It is an ex. tretely neat and well-made article. It looks well and handles well. It has great resiliency-dropping the inflated tyre from a height of four feet. it rebonded to exactly three inches of the height from which it was dropped, showing that the amount of force lost is in. finitesimal. The tyre is by no means heavy. indeed it is light, and the valve io rimplkity itself. There is a non-return valve in the ptunp. and the air is kept in by crues pressure on the tube applied in an extremely simple and ingenious maner. -The Cyclit. Cvesenfr. Harrison's Strength May Be Thrown to Ohio's Governor ON THE SECOND BALLOT. Harrison Said to Lack Forty Votes at a Nomnation-McKinley Will Have Thirty ea the First Mallot-some Harrisen Vote, to Go to Blatne. Speial Dispatch to The Evening Star. MINNEAPOLIS. MINN., June 6.--The Harrison lieutenants expect the nomination of McKin ley. I have it from one of Mr. Harrison' most prominent and trusted lieutenants that after the first ballot the Harrison forces will be thrown to McKinley. He tells me that Harrison now lacks forty of enough to nominate him and that they have little hope of nominating him on the first ballot. A few of his votes will then go to Blaine according to my estimate and the rest, under direction of the President, will go to Mc Kinley. This expectation is that enough votes will be drawn from the other side to Mc Kinley to make his nunination sure. McKinley is expected to'get thirty votes on the first ballot before the break is made. ELECTED TO SUCCEED FASSETT. The New York delegation at their meeting this morning elected Frank S. Witherbee of Fort Henry member of the national committee, vice Fassett. who was not in the race. Wither bee is a Blaine man from his shoes up. The Iowa Blaine clubs, with brass bands and more enthusiasm than this city cnn hold without an explosion. are marchirg on the con vention. The band: mre fairly shaking the halls of the West. Following the Iowa Blaine clubs came the Young Men's republican clubs of Maryland. three-fourths of them shouting Blaine and the rest silent. Then came the Cincinnati Blaine Club with a band louder than all the restand shouts that almost drowned the sound of the big horn. THE COLORED TOTE. The question that is perplexing the Blaine folks is how to eliminate the southern vote. The Harrison folks show remarkable nerve in the face of the noise and are doing the best work they know how to do. When Mr. Douglass entered the hotel and went to the Harrison headquarters there was a loud cheer in the crowd. Almost superhuman efforts are being made by the calm leaders to calm the intense excitement that exists. The question of the hour is how to hold the convention down to calm reason. Mr. Harrison's efforts, by use of the wires, to check his friends in their denunciation of Blaine, have had a good effect. McKinley is working very earnestly for Harrison and says he will be nominated. atAINE MEN NETTLE ON na5SETT. The Blaine forces have practically settled upon Senator Fassett of New York as their candidate for temporary chairman of the national convention. A BAsELESS BEPOnT. At 1 o'clock Senator Cullom of Illinois made the following statement to the Associated Press in regard to the statement of one B. C. Marsh, claiming to be a rel tive of Cullom. that the Senator hal received a communication from President Harrison authorizing him to withdraw his name if he was not nominated on the first ballot: -I never heard of B. C. Marsh before. His state ment is positively and absolutely without foun dation-not the slightest foundation for it on earth. I have not received any let or tele gram from Harrison for six months and he has never communicated to me anything in regard to his desires in this matter. The whole thing is a pure fabrication. B. C. Marsh is no rela tive of mine-I never heard of him." MARTLAND MEN ON HAND. The Maryland delegation and the Young Men's American Club of Baltimore arrived at noon today. The delegation stands fourteen for Harrison and two for Blaine on first ballot. The club presented a magnificent appearance as they marched through streets with tin um brellas manufactured in Baltimore out of American tin. OEN. PoETER SUEPOETED BT TUE EAmEISONIANs. The Harrison men continue to talk of (en. Horace Porter as their candidate for temporary chairman, but thus far have not come to any definite conclusion. Senator Carey of Wyoming. who has been one of the staunchest suppoersers of the Preri dent, and is in the councils of the Harrison men. said this morning that the Harrison folks would certainly antagonize Mr. Fasaett whenever an effort was made to nominate for temporary chairman. They would not agree, they paid, upon sack a prominent man and so strong a supporter or Mr. Blaine for the position. A close friend of Senator Quay said this morning that the Elaine men Intended to push Fassett and would carry their point. The national committee would not meet until I o'clock and it would then take a vots on tern pr chairman. There was a great deal of ton and gossip as to the pemnent e irman of the convention, but boh sides said that no conclusion had beesn arrived at on this matter. YOUNG ELaiNE MEN VEoM cINCINNATI. 