Jnne 1.?The waters which overwhelmed this toau yesterday, carrying death to hundred* atjd misery to thousands, are subsiding rapidly, but as yet it is impossi ble to obtain anything like exact information concerning the extent of the disaster that lias visited this city and the district surround lg. It is no exaggeration to say that there are mourners ill every family. Thousands are missing; it is certaiu that hundreds have been lost, and while many of those who arc now missing and who are uiourued as dead have doubtless been saved, the tinal death-roll will, beyond doubt, bo of appalling length. It is impossible to describe briefly the suddenness with which the disaster came. A WABN1NO SOUND W AS HEAI1D at Conemaugh a few minutes be I ore the rush of waters came, but it was attributed to some meteorological disturbance and no trouble was borrowed because of the thing unseen. As the low rumbliug noise increased la volume, how ever. and came nearer a suspicion of danger began to force itself even upon the bravest, which was increased to a certainty a few miu utes later when with a rush the mighty stream spread out in width and when there was no time to do anything to save themselves. Many of the unfortunates were WU1BLED INTO THE MIDST OF THE STREAM before they could turn around; men. women and children were struggling in the stream, and it is thought that many of them never reached Johnstown, but only a mil* or two below. At Johnstown a similar scene was enacted, only on a much larger scale. The population is greater and the sweeping whirlpool rushed into u denser mass of humanity. The imagin ation of tlve reader can better depict the spec tacle than the writor can give it. It was a twi light of terror, and the gathering shade of evening closed in OK A PANORAMA OF HORROR* that has few parallels in the history of casual ties. Even the thought of such a thing was mad ness and the agony of the struggling, drown ing victims found its response m the bosoms of those who stood wringing their hands in help less horror in view of their friends. Sow and then the waters would wash against one side of the mountain and then to the other side, car rying with them their human freight. And this diversion enabled tho^e on the banks to rescuse many. It will be found that on this account many will be returned to their homes and friends who are now accounted lost The list of dead is therefore a matter of conjecture anu.will not be definitely known before to morrow. Searchers are out everywhere from Johnstown to Blairsville. THE FUOIT1VE8 RETURNING. 9:40 a. m.?The fugitives are returning to the place where a few hours ago they were happy and prosperous but * here all is now desola tion, and in a few hours more the work of systematically searching for the victims of the flood will begin. The water is still too lugh to attempt to estimate the extent of the loss. TH K AWFUL HOKKOK. Fire Adds to the Terrors of the Flood and Rousts Its Victims. New Florence. Pa., June 1.?The calamity of yesterday was as singular as it was fatal. It is now very evident that more lives have been lost because of foolish incredulity than from ignorance of the danger. For more than a year there have been fears of an accident of just such a character. The foundations of the dam were considcred to be bhakv last spring, and many increasing leakages were reported from time to time. According to people ?ho live in Johnstown and other towns on the line of the river, ample time was given to the Johns town folks by the railroad officials and by other gentlemen of stuudiug and reputation m dozens, yes.hundreds of cases, but this warning watt utterly disregarded, and those who heeded it early in the day were looked upon as cow ards, and many jeers were uttered by lips that now are cold among the rank grass beside the river. ONE POOK NAMII.FSS WOMAN who looked with sightless eyes at the gray clouds from the slimy bank of a meadow just below New Florence, wore a smile. It. per haps, had its birth in that spirit of "who's afraid," which has had such awful results. An awful mud-bedraggled, ghastly burden it was that came in amoug the meadow, and vet there was a look of peace on the features tLat brought tears to the eyes of the rough men who found her and who fastened the body with a short string to a post. She had a work-a day life. _ l'oor creature, her hands were rough; her face thin and worn and her hair streaked with gray as the stormy sky just after dawn. Whether incredulity or foolhardiuess numbers its tlood victims by scores or by the hundreds no one yet knows, and it will be many days before the writing upon tombstones anil the tracing of "the unknown dead'' are ended. There has grownup a bitter feeling among the surviving sufferers against those who owned the lake aDd dam, and damage suits will be plentiful by and bye. The dams in Stony creek, above Johnstown, broke about noou yes terday, and thousands of feet of lumber passed down the stream. It is impossible to tell what the loss of life will roll up. but at U o'clock the coroner of Westmoreland county sent a mes sage oat saying that one hundred bodies had been recovered at Nineveh, half way from here to Johnstown. AX ESTIMATE OF 1.200 VICTIMS. Sober-minded people do not hesitate to say that 1.200 is moderate. "How can anybody tell how many are dead?" said a railroad engineer this morning. "I have been at Song liol' tw with my train since 11 o'clock yesterday and I have seen folly 500 persons lost in the flood." J. W. Esch. a brave railroad employee, saved 16 lives at Nineveh. The most awful culmination of the awful night was the roasting of a hundred or more eersons in midflood. '1 he rains of houses, old nilding and other structures swept against the new railroad bridge at Johnstown, ?nu from an overturned stove or some such cause the upper part of the wreckage caught fire. There were crowds of men, women and children on the wreck, and their screams were soon added to tu awixl cbobcs or aoutons. They were literally roasted on the flood.
