The autumal festival of tiie Washington schuet
zen-Veretn begins to-day at the park on the 7th
street road It will continue two days. A proces
sion ibis morning escorted Mr. J. J. Appich, the
present king, to the park, and this compliment
I was attended with considerable ceremony and a
i One street display. Tne members of the Toreln

ou K street, 'lhey were In holiday attire, and
j wore the wide-brim bats of the Schuetzen, with
I gold tassels and plumes. A broad (badge of red
silk fastened to each coat beside a button-hole
bouquet added to the festive appearance of the
costumes. Long lines of carriages adorned with
American flags and bunting were soou formed In
the street, aud gaily decked marshals dawned up
and down with all the earnestnes? of such officials
on occasions of this character. There was a stir
and bustle among the groups ot Hermans that de
noted great interest In the festival.
Shortly Mr. cuarles Ktx-l, the shooting-master,
and the chiel marshal, J. Henry Busher, and mem
bers of the executive committee started lor the
residence of King Appich. They nad the band of
music with iliein, am the king was brought to tue
rendezvous in a ?ty*e t*-iltiln? the rank which ne
had won by his prowess in the shooting matches
of last year. As soon as tlie king arrived at Eld's
the procession lormed. The lour-lior** barouches,
1 containing Mr. Simon Wolf, the president of the
Schueizen-Vereln. and other officers, and thosf of
the king and the shooting-master were gaily deco
rated with flags. Utile flag, fluttered from the
heads ot the norses, and, altogether, they pre
sented a One appearance. The occupants of t hpse
two carriages were presented with handsome bou
quets by ineir admirers, who stood along the side

THE PROCESSION
started, the band flrst, followed by the standard
bearers on horseback carrying the American, Ger
man and Scliuetzen flags. The standard-bearers
were Louis Behrens, Martin Heiberger and Carl
Luerlg. Theu came the four-horse barouches con
taining the king and his special escort. The culef
marshal, Mr. Husher, with a broad yellow sash
drawn over his shoulder and nuely mounted, was
! aided In his duties by the following, all mounted:

THE FESTIVAL.
Upon reaching the park the members were
greeted with a speech of welcome by Mr. Simon
Wolf, and then the festival was formally opened.
Prize shooting and bowling will continue through
to-day and to-morrow. To-morrow the kings
snooting will occur, followe i by the banquet in
lue evening. Tnere wm be prizes lor the ladles in
sho ting contests, amusements for the children,
and dancing.

Henry Hoderman, who keeps a saloon on Penn
sylvania avenue, between 17tb and 18th streets,
is confined to bis Home, suffering from tbe effects
of several blow* on the head, alleged to have been
Inflicted by a young man named Harry McGiue,
who Uvea at eos '.'1st street northwest. The trouble
occurred In Hodenuan's saloon Friday night.
McOiue, with several companions, went luere
about 11 o'clock. Mcuracgave the proprietor an
order tor something to eau The latter told him
mat he diil not net ve meals at such a late hour.

called Uoderinaa "a liar." The latter thereupon
ordered hlui to leave the saloon, and then the light
began. The proprietor leaned forward as tnough

Leading Citieens Dead.?Jouu Mason, of Wood
law n, who, some forty years ago, established with
OllUnguam, HtJght, and others the northern set
tlement on the edge of the Mount Vernon estate,
died there at the age of ninety years last Prlduy

of the National Museum of Washington. His
funeral will be attended by a large assemblage,
