Just & o'clock, aDd were at once sent away. Gau

daur took water very quickly, and went a little to
the front. Teemer recognizing Gaudau's slight lead,
pulled up on him, and had uearly closed up the
lead ol a length at a quarter ot a mile pile. Uau
daur was pulling 34 strokes and Teemer 33. At tne
half-mile post Teemer was up on the ht. Louis
man, while Uaudaur seemed to be giving out. ills
left oar lolled to fully respond, and he was rowing
uneven. Here Teemer shot away from his rival,
and at three-quarters of a mile had a slight lead,
which he had increased at the mile.
Teemer did some fast work to the turn. He beat
Gaudaur out, and there was no race home. The
press boat went ahead oi Gaudaur, who said to
the reieree: "I am beaten, but don't give me the
wash." Teemer was rowing lazily, thirty-three to
the minute. Gaudaur was making no etlort to
show his speed. At the boat-house Gaudaur
rowed in, but finally pulled to the finishing line.
A man on the boat shouted to Teemer: "What Is
the matter with Gaudaur?"
Teemer replied: "Nothing, only he Is a little
slow." Teemer s time was 20m., 28.2-.i8. Gau
daur's friends were quite confident at the start,
but lost all their confidence eventually. The race
was a complete walk-over, and Teemer and his
friends at once took the train for Portland, and
will go on to New York. He sails for England the
middle of November to meet Bubear on the
Thames.

GKN. BUTUtK SPKAK8.
After speaking about forty minutes Mr. OnnneU
closed, and Gen. Butler rose and objected to the
latter part of Mr. Urtnnell's argument on the
ground that it went outside of the printed record.
General Butler arranged a law book on the desk
before him with great care and deliberation, then
placed his hand nrmly upon it before beginning
his argument. He wore a Utile bunch of
pinks in his button-hole, and was clothed as
usual In a full-dress sulu As he procoeded with
his argument he received much notice and careiul
attention by the audience outside the bar. He fie
quenUy struck the book beiorc him with his open
hand by way of emphasis, and occasionally wnVre
he had made a point he would put both hands in
his trousers pockets and throw himself back, look
ing as straight as he could at the CUlet Justice.
He asked ine court for an extension of time that
ne might reply to statements made by Mr. Grin
nell that were outside of the question at Issue and
calculated to prejudice the petitioners.
BIS SrATSMENT OF FACTS.
He then declared that he would state the facts
In the case, and asked if he was wrong in any of
his statements to be corrected by any gentleman
who was not an advocate of "stealing men and
men^ private papers." He referred frequently
with Irony to this *steailng of men.' and breaklnir
houses and 'stealing private property.' lie
said, that in May, ltwti, there was a meeting of
some laboring men, and ?oine policemen were pre
sent. The police were armed and so were some of
the working men. a bomb was thrown by
some one for some purpose and some
onewasklUed. There was no evidence that any
one of the petitioners threw the bomb, or knew
anjrthlng of It. Two only of them were In sev
eral miles of the place, and the wife and children
of one ol them had been Just where the bomb fell
but a few moments before.
He said further that the men had been Indicted
for murder, and lor being accessory to murder by
giving advice, but that they had been convicted
of conspiracy, a thing the indictment did not
charge them with.
TBI AIGUMTOTB m?HXD.
Gen. Butler completed his argument at fifteen
minutes to 3 o'clock. That closed the case, and
the court proceeded with the docket.

THE STCKTUCBASa ACCIDENT YESTERDAY.
The races yesterday closed with a steeplechase,
which was won by John Henry, Jim McGowan
second, Wellington third. Wheatly, Justin, Mack,
Lost Cause, Killarney, Beverly, and Will Davis
also ran. Mutuels paid $25.90. Wheatly, ridden
by his owner, Mr. 11 urwood, ot Baltimore, wus a
decided favorite, becau eof the ease with which
he won the steeplechase on the nret day. The
I start was made without much delay, and Wheatly,
to tbe gratification of his many backers got a
good position. The horse ran ail right past \\ oods,
I but be bolted the Jump at the summit ot tbe hlil.
Mr. Harwood quickly turned the horse, forced him
to take tbe Jump, and followed, though no longer
1 with any hope of winning the race. At the next
jump Wheatly's fore feet struck the hurdle, and
the horse went down, the rkler beneath him. The
horse was up In an Instant, but the rider remained
motionless. At once there was i rush for the spot,
and In a few moments the uuconsclous rider was
borne, upon a litter improvised of overcoats, to the
club house. Meantime a surgeon had been found,
and he made a hasty examination of the injured
man. At first It was thought that the Injuries
were serious, but when Mr. Harwood had been
made comfortable at his hotel a more careful ex
amination disclosed the fact that no bones were
(broken. He was bruised and badly shaken up,
but will probably be out in a day or two.
Dr. t'bas. Filler, of Baltimore, who has charge of
Mr. Harwood's case, reports his pat ent as doing
very well to-day, under the circumstances.
Ha Keaioa for a Cholera Scare.
| TUB INDIPRNDE NTE NOT AN INJECTED SHir.
A sensation was caused by the announcement,
printed in yesterday'a Star, that tbe ateamsnip
In lependente bad been allowed to land paasen
gers In New York from the cholera-infected port of
Palermo, and that the immigrants had been per
mitted to go to Chicago, Washington, and other
parts ot the country. A dispatch was sent to the
health commissioner ot Chicago by surgeon-Gen
eral Hamilton warning him to look out for the ar
rival ot the immigrant* In that city. Commit*.
HonerDe Wolf, in reply, asked: "Will not the
l ulled States authorities take notice of the mon
strous wrong of quarantine officers In forwarding
immigrants from infected ports directly Into the
interior without notice?"
A special meeting ot the quarantine commission
ers was held in New York yesterday, and it was
decided to ask the Secretary ot the Treasury it
?hips coming from ports where cholera prevails
cannot be sent back. It being the opinion that it
that power exists it Is now the tlmo to euforce It.
The policy ot Health Officer Smith In the treat
ment of the Immigrants and vessels that havo
brought the disease to the |>ort was approved, and
he was Instructed to continue theatric-test treat
ment of the passengers who have already arrived
on such vessels or who may arrive. One of the com
missioners said that the ship Independent# was In
a perfectly healthy condition w hen she arrived at
the port of New York, and it had been twenty-one
Cn'ys ,-dnce she touched at Palermo.
Surgeon-cicncral Hamilton says that the
first latormallon received by him was
through the aewspapapers. He telegraphed
to various cities where the passen
gers of the Independents were said to have gone.
Responses nave Uvn received, he says, from Chi
cago and Baltimore that the Immigrant* are being
looked up, aud all necessary measures will doubt
less be taken In regard to their baggage. I have
similar information from the health officer of this
cltv, who was advised by me that two ot the 1ml
pendenie's Immigrants had lea New York for
Washington. Aa to the power ot the Government
to restrain vessels from Infected ports from enter
ing, I have to say that there is undoubtedly such
authority found in the act of April 'Mi, Iktk, ? hlch
requires that regulations shall be issued by the
Surgeon-General of the Marine Hospital service,
and approved by the President.
