Harvey IAester Lowman, sixty-two yewrs old,
Iew In jail at Psterson. X. J.. without money
or means of getting a living, awaiting the action
of the county authorities. According to Lw
man's story he ought to be enjoying a fortune
Instead of being in a prison cell
Lowman say he left hi. home. Branch Geange,
Mana4as. Va.. about two years ago to settle in
New Jersey. to be exempt from furnishing
bonds in a suit he desired to press ag-inst a
ssdent of Montclair. He made the acquaint
ance of Ad-lison Ely. a lawyer living in Ruther
fa rd. N. J. Lowman was requested to call on
this lawyer at Squire Hayward's office on Sep
tember 4 last He mare he got into a dspute
with the squire and. he alleges, the latter
pushed him fro. the door.
Ile fen back. struck his head on the pave
met and lost consciousnees. He was taken to
t. Joessph's Hospital. Paterson, by Deputy
erviff Jones and remained there until last
Friday suffering from an injury to the spine
and heed.
Lowman inquired for Police Justice Van
Cleve at she police station Friday afternoon.
When told the justice was out of town he broke
down and wept like a child. The police tried
to Wet him, but his nerves had been shattered
by= Illness. He was put into a cell. Low
men said that when a young man he went weft
and worked in many gold mines on Pacide slope
and elsewhere. He invented a pickax and had
it patented in 1L64. He bought land near
Newark. N. J.. in 165, and incorporated the
Warsaw Tool Company, to which he sold the
patent rights for the United States. He still
elaite an interest in the Newark property.
The sale of the patent, according to Lowman,
secured him an independent fortune. He
married a daughter of the late L T. Ludlam of
New York. and went to Europe where he diw
p of his patent right for k ngland. He
ht 60 acres of land in Prime William
eeunty. Va., which he deeded to his wife. He
Se his wife $14.000 worth of diamonds. Mrs.
I=an died not long afterwards, and her
lbther died three days later, leaving an estate
valued at 40.000 to be divided between five
heir. Lowman to receive his wifes share.
The diamonds fell into the hands of Jamee .
Rablford of Montclair. N. J.. who had charge of
the division of the Ludlam estate. Lowaen
wants to sue Riabford for the 0,000 heritage
and the dmo-eids.

gated the doctrines of a new religion, which
still numbers the tens of thousands of euthusi
antic believers.
Yesterday afternoon there was a meeting of
the First society of 4piritualists of New York.
One man arose and stated in the course of the
ewereises that this woman was about to be
turned out of her lodgings. The landlord had
ordered the house vacated ratory to less
jag it exclusively to negroe. Tt something
must be done before Tuesday, on which day
the room would be ready for its mew tenants.
"I thought the best thing we could do," con
timned the speaker, "was to have her comumitted
to some hoastal --
"Never," interrupted a richly dremed young
woman in the audience, "not while I have a
dollar left that I can call my own."
A storm of applaine greeted these remarks.
A dozen men and women, all speaking ex
