One of the Problems that may be Solved by the Alms-House Investigation. Some of the officers of the Washington asylum, who take their meals at a table in the alms-honst building, complained when recently before Commissioner Wheatleyof the character of the fare. Those who haTe been inmates of the almshouse with whom a Stab reporter has talked have also described the food furnished them as being poor and insufficient. There is, a Stab reporter was informed, a pig-killing at the asylum every week. Several pigs are killed, often as many as six. One day in the week the officers' table is graced with fresh pork, but not in large quantity. The inmates of the almshouse and of the workhouse are also treated to pork once n week. The quantity served to each is so small that The Stab re porter who spent some days among the pris oners in the workhouse calculated that one pig would, under the economical system of carving adopted, go all around the workhouse. It has puzzled some of the officers with whom a Stab reporter has talked to account for all the pigs killed. For instance, the reporter was in formed that about last Thanksgiving time seventeen hogs and young shoats were killed. Still persons about the asylum with whom the reporter talked have no recollection of any un usual feast of fresh pork at that time. What the testimony taken by Mr. Wheatley has cov ered is still" a matter of mystery, aiid it is not known whether it contains the solution of this pig puzzle or not. Recent Robberies. Mrs. Maggie C. O'lirieu, No. 1013 10th street, reports stolen from her house last night a pocketbook containing S12. Kyder Henry, No. 332 Indiana avenue, reports the larceny of an overcoat. H. C. To the Editor of The Evekiso Stab: I beg the privilege of your columns to correct an erroneous impression that might be given by an article in Wednesday's Stab under the caption of "Sick Horses in the Streets." The ambulance spoken of as being at McDermott's is the property of a veterinary surgeon who brought it here last fall, and has offered it to the Washington Humane society for $500, thongh it cost him $700. Neither the W. II. S. nor tho city own an ambulance as yet. Three humane and public spirited women donated $245, and one-lialf the proceeds of the niatiuee on the 11th will give something over $300 more, so that this (or another ambulance,) will now become the property of the society. But there must be horses to draw it and a fuud to sustain the expenses of running it. in order that it may be of use to tho public. Those who think the humane society should do this at present have only to consult the secretary's report for 1888, winch will show how economically the soeietv's meager income has been managed and the very small balance in the treasury at present. Clute is a tinner by trade, and is said to be an excellent mechanic, but whisky has more charms for him than sheets of tin, and the consequence is that he is in the hands of the law. He has a wife and two children, who have a good home at the houso of Clute's uncle, Mr. D. 8. L. Johnson, No. 719 l?th street. Chute does not seem to appreciate his good fortune, for he continues to use intoxi cants, and when drunk does things for which he is sorry when he gets sober, lesterday was no exception to the general rule, for when he got ??half full," as the policeman says, ho went to his uncle's house and used profane and abusive language toward him. When Police mad Smith arrested the young man he ex pressed a desire to get even with his uncle, and asked the officer what it would cost him to do it This morning Judge Miller fined Clute t5 or 15 days. Supposed It Belonged to the Railroad, Chas. R. Reilley. a hackman, left his stand at the Baltimore and Potomac depot yesterday and went into Armory square and cut a bucket of grass for his horses.
