Roam BOfi. ft38 15th st. a.w. aolS-tf.fi I GENERAL NEWS GATHERED ALONG THE RIVER FRONT The tide of trsveJ from this city Is set ting strongly toward river points ajid will continue that way for several weeks. Residing in this city are many hundreds of persons who spent their early years on farms in Maryland and Virginia and who still call their birthplaces home. Each summer they go *there for visits. Many have purchased small places and have built summer homes where each spring tiie women and children of the family go to spend the summer, leaving the men, who have to remain at work, to maks week-end trips to see them. It Is ths movement from this city to such summer homes that is causing the heavy travel. The river steamers are also carrying down furniture In large quantities to fur nish the houses, but as yet the furniture shipments are not as heavy as they will be about the middle of June. At Colonial Beach. Coltons, River Springs. Wllker sons, St. Georges and other summering places along the river, haste is being made to get the resorts In order for the summer business, which will soon open. Work Is being pushed on the repairs to the steamer Wakefield, of the fleet of the Potomac and Chesapeake Stcaiflboat Com pany, at the Newport News shipyard, and it Is cxpected the steamer will be ready to go into service by the 1st of June. The hull Is being rebuilt, the boiler and ma chinery overhauled and other work done that will put the steamer in thorough or der for trips on the river during the sum mer months. As soon as It is definitely ascertained when the Wakefield will bs ready 10 return to service the summer schedules of the river line boats will bs issued and all the wharves between this city and Nomini will have frequent serv ice. The schooner Bessie Jones, the Mary land oyster police ship which patrols ths oyster beds along the Potomac to protect them from the depredations of "pirates." has left her station in the mouth of the Wicomico river, in Maryland, for the St. Marys river, where she will be hauled out for general overhauling of her hull under water and for other repair work. As soon as the work is completed the vessel will return to her station, and during ths closed season her launches will patrol ths oyster beds. Og den, which is tinder charter to load lum ber at Charleston. S. C.. for this city, has arrived at her loading port ar.d s taking aboard h^r cargo. The vessel will probably reach this city the latter part of June and wi'l discharge cargo for John son & Wimsatt. The side-wheel steamer Jane Moseley, used in the celored excursion business on the Potomac, is at the works of the K. J. Codd Company, Baltimore, being over hauled and made ready for service. The vessel is expected to return to this port early the coming month and will tnen enter on excursion s?rvice to down-river points. . In spite of the cool and threatening weather yesterday, tne excursion lines operating boats on the river were well patronized. A large throng went to o lonial Beach, and Marshall Hall wa? well patronized by those desiring a shorter trip. The colored resorts were also well j patronized. j He?How Is it you are always out whSS 11 tall? She-Just luck.?Liis.
