Colored Prisoners Resist a Policeman.? Yesterday afternoon Policeman Hughes, of the first precinct, went to Nary place, near 6th and O streets southeast, to arrest Grant Thomas and Benedict Campbell, colored, who were en gaged in a tussel. When the officer placed them under arrest they resisted, and Thomas struck the officer. Being unable to keep them both off without the use of something more effective than his fist, he drew his blackjack, with which he subdued Thomas, and then he struck Camp bell with his fist. Policeman Kraemer appeared and assisted his brother officer and the col ored men ware locked up. Three hundred and twenty barrels of oil, a shed and eight freight car* were destroyed. Several gentlemen of the county and the District have so far interested thetnoelve* in the matter a* to empioy Mr. G. M. Audereoa. a civil engineer, to tumine the route and giv* the probable cost per mile of the improve ment. The citizen* of this part of the count* are alive to the importance of thi* work, and would, no doubt, *ub*cribe liberally to tha stock of a company m the hand* of *olid enter prising busmen* men. Two route* are available for the proposed road, one on the bed of th* present pike and the other on the line at the old Georgetown road, which leave* the pike at Betheada poet-office and connect* with it again near Montrose, about 8 mile* from thi* place. The latter route i* comparatively level. having but one hill of any consequence on it. 1 luring the last two years a large portion of this ola road has been piked by the farmer* living along the route. The route by the present turnpike is a succession of lulls and valley*, but would have the advantage of having a Urge propor tion of the stone to be used already on tha ground. A proper grading of the road would be heavy work, in addition to numeroua culverts which would have to be built. Mr. James O. liabbitt. an old and well known c itizen of the county, is seriously ill at his residence in Oaithersburg. The first game of base bail of the *ea*on waa played at the fair grounds here on Saturday, between the Emerson institute nine, of Wash ington. and the llockville academy nine, re sulting in favor of the latter by a'score of 16 to 12. It has leaked out that during the recent sit ting of the grand Iurv. an auonymou* letter w as sent to that body containing the names of a large number of the citizen* ot the place, and requesting that they be summoned *o appear an.l give evidence in ease* of violation ot the local-option law. After consideration the con clusion was reached that it was a piece of petty spite, and the letter was cousigned to the waste basket. The nomination of That Dawson, as post master at this place, gives general *ati*factiou. Mrs. Martha Magruder. widow of the late Wm. Magruder. died at the residence of her son, about six miles from this place, on Satur day night, iu her seventy-sixth year. Her funeral will take place from the M. E. church south, lu re to-day. Vickery as superintendent of the third division of the railway mail service created quite a ripple of excitement among th* postal clerks here, and the majority of theia consider their early removal a foregone cob* elusion. Washington has recently been visited by ser* eral delegations of othce-seekers from Lynch* burg, conspicuous among them being Judg* Charles P. Latham. Dr. J. 11. Walthall and J. M. McLaughlin, all aspirants forth* postinaster slup. Latham and McLaughliu are Mahoneite*, while Walthall is chairman of the anti-Mahou* faction here. The internal-revenue collector ship of this district, which is uow held by Capt. Ham Shepperd, of Staunton, with headquarter* iu this city, will, it is thought, go to Capt. P. H. McCaull, of Salem, as a reward for his defeat in the congressional race against Hon. Paul V. Edmunds last year. Besides.
