SHARP DISCISSION LAST SIGHT. In the bouee of commons yesterday afternoon, Hir O. O. Treveiyan resumed the debate on the ad dress. lie said thai the conviction of twelve mem b?'isof the bouse of commons would happily do more than anything else 10 bring about a settle ment of the Irish question. They had seen n iw Irishmen could bearresied on F.hgll.sn soil for a crime created under the coercion act?a crime which did not exist In tue Kngdsb law, an . for which Sngllsbmen cuuid not be arrested nor a foreigner surrendered. It was obvtou- that the government meant to pursue their policy of op pression in Ireland. refusing even to concele a modicum ot local self-government. Sir Geor.;e re minded the leaders of the liberal unionists that afitr six months of the Kan of Carnarvon's regime tney bad advocated tbd extension of local govern ment In Ireland. Why were thev now silent when the tory government bad decided to try to rule Ireland by coercion alone. Ignoring a policy of con cession. wimout whlcb it was impossible lor the country to be peaceiul and prosperous? a cat and rat fioht. Major Saunderson taunted Kir i.eortre with shirking an explanation of his change of opinion. He quoted extracts from sir George 3 speech de nouncing the league und Gladstone's policy. Mr. Piruell, ue said, had compared Mr. Kalfour to a vudoio cat, and Mr. Healy, but two snort years ajfu, had likened Sir George to a rat. Ihe Par n. and the "rat" were close mends now In lighting with the "cat." Well, when rats fought w ith a cat, the rats got the worst of it. The par nellites were incn who were never law-abiding, and who never would be, let the law be what 11 might. An Irishman was not a man who natur al sympathy- d with law of any'Kind. Ilslimen had virtues, but that wan one ol the defects of the race to which he h.msett belonged. ? ?#?- ? - To Bring Keadinic to Ho Knees. THE LkAbkRS 01' TUK HTKIkR RESOLVE TO ADOPT ?XTREME MEASCKES. The leaders of the strike lu the Schuylkill region are said to have resolved on a desperate measure to bring the Heading Kallroad to terms, and force It to abandon its arrogant position toward the labor organizations. The proposed measure 13 a general strike on or before Saturday ot all eccen tric engineers, Bremen, putnp-tneu and other min ing mechanics. It la under* cx)d that an alliance was formed yes terday, through tne medium ot the general execu tive board of the Kulguts of Labor, between Miners' I>Lstrlct 135 and District 215, whereby two dlstr els were to act In harmon} lu the contem plated move. Subdivision 12 Is composed largely of englU'-ers and other skilled labor about the mines, an l they are attached to District 35, be cause they are noi numerically stroug enough to form a division of their own within District 218. Ail of the Interests have been harmonized, how ever, and should the proposed strike take place It would resuil lu flooding all of the idle mines and cause damage which months of time couid hardiy undo. The leaders suy Uiat while they realize the hurtful effects of such a step, they leel that It Is forced Upon them by tne stubborn refusal of the heading officials to cohfer with them in reference to tneir grievances. TH* IXVKSTIOATINO COMMITTEE. The only member of the Congressional commit tee appointed to investigate the strike on the Heading Kallrotd sysiem. and in the coal region, who has arrived in Philadelphia yet, is congress man Anderson, ot Kansas. The committee will not begin lis examination until to-day, when Presilient Corbin will probably be tue principal witness. Attorney-General Klrkpatrick reached Harris bu g Tuesday morning iromhls home at Kaston. 1 p<>ii being asked wnelher he had decided to act In the matter of tne quo warrauio against the Heading Kallroad, recently applied for, said that be nad taken no action, but was holding the mat ter under consideration. A RETORT FAVORABLE TO PENNSYLVANIA EMPLOYER. The executive committee of the Pennsylvania company has concluded its work on the wage question, and has referred the matter to the higher officials of the corporation for tiual dis position. It (^understood that the report of the executive committee is in the main favorable to the employes, jt recoiuineuds the equalization of wages of all worke s on tne various branches of the line, but does not authorize an advance where wages are at present up to the standard of other roads. . hi . The tragedy is the result of a love af fnlr Young Hacker and Miss Stelke met some time ago, and fell In love with one another. The marriage was opposed by ihe girls arents, and to separate the young people she was sent to Ber lin to visit at ihe home of her grandfather. In some manner Hacker learned of the iflrls where abouts and appeared In Berlin on the 31st ult. He took rooms at a hotel, but was taken down wit b tne measles, when Miss Stelke prevailed on htr ifrandDareni to take the young man undej" his nx>f. \bout 9:30 Monday night Hacker c lied the girl from the fireside to the door of hi* r?m when tue tragedy occurred. Sunday night at Silver Brook, eight miles south of Hazleton, Pennsylvania, a party of Hungarian miners got on a spree in the house of a man named Maullck, and became involved In a fierce light, when a lighted lamp was overturned and exploded, setting the house on Are. Five of the men and one girl were roasted alive. Maullck and his wife were badly burned and will die. Half a dozen others were badly burned or Injured by Jumping out of the windows. Ills the opinion of many that there was a murder com mitted In the house and It was fired to bide the crime. Jusilce of the Peace O'Donnell, acting cor oner, has impaneled a Jury, and the past two days has been spent in hearing testimony from the survivors of the holocaust. A number of very important facts have been obtained, and there is a great deal of evidence tnat goes to show that lite firing of the house was not an accident, but that It was deliberately done tor tne purpose of hUlng a terrible crime, supposed to be that of murder. A man named Jo tin sedilo, who, as yet, Is not to be found, waswen ahortiy-after the ilro wiui nis hands burned, his shirt lorn and bloody, and ne w ,s at the time without a hat or coat. Owing to the absent" of important, witnesses the Investigation was continued until Thursday. ??* ( ungrckkioual Trifling* From Ae Alexandria Oazette. Slipshod EaigluU. From the Xat oual Review. Downright earnestness 19 often the root of the evil. Some time ago a story was current of an editor writing, "We remember seeing Canning when we were a boy." More recent instances of similar awkwardness are easily found, even where they would be least expected. "The boys were served out with long canes'' (to beat the bounds), instead of "longcanes were served out tothe boys," "He was given a statue" ior"a statue was given lo him." "They were shown the way" for "the way was shown to them." "He sustained" for "he met with" an accident. "The dinner was partook of." All these questionable phrases appear In the col umns of our leading Journals. Even works iess ephemeral are not without fault; one of our phi losophers writes, "Tuere requires a multiplicity of illustration:" one of our recent diocesan histories sueaks of "differing with him." An advertisement of wine says, "We guarantee lndentltv to Sample." A tew years ago the circular summoning members oi parliament ran ihus: "Business of importance will be proceeded with." "L'nder the circum stances" is common for "in tbe circumstance." ?t? ? Isabella's Plot Against the BtoiNcr.?The London *'hrrmitlt'?
