The successful trials made with liquid fuel indicate the probability of its more general employment at home and abroad. Lately a British steamer covered a voyage of twelve thousand miles on eight hundred tons of this fuel, and our Navy Dep.trt ment, after laborious experiments, has or dered its use in a certain proportion of tor pedo craft, with a prospective extension through auxiliary types to cruising ships of war. It is, indeed, not hazardous to prophesy the installation in battle ships of boilers fitted for the use of both liquid and solid fuel. Various sufficient reasons justify this sub stitution and association. While, bulk for bulk, liquid fuel is demonstrably more effi cient than coal, Its Isujperiority floes. .not: rest altogether on this higher evaporatve power. Its employment reduceW by three quarters the fire room force needed with solid fuel and the saving in wages, rations and risk is correspondingly great.. It I put on board more easily, and thus obviates the discomfort, damages and detentions of "coaling ship;" it may be pumped into re mote places where coal cannot be stored. and, ton for ton, requires less cubic feet of space. All this means greater cargo room in merchant vessels, more extended~ralius of action on ships of war and equal safety and less cost in both. Although its economic progress has been retarded by the inertness or fear of Eng land, which is a coal and not an oil-produc ing territory, its value is too great to pie vent its extended use by countries where oil is found or where fuel has to be im ported. At most ports of the world it !s less expensive than coal or articficial fuels, and now that the engineering and struc tural difficulties of its safe and economic employment are largely surmounted a great increase In the number of ships fitted to burn both coal and oil may be expected. USE OF FALSE TEETH. Two Millions Manufactured Annually in the United States. From the New York Times. Probably not less than two millilons of artificial teeth are manufactuted in this country each year, and still the output goes on increasing. Never before was such great care manifested for teeth as has been ex hibited during the past five years. In this respect Americans lead the world, not even the fastidious French exceling the people of the United States in their solicitude for the preservation of natural teeth and in their - application of the arts of. dental scien.ce when substitutes have to be provided for nature's molars. Englishmen are notoriously ca'reless about their teeth, although in late years great progress has been made in.-this 7patter. A prominent dentist of New York declares that nearly every patient with- a- moqthfual of decayed teeth is a foreigner. "Threy -let things drift," he says, "and come only wnr pain draives them here. Americana, and~ espec!ally southerners, -hasten to ~their den tist immediately they detect even the slightest signs of coming tiouble, and the result is that there are by far more 'saved' teeth in this country than - in any other. Englishmen and Irishmen are remarkably apathetic about their molars,, and will go~ about for years with hopelessly decaye teeth." An Indian's Diary. From Harper's Weekly. A teacher at the Hampton school in Vir ginia tells of a Cherokee boy, a student at the school, who recently died, and among whose papers was found one on which was written :"My reasons for coming to Hamp ton: First, to develop all my powers; sec ond, to help my people; third, to learn the idea of self-control." Likely enough there was in this a tincture of boyish sentirmentalism, or a touch-of -that egotism which leads to the outpouring of crude intensities on the pages of diaries. Yet a boy would be -better -o than dull and soggy-,and a good deal better so when he has thought deeply enough to elevate the . idea of learning self-m1astery as one of the important purposes of his school-.life. It occurs to us that this young Indian sug gests the desirability of a: department of self-control in all our institutioD, of learn ing.