'Ue Young Men's Republican Elaine Club of Cincinnati arrived in the city this foirenoon and with It came another bless of mlaine enthu saasm.the famous Cincinnti bmnd, said to heone of the fnest hands in America, accompanying the club, and as ex-Gov. Foraher met the club at the depot there were hilarIous cheer. for the fiery orator of the backeye state and the band struck up an air of welcome. The maarch froms the depot to the West House was a triumphant one. Ex-Oov. Foraker, in a caryiegs, led the column, and as the white-hatted young repub licans, several hundred stemg, followed they were loudly cheered at every ecrnes. The tituatior scre is one of great excitenment and anxietl. bul here is less noire and coufnsijon than usual, 'he assemblage is in a sensational Wand. bu1 the leaders look so seriouslv umn the nituatint mnd the crowd know so little about it that then ,s not as much shouting :ad will talk a+ then night be at a convention whwre it was a-tree-fao all tight. The old and stoa lv politiciants art haking their heads over the' dangers of tb< party that lie in the rupture between Mr. Ilain Ind Mr. Harrison. The tremendous seriousnea of Mr. lilaine' action in retiring from the cabinet is impre. ng itself more and more tlwat the leaders at they come to sit quietly and talk the matter ver. Every one recognizes that the situatiot is one of great danger to the party and that the 'onsequences might be disastrous if ary mi+ takes were made t o +hat the bitterness of feel. ing might become more intense and the rup ture become broader. The Blaine organizatiu.t here a a composite b.sly. Some if them an arnestly for llaine and others are for biimionl because that through him they can beat Mr Harison. There are indications that some of the latter have been counting on the state of afairs aria ing which would make it easy to turn the oplus uition to Harrison over to tie stpport of mom third man. These men are embarnased by Mr Blaine'a re-ignation. an it renders such a miv litijcult if not absolutely ampossible at thit time. THRI "rUiRD WAN." Tili linen are undoubtedly drawn elner and it reall' kooks as if it would he imoatsible to bring a third man into the race. 3LAINE AND ALOES. It is said that there was some correspond puce between maine and Alger before Mr Baine resigned. Mr. Alger's greatest drain in to defeat Mr. Harnson, and in addition to thi be has a very friendly feeling toutrd Mr. Maine Wheu'the announcement of Mr. Blaine's res nation was made tien. (larkotn, as stated in tb dislpatches. telegraphed at once to Alger to can to Minneapolia. Home of Mr. Alger's friend thought, however, that this step was ill advised aned he was telegraphed to diregard that ens sage and remain away. A very close friend o Glen. Alger's "id to tar $ ran corresponden in explanation of this that (lea. Alger was read: and willing to make any sacriice to serve th nomination of Mr. Blaine and that he woub come on here and work for laine if it ea necesary. Mr. Clarkson was moved by a desire to strengthen Blaine's lines in every way pmasible but Mr. Alger's friends here believe that hi presence was not necessary and that his comia would in all probabilty take him out of th race na the rice presidential candidate and h had better remain at home. Therefore Ben Alger did not arrive yesterday. but instead menm a telegram directing that his headquarters b closed and announcing that he would not be a candidate for the presidency. The result n len. Alger's retirement is that (en. Harriai get four of the Michigan votes and Mr. Blain all the rest. It also leaves Blaine and Harrison the cal: candidates in the field, and of course if no os else is brought forward the contest mnat in evitably be settled on the first ballot. tr has been some figuring to avoid this situation but both factions are afraid to have their vote divided, as it is evident that no candidate pa in the field for temporary service by one fac tion could draw any votes from the other. 16 Harrison supporters profess perfect confidene that their favorite will be nominated, but it quite evident that they are more anxious thao they have been at any time heretofore. In fac bot siden are uneasy at being brought to fac each other directly. however great their ex prmmioni of confidence may be. cOOrrD3uca or Tan Iakasaongagg. The Harrison supporters have secovere somewhat from the shock given them by Mr Blaine's resignation an they are standing al to the fight with remarkable Gesmnus. Din patches have been received from the Whit Howse cautioning them against the abuse of Mr Blaine wahich they were indulging in. and sine that there has been less show of bitterness oi the surface.
