Old Sol is rapidly depopulating the cities for
the benefit of the country &nd seashore. The
broad streets and the innumerable ?bud*

know not of. but uneasy human nature calls
for a change. The business man who is

plcasantest oi snmmer reports, and now thut
the hotel accommodations have been increased

j treat on the Atlantic coast. The beach and
1 surf-bathing is splendid, and it would be diffi
cult to find a place whore the fisherman and
the man with a gun can get more solid satis
faction and compensating sport than on Cobb's.
All information can he obtained of A. F. Cobb,

officially declared and announced that the fol

nature of a charity to the needy, and not as *

A SOLESf.V CELEBRATION PROPOSED.
Sheriff McCandless and CoL Hudson Called
on Oen. Hastings yesterday with a riew to
having a grand solemn ending of the Johns
towncalamitv properly celebrated throughout
the state. The idea has the approval of all
who have taken an interest in the fatality. It
is proposed that on the day the state turns
Johnstown over to itt people requiem services
be held in all parts of the Conemaugh valley
*?,r? *he victims of the disaster are buried.
This u to be done as a tribute of respect to
uiis stricken locality, and is to be made a state
day of praver. Many of the unfortunates were
buried without any religious services, and are
no* 'ymg ia unknown graves.
The date for the observance has not yet been
determiued, but will be announced in time for
a proper preparation. The observance pro
posed will be somewhat after the manner of
Decoration day. At an hour appointed appro
priate service* will be held at the various ceme
teries in which the remains have been interred, i
Flowers will be strewn upon the graves, making
a fitting euding to the greatest calamity thai
nan occurred in this country.
The sick report announced this morning for
the past twenty-four hours shows sixty-seven
workmen and nineteen militiamen ailing from
gsatric troubles. Two were seuthome and two
to the hospital. I
Five corpses in an advanced stage of decom
position were found among the storm drift
vesterday. They were the remains of John D.
noes, a railroad man; Troy Jaooby, and a man,
girl, and boy unknown.
Considerable commotion wag caused by the
refusal of free transportation to the sufferers
from the flood who wanted to leave the valley.
In explanation Gen. Hastings said the limit of
time fixed by the state authorities for free
transportation, except in extreme cases, had
expired. Toe citizens' finance committee has
assumed charge of the transportation bureau,
und it will be reopened within a few days.
An effort is being made to relieve the most
of the military on Saturday. Many of the most
conservative citizens consider the departure of
to? troops a dangerous move.
THK M'DOW TRIAL.
District-Attorney Jervey's Argument?
The Prisoner Smiles.
After the report of the McDow trial in Tn
Star had closed vesterdsy Mr. Jervey made an
able argument for the proseention. In his
closing remarks be said the defense complained
that Capt Dawson had no right to enter
McDow s house. The shooting occurred in Dr.
McDow's office, not in his house. Dr. McDow
himself, however, had repeatedly sneaked into
< apt. Dawson's house for the most disgraceful
of purposes. He was seeking a victim in the
]MK>r fSwwe girl, she was peculiarly situated.
With the exception of Mr. and Mrs. Dawson
she was entirely friendless. The doctor was
disgraciug his own wife and familv. As au
excuse for his conduct Ue doctor said that the
loer girl was not a member of Capt. Dawson's
family, but only a servant. Are we to assume
from that that servants are fair game for a
lustful man? she was closer to the family
than a servant for ?be was the governess of
the children. It was Capt. Dawson's duty to
protect her. He could not discharge her on
rumors alone, snd he took a just course
in endeavoring to ascertain what ground
there was for these rumors. You
saw her upon the stand. Vou know the disad
vantage from which she suffered when the poor
child was compelled by law to stand a crohs
i xaiur.iaiion suet as is seldon heard in a court
room. conducted with an ability that this bar is
proud of. She d>d herself credit She told the
truth, though at times it compromised and
moriuied her. Compare her bearing with that
or Dr. McDow when he was on the stand.
" hen counsel asked hiin whether he thought
his . oudnct toward her was gentlemanly, he
replied: Well, hardly; she was so willing."
f*r X-tr*e.v ?*>?ed his argument by saying that
?1 , ,,?* Vi1 Fr.08?].v wronged his wife and
child. He told this girl that his wife was a

DR. *'DOW SM1LIXO.
Here Mr. Jervey abruptly closed It was not
an impassioned speech. It was delivered with
no attempt at dramatic effect There were no
sweeping gestures and no rhetorical flourishes.
It was a plain speech, delivered in a plain man
ner. Dr. McDow smiled during the district at
torney s reference to the poor Swiss girl. When
Mr. Jervey referred to his wife and child, how
ever. the expression of his face became dark
and ominous. The district attorney spoke for
an hour snd three-quarters. Mr. Cohen, of
counsel for the defense, begged off on account
of rheumatism in the shoulder, and the court
adjourned nntil 10 a. m. to-day. Judge Kcr
ihaw said that he would keep the court in ses
sion until the case was ended Mr. Cohen will
be the first speaker this morning. Governor
McGrath is to follow him, and Mr. Mitchell of
the prosecution, will make the final argument
Judge Scney as a Compromise.
A. United Press dispatch from Tiffin. Ohio,
says that "there is a movement on the part of
the Ohio democrats to nominate llepr<?seiita
tive Geo. E. Seney for governor. The two
prominent candidates now are J. E. Campbell,
of Butler, who is a high-tariff democrat, and
L. T. Neill, of Ross, who is for low tariff
Neither of these represent the party in this
state on the tariff question, while Judge Senev
is m accord with th? party on all questions In
an interview Judge Neney said: -I have been
nrged by the party throughout the state to
come out as a candidate, bnt I have no ambi
tion in that direction, and while I am not a can
didate. I aiu for democratic principles and the
democratic party, and believe with the right
man at the head and a platform that gives out
no uncertain sound the party will be victorious

that the writer of the letter was E. W Pitts
