CONORKSd TO BB ASBBO TO REMOTI RKTmlCTIOMS? the MEETIN-. or TUB TRUSTERS LAST SIGHT?A!? OFFICIAL C0UJS10* WITH TBI BCILDI.NQ I* SPBCTOR. The school board when it met last night found lt9elf in as much a quandary as ever regarding the appointment of teachers for the ensuing year. Several hundred "school marrns" and school masters, some of whom are now abroad, have been w.?itln< anxiously for the action of the board. When the board met last night, Mr. Darlington, from the IJigh school committee, submitted the ; list of nominations for the teacher*hips In the Hlprh SchooL He said the nomination* embraced all the old Cortisol teachers, who had not resigned, and two additdonal ones. Mis* Breckinridge and Mr. Daish. I>r. Lane Is nominated as principal. The re are four vacancies jet to be tilled. Mr. Fish said he whs ready to make the nomina tion.') of teach-rs for his division. After some dls cu^-lou, as Mr. Kosa stated that they would be un able to adjust salaries then so as to comply with t:ie requirements of the law, It was decided not to submit nominations at that meeting. Mr. Darlington ther> uixm withdrew the High School nominations. Trustees made statements, how ever, showing that all the old teachers would be renominated. There Is some question yet as to the appointment of new teacher-, and the assign ment of Normal School graduates. THB CONTROLLERS DECISION. Mr. Wbelpley had tha secretary read the letter of the First Controller, made in response to a let ter from him, and which was published In yester day's STAR. Mr. Fish said that that meant that they had JS..V1O tliat they could not use, and that they wouid have to equalize the pay of teachers of tne gr.uuniar schools by reducing the pay of the male U-UCUtTs, TO APPEAL TO CONGRESS. Mr. Darlington said they had the alternative of removing all the female teachers from those grades. He offered a resolution, which was adopted, "that the opinion ot the First Controller be referred to the i ominlsslouers, w.lh tue urgent request or the hoard th.it it be lor warded to the senate and House appropriations committees, nnd earnest efforts I...nit io secure such action by Congress, bee-re it, adjournm lit, a* will obviate the serious embarras-tntni and probable disorganization of the schools, which otherwise must result from the restrictions in question." SCHOOL-HOUSE \EKSfS EMilNfc-UOl'SK. Sir. Whelpley called attention to the proposal to locate an engine-house on tub street, on the Wal lach school square, between the Wallach and Towers buildings. He felt obliged toobjet to it is he deemed It an Improper plac>. 'i liese mo build ings contained twenty schools, and a thousand children wli se lives and limbs would be Jeopard ized. lie spoke aiso of the objection of curtailing , the play-grounds of the schools. He otiered a j resolution protesting against the location of the | engine-house on that square. Mr. Whelp.ey remarked that there was other i proper!} In that part of the clly Just as available ! for the purposes of an engine hou-e. He called at- i tention also to the ordinance of the clly council of 1 August 'Jo, i.sox.\ imposing a tax of j cents on every I jlot) ol real estate to be set apart and applied ex c.-uslvely to builumj; public school houses, seveu I thousand dollars oi the sum thus realized, he suld, was us- d to purchase the Wallach school house site. He thought If the commissioners' attention was calleu to luat iaw providing lor tne applica tion ol this money exclusively to school purposes they would reconsider ihelr action. Air. ltoss said he heartlij seconded the re>olui Ion and said the noise t hat would necessarily accompany the opera tion of .i fire engine com ( any renin n-d the erection j of an engine house In such a place extremely un desirable. Sir. Darlington offered an amendment to Mr. Whelplt?y' resolution setting forth the provisions of tne ore.name of ISO-', and declaring "that tne ground In question, purchased, is neither le- - gaily nor morally auoject to di .erslon to any other than public schod purp >scs." Tul >. nieiidment wa.-. acts k,ie l by >!r. Whelpley, , and the resolution was then a :opted. A COLLISION WITH THK BUILDING INSPECTOR. I find it entirely free frora alum, terra alba, or any other injurious sub stance. Henry Morton, Ph.D., President of Stevens Institute of Technology.'' " I have analyzed a package of Royal Baking Powder. The materials of which it is composed arc pure and wholesome. S. Dana Haves, State Assayer, Mass." The Roval Baking Powder received the highest award over all competitors at the Vienna World's Exposition, 1873 ; at the Centennial, Philadelphia, 1876 ; at tho American Institute, New York, and at State Fairs throughout the country. No other article of human food has ever received such high, emphatic, and uni versal endorsement from eminent chemists, physicians, scientists, end Boards of Health all over the world. Note? The above Diagram illustrates the comparative worth of various Baking Powders, as shown by Chemical Analysis and experiments made bj? Prof. Schedler. A pound can of each powder was taken, the total leavening power or volume in each can calculatcd, the result being as indicated. This practical test for worth by Prof. Scliculer only proves what every observant-consumer of the Royal Baking Powder knows by practical experience, that, while it co^ts a few cents per pound more than ordinary kinds, it is far more economical, and, besides, affords the advant age of better work. A single t ial of the Royal Baking Powder will convince any fair minded person of these facts. * While the diagram slwws some of the alum powders to be of a higher degree of strength than other powders ranked below them, it is not to be taken as indicat ing that thev have any value. Ail alum powders, no matter how high their strength, Te to be avoided as dangerous. CITY ITEMS. OcI?Im and Cnd? Sale At The Fair, 812 7lh street northwest.
