Members Prefer That Location to Any Other ? The Sheridan Statu* Sit*. r Although not Anally settled. It is regarded aa more than probable that the proposed Grant memorial will lie erected In the Botanical Gardens, west of the Capitol. At any rate, that Is the present plan of the Grant memorial commission, to wh:ch was ass.gned the duty of selecting a site and arranging for the construction and erection of the memorial. The commission has ao cepted the design of Mr. Frederick Mao Monnles, the eminent American sculptor, and has entered into a contract with him for the construction of the memorial. Two sites were considered, one on the ellipse south of the White House, and the other in the Botanical Gardens, and the members have practically decided in favor of the latier site. There may be some op position on the part of the authorities ot the Botanical Gardens to this use of that reservation, but it is believed it will not suffice to oflset the authority conferred upon the commission by the act of Congress making provision for the memorial. It is expected that the commission will meet in a short'time and take final fiction in the matter. _ It has been also practically settled tnat the proposed statue of General Sheridan shall be erected In Sheridan Circle at the Intersection of Massachusetts avenue and 23d street. This location wes selected by the statue commission at the request of Mrs. Sheridan, who gave it a decided pref erence over the alternative site In the Presi dent's grounds, south of the State Depart ment. Other Memorials. No definite action has yet been taken with reference to the site of the proposed statue in memory of MaJ. Gen. McClellan, provision for which was made by special act of Con gress, approved March 3, 1901. It has been suggested, however, that It be erected In Franklin Square, which, so far, Is without a statue of any kind. The committee of the Society of the Army of the Potomac, which Is Interested in this matter, has expressed objection to the proposed placing of the McClellan statue In either the reservation south of the White House or in the triangle at Pennsylvania avenue and 13th street, in front of the National Theater. Similar questions are also pending before the authorities in regard to the statues of Pulaski and Von 8teuben, provision for which was made at the last regular session of Congress. It is generally understood however, that these statues will be placel in Lafayette Square, one on the northeast corner and the other on the northwest cor ner, as companion pieces to the statues of Lafayette and Uochambeau on the two southern corners of that square. The com mission charged with the settlement of these questions with respect to the Pulaski and Von Steuben statues will meet at the War Department In a few days. $1.25 To Baltimore and Return $1-25 Via Pennsylvania railroad.
