' It is n :nlstake to suppose that public spirit and
progress :venem are mown by a defense ot the
attempt to fasten upon the attractive streets of a
populous capital tnnt system of electric railway
whicn is pronounced by the authorities and by
cooimur.itlea which hare tested It, unlit for use in
liirjre cl'lea, and satisfactory only In suburban
Vxalltles. To recommend Its general use in
Washington is to treat the capital not as
a modern, well-peopled city with an acquired
security, comfort, and attractiveness to be pre
served at all haxarda, but as s sparsely settled and
aspiring village, which should welcome any novel
ty, however ugly and dangerous, provided it will
attract public attention and boom the sale of lota.
Washington Is a city, sot a mere suburb. Its
streets should not be obstructed by overhead elec
tric wlrts. The Eckington and other roads, large
ly suboroan, which have bren authorized to use
electricity, will be the forerunner-) of urban roads
with thj cheap overhead wires, If they are per
mitted without protest to occupy with such wires
the traction of their routes which lies within
the city limits. / It is conceded that It Is
practicable to so construct such railways that In
streets t be wires shall be underground and In
suburban roads strung overhead. To bury the
wires of the Kcklngton or the Teuieytown road for
the small portion of the route within the city
limits would not surely, as Major Raymond fears,
coat to much as to prevent the construction of the
railway. The Eckington officials state that their
road will cost |^0,ouo per mile. A company which
Is public-spirited enough to pay that amount in
equipping a road of which the cars are to be
cheaply propelled by overhead electric wires can
not consistently begrudg*>the trifling additional
expense for the public benefit of running thrcugh
n conduit a few hundred feet of Its wire at the city
end ot its line. If in any way these roads can be
induced or compelled to pursue the course indi
cated no precedent for obstructing and endanger
ing the c Ity streets will be established, and Wash
ington will not be deprived of its hope of burying
at some time the existing overhead electric wires
within the city limits.
It tarns <>ut that the case of cholera reported In
Philadelphia yesterday was not Asiatic cholera, as
at Bret supposed, but acute cholera morbus, re
sulting from indiscreet eating. The news from
Florida, however, grows more discouraging. This
is lamentable, but not surprising. That yellow
fever existed in that state all last winter was an
open secret; but instead of stamping It out then,
as could haTe been done, tne authorities seemed
Intent upon concealing the fact, lest a general
knowledge of it should turn away the tide ot win
ter travel and visitors, from which such a rich
harvest is now reaped by the people of that state
every year. The inevitable result has followed.
For the sake ot temporary gain, sickness, death,
and endlatm sorrow have been entailed upon hun
dreds ot people in no wise interested in land or
other speculation, and the business Interests ot
the slate have suffered a blow from which they
will not recover for many years. The currents of
winter travel will now How in other directions tor
a long tune to come, and outside capital will seek
investments in quarters less liable to fatal epi
demics, and where vigorous and effective measures
are adopted to diminish their dangers and drive
them out if they appear. The old lesson that "an
ouacj ot prevention Is belter than a pound of
rure" has been a costly one to Florida; but she
wui probably remember it in future. And other
communities will do well to profit by her experi
ence.
The letter ot Secretary Utchman of the Knights
of Labor, announcing his determination to vote
the republican ticket this year and explaining his
reasons lor so doing, is carefully worded, so as not
to express an Intention of appearing In the matter
in his official capacity. At the same time. It will
be accepted by politicians and the public gener
ally, as a notice served upon the democrats that
they may count the Knights out of their calcula
tion* for in* The opinlonsof Mr. Utchman as a
man would not be of sulllclent consequence to cause
the publication of one ot his letters as a campaign
document by either side; but t he views of Mr. Utch
man as the secretary ot a great labor organization
are quite another thing. The letter will probably
cause another rupture In the ranks of the KalgUts
ot Labor. There are among them, doubtless, a
good many who are staunch democrats, and who
will not fancy the idea of their secretary, or any
othe* officer, getting up such a demonstration in
which tney are Involved, even by implication. Be
sides these there are others who, while perhaps
agreeing in the main with Mr. Utchman's conclu
sions, nevertheless disapprove of the introduction
of politics Into the order or of the order Into poli
tics. Kr jm their point of view Mr. Powderly has
shown greater wisdom in refusing to make a prac
tical application as between the two parties of his
frankly-expressed opinions upon economic ques
tions in any manner that ouid be interpreted as a
yromlse to carry a following with him.
in England this time, not in America, the con
troversy over the birthplace of our late General of
tne Army has sprung up again. The new testi
mony adduced is to the effect that General Sheri
dan was born in the barony ot corkagulny while
his father was steward to Captain Ulckson, of
Kedcdff. The father Is described by local tradi
tion as a man of exceptional ability and upright
character, who, after leaving toe employ ot Cap
tain Ulckson, set up a public bouse at Dlngie and
soon died, ills widow Is said to have been mar.
rted a second time, but her sons by her flrst
husband got along so ill with their stepfather
that they migrated to America. This Is an Inter
esting story; but, in view of the fact that the |
general's father, in the family's western home,
picked h.m out for a course of study at West Point,
and that ail the evidence brought forward by thune
who were interested, a few montns ago, in proving
Sheridan to have been ot alien birth, went to prove
that he must have come to this country while a
babe, several serious Haws appear in the texture
o< the narrative. .
The completion of the bridge over the Hudson
Jilver at Poughkeepele is the culmination ot sow
twelve yean of agitation and work. It will mark
the beginning of a new era in railroading iroiu
Northern Pennsylvania and the West to the At
lantic seacoast. Trains which have hitherto been
deflected from flrty to seventy-five miles to the
north or south will be able, when tne whole plai,
has been earned out, to puan right through to
boston, and thence make advantageous ootinrt
uons with the rest of New Kngiaiut and Canada.
Two more deaths have occurred through tne
error ot a drug clerk. Tincture of aconite v. a
mixed by accident with a harmless soda water
syrup, with fatal effect The clerk mho made the
blunder has been arrested; but no punishment
that can be inflicted on him will bring back th>
live* lost by his carelessness. No druggist should
be permitted 10 do business whose wares are so
arranged that potaooa*nd harmless drugs or sod.i
water syrups are in such close proximity unit a
blundering clerk can confuse Uiem.
The objections of the commissioners to the board
ot audit bill are sound. The proper tribunals to
exauune into these claims for damages by city lni
provements are the established courts.
