'lere Is an awful lot of wirepulling beag
done today in conection with the demecratic
caneus tonight. Those members and tenastore
who are aazious to get rid of the silver qee
tion are hard at work among their colleagues
urging the postponement of the question utai
"eit session.
Few if any. and probably some, et te
Henators will attend the cancues. but they an
trying to influence ite actien from without.
Senator Gorman was on the floor of the House
for a time this morning talking with embers
The slver men are worked up over the attitude
of Mr. German and of Mr Hill (through his
friende here). Both are mid to be anxious to
prevent the Bad bill being sent to the enate.
The silver men are complaining that German
and Hill are afraid to face the quoesu and that
to S themselves the' want the House to take
the responsibility for the death of the 6il.
wuar O~rUi33 MS SAT.
Some of the southern men declare that for
them to agree to smother the bill wald inenre
their defeat at home, and that they cannot af
ford to sacritce themselves in the interest Of
presidential candidates.
-icy .y Uhat it the bill gose to the 8ente
both Gorman and Hill will vote for it and that
they Merely want to avoid that neessity.
MOTRINo wit. C og' TUE caA.
It is apparent, however, that the fact tat
Gorman and HUlI. as well as Mr. Cleveland, ae
urging that the silver question be set aide is
tly perplexing their followers is the House,
nnot likely that anything definite will ceme
of the cancs. but the silver men are ready to
yield se far as to accept a late
date for the consideration of the Bland in
spite of the fact that there is a propt of a
ibuster against the measure which might
carry the fight to the end of the session with
out action unless the committee en ruloe will
interfere to secure a vote.
TUR DSmocAiTc covoNa1oSaSAL CemtMM.
Another question that will come up in the
caucus is the selection of the demoeratic ei
gressional committee.
Mr. Flower of New York was chairmm of
the last congressional committee and his see
cessor is now to be chosen. Mr. Wilson of
West Virginia. Mr. Bvfnum and two or thsee
others are mentioned for the place.
ooiAma4's OLiVE naNCE.
The Arst olive brazach was tendered te te
silver men by Senator Gorman of Maryland
this morning. but it was by no means received
in a spirit which gave hope to the east
era democrats. Senator Gorman eame
over to the House and asked Mr.
Bland and his friends to consent to
the appointment of a "joint cauces committee"
by the democratic Betresentatires and Sema
torn, which should centrol party measures of
legislation during the present session and de
cide what bill should have precede- in tde
order of consideration.
mU. aLAND naie iT.
Mr. Bland rejected the suggestien almed
with indignation. He declared that nothing
would satisfy the free coinage amen of the
House but the passage of the free
bill, and that, too, at a& early day.
served notice, so to speak, en Mr. Gorman and
the eastern democrata that no postpooement
or dallying with the questios would be permit
ted by the free coinage men. He insisted that
the issue must be met and that, so far as the
House is concerned, a tree coinage bill must be
passed. Particular stress was laid by Mr. Bland
upon the intention of the free silver people in
the House to pas a bill regardleom of the sead
meatsof the democratie Senators, and be asserts
that no joint caucus or joint committee weld
be allowed to exercise any dictation what
ever in the matter. It is the intention Or the
free coinage mns tonight to a ressn
tios in the caucus of dem presese
tives iaolaing that the MU-se m p-'- a bau
coinage bill this ssom and amsing a
its consideration. Lively ticssiticbe
made to any propositioby Mr. urer
or his friends that the .estors be given a
voice in the caucus. A number of the dome
cratie advocatesof free coinageare absent frees
the city, but Mr. Bland and his friends feel
confident that they have amcni stiengtk to
control the result in tonight's cances,
A OtTITU P11owouiTIOg.
The opponent of Mr. Blend and i el
leagues are preparing a counter proposition,
which they will present and Upon whick the
battle will be fought. This propo
aitio: will name a date or instruct
the committee on raks to name a date
upon which the free coinage bill shall be
taken up for discussion, and eall be the
only subject of discussin for e
week or longer. At the e tratie of that
time, however. it shall be understood
that a motion for postponeament of
final action shall be is order and that no vote
shUal be taken en the Bland bill untl Doom
ber 10-after the prsideantial election.
This program, they contend. would en
able all the free coinage men to de
Clare their position in the House and ae
their speeches next fa for whatever practical
effect they might have in their respective dis
tricts. At the sasme time the democrate
as a party would be the
naeessity of recording ws upon
this precarious issue until after the
general elections when the BinA bill could be
taken pand considered without regard to its
Z= oton the party.
