A MISERABLE MARINE.
A Man's Desperate bat Unsuccessful
Attempt to Blow his Head Off.
Shortly after the breakfast bell rang at the
marine barracks yesterday morning, and most
of the marines had entered the mess-room,
they were startled by hearing the report of a
rifle fired in one of the sleeping rooms. Invssti
gation showed that the shot was fired by one of
their comrades, John H. Logne, who had
attempted to take his own life. The weapon
he osed was found on the floor beside him. He
had shot himself in the month. How he man
aged to accomplish this with a Springfield rifle,
the weapon he had nsed, was a mystery nntil
the gun was examined by one of the marines,
who found a string tied to the trigger and the
other end attached to his foot. Although bo
badly wounded, the sufferer was not uncon
scious. He was removed to the Naval hospital,
where the surgeons found that he was proba
bly fatally wounded. The interior of his
mouth was torn in shreds, but the bullet, in
stead of entering bis brain, as ho had intended,
passed into his neck and lodged near the spinal
column. Logue is about forty-three yearn old.
He came here a few days ago from Pottstown,
Pa., and re-enlisted. He was discharged from
the Marine corps at Philadelphia about a
month ago, and nad seen about fifteen years'
service. He had saved boveral hundred dollars,
and when his term of enlistment expired be
went to New York, intending to go into some
business other than carrying a musket for Uncle
8am. While in New York he was robbed of all
his money; so he came here and re-enlisted.
He had suffered considerably from the effects
of a spree and remained in his room Saturday.
When his comrades left him in his room yes
terday morning he appeared to be sick, but
none of them thought of his attempting suicide.
He has no relatives in this city.
Dr. Welling on a Subject of Current
and Eternal Interest.
To the Editor of Thi Evkkiho Htab:
Those who were present in the parlors of the
Y. M. C. A. building yesterday afternoon en
joyed a rare privilege in listening to a thought
ful and practical address by President Welling,
of the Columbian University. He chose for
his theme corrcct discernment of religious
truth, and showed by many quotations from
the Bible how slow the ancients wcro
in discerning the great truths of tire
scriptures, and how incliucd they were to
place a literal interpretation upon the para
bles of the Bible. He maintained that the
leading object of the Saviour in using parables
was not to impress facts upon his hearers, but
to test their power of discerning the great
truths that form the foundation of faith.
Among the dangers that now beset a discern
ment of truth in religion, the speaker said, are
carnal feelings, a too literal interpretation,
sluggishmess in searching for truth, and a carp
ing, hvpercritical spirit in listening to the ex
| pounding of the scriptures, und in the endeavor
to question the principles therein contained.
The large number of young men present lis
tened most attentively to Dr. Welling'* address
and carried away thoughts which will doubt
less prove of the greatest benefit to them in
the moral and religious life.
The Y. M. C. A. organization is doing an
amount of good to the young men and boys of
Washington which few appreciate. The men
who manage this noble association are earnest,
faithful, practical Christians, and their organi
zation deserves not only our sincere admira
tion, but also our warm and constant support.

as entertainers. Mr. Hubbard was a favorite
pupil of Hcnschel, and his voice is said to be
of a notably good quality.
Accidentally Shot.?Mr. 8. Oleason. pro
prietor of a shooting gallery at No. 523 7th
street, was accidentaltv shot in the head Satur
day night bv a man who was engaged in rifle
practice. The customer had leveled a rifle,
and. as he pulled the trigger, Mr. Gleason
stepped in front of the target. Inctead of
striicing the bull's eye and ringing the bell the
bullet entered Mr. Oleason's head and drew
blood. The wound was dressed at the' Emer
gency hospital. No arrest was made, as the
shooting was purely accidental.

The Plain Truth
Is that Hood's Sarsaparilla has cured thousands of
people who suffered severely with rheumatism. It
neutralizes the lactic acid In Ike blood, which causes
those terrible pains and aches, and also vitalises and
enriches the blood, thus preventing- the recurrence of
the disease. These facte warrant us in urging you, if
you suffer with rheumatism, to give Hood's Sarsapa
rilla a MaL
"I had rheumatism so that when I sat or laid down
I could hardly get up. Hood's Sarsaparilla has almost
cured me." P. Caches, Gallon, O.
N. B. If you make up your mind to try Hood's Sar
saparilla, do not be induced to take any other.
