. His dress
was somewhat disordered. Major Walker says:
"I was particular to notice this, as he always pre
sented a neat appearance. 1 greeted him with
?Hello, Frank: What are you doing up town at
this early hour?" This was about 7 o'clock. I
pleasantly added: 'You are a pretty good type of
the border ruffian or cowboy.' He replied; 'I am
one, or I wish I was one,' and hurriedly passed
down F street as If eager to catch a morning train.
He did not appear to me to be In his usual happy
spirits, and the impression wrought upon my
mind was that he was troubled about something."

A Plea for tbe Female Teachers.
To the Editor of The Evening Stab:
Is it not high time to speak a word In behalf of
the much-wronged and long-suffering female pub
lic school teachers of Washington? Two or more
yeara ago the trustees Increased the salaries of the
principals of the High and male grammar schools,
knowing that a deficit would thus be created, and,
In consequence, the female teachers lost three per
cent of their salaries for one year. Since, the sal
aries of supervising principals and superintendent
have been raised, and this year the ladles lose >,nhj
l?i per cent. We are Informed that a large
accession ot pupils Is expected In the High School
the ensuing year, and the trustees have decided to
reduce still further the pay of the ladles, "as the
only practical method of keeping within the ap
propriation," and as being "in accordance wltli
the opinion expressed In debate by several Sena
tors, members of the District committee." You
and I know that one prominent Senator disavowed
any such wish, expressly stating that he was
anxious that all necessary funds be provided for
the schools, and that salaries should not be re
duced.
The question arises: Is the aim of our school
system the High School or the education of the
ni;u?e?T ir the latter, let us sustain our tried,
faithful, and efficient female teachers, irlvlncr
them a living salary, dismissing the Incompetent;
if necessary to this end, abolish or limit the High
School; in any event, open its doors only to pupils
who have attained a very high degree of excel
lence In the grammar schools, and whose parents
are, at least during a portion of each year, actual
residents of our city or District.

Have you awakened from a disturbed sleep with all
the horrible sensations of an assassin clutching your
throat and pressing the life-breath from your tightened
cheat! Have you noticed the languor and debility that
succeed the effort to clear your throat and head of this
catarrhal matter* What a depressing influence it ex
erts upon the uiind, clouding1 the memory and filling'
the head with pains and strange noises! How difficult
it is to rid the nasal passages, throat and lungs of this
poisonous mucus all can testify who are afflicted with
catarrh. How difficult to protect the system against
its further progi-ess towards the lungs, liver and kid
neys. all physicians will admit. It is a terrible disease,
and cries out for relief and cure.
The remarkable curative powers, when all other re
medies utterly fail, of Sanford's Radical Ccbe, are
attested by thousands who gratefully recommend it to
fellow-sufferers. No statement is made regarding it
that cannot be substantiated by the most respectable
and reliable references.
Each packet contain* one bottle of the Radical
Cube, one box of C'atarkiial Solvent, and an Im
proved Inhaler, with treatise and directions, and is
sold by all druggists for $1.
