INNOVATIONS INCONSTBUCTION Only Elevating Plane Is Behind Bear Budder? Will Take Pas senger to Sea Girt. AVIATION FIELD. Asbury Park, Au gust 10.? As an indirect result of the fall I of Walter Brookins into the crowd of i spectators on the opening day of the aviation meet the people of this vicinity will probably see some remarkable flying that was not on the program in a Wright biplane, which represents a radical de parture from the present type of aircraft. The new Wright machine arrived at the aviation grounds late yesterday afternoon. It was not intended to bring it here, but it was shipped on from Dayton after word had been sent that Hrookins ma chine was smashed and that a substitute would be necessary. In the new craft there is nothing in front of the driver's seat. The front ele vating planes are gone, and the two main plants catch the air in initial contact so far as the aeroplane is concerned. '1 lie elevating plane?there is only one is lo cated behind the rear rudder, and thus one of the earliest features of the aero plane passes out of existence in this new type. First Cross-Country Machine. The new aeroplane Is the first Ameri can effort to build a cross-country, far journeying machine. It will carry four passengers besides the driver, and a ii\e person flight is promised as one of its first performances. In addition to that, with Orville Wright at the steering levers, it will go jaunting across country over to Sea Girt and return. A passenger will be carried on this trip, and it is promised that his flight will be as steady as if he were in a Pullman car. The new aircraft completely overcomes | the billowing motion that was conspicu ous on Wilbur Wright's first flights on the eastern seaboard, but it sacrifices the ready mobility needed in an exhibition machine for regular meets. For that rea son it is not intended to eliminate com pletely the small planes in front of the main ones, but to begin a work of differ entiation in which aeroplanes for par ticular purposes will be built along spe cial lines. . .. Wilbur Wright's first experimentation toward the production of his new t>P? was made shortly after he made his trip up the Hudson river from Governors Is land to Grant's tomb and return, on that occasion he billowed his way along as if he were fighting a rolling sea or air, and when he next established him self as teacher of the government avia tors at College Park he began a process of correction for the difficulty. One Plane Sufficient. He found that two elevating planes in front were not needed, and that one or them would work practicably in|the rear. That eliminated much of the rolling and pitching motion, and his latter flights at I College Park were made with this devia tion from his original type. Just when he decided that an feroJ plane would be safe aloft with no neck feathers" whatever in front of Its Dlanes is not known. No anncuncemen had been made indicating that^the new machine being shipped would differ lnany way from the standard type familiar to all who have seen the rights in "'when the new craft arrived the in design was evident, and at the head uuarters of the local committee, an nouncement was made of the ?\e.~Pfrthe flight to last ten minutes, within the aviator grounds, and the built it mrsion The craft was being bum, u was learned for competition in the vari ous .ntercitv flights being arranged 'or. and was sent to Asbury Park b^ausa it happened to be assembled when me cail came for an extra machine. Business Men Enthusiastic. The business men who joined together to get the name of Asbury Park in the newspapers through an aerial show, meant to rival that held at Atlantic City, have become hopeless converts to aerial exercises. They held a meeting yesterday at which it was decided t? buy land adjoining the present aviation grounds, circle the enlarged field with an automobile track, park the interior for polo and hold another big aviation meet upon It in a year from now. They ap proached the Wrights at once, and ob tained their consent ti> particpate in the ^Walter V Brookins. who has been con fined since his fall last Wednesday t? the home of Mrs. Abercombie ?ell at Ba> Head, visited the grounds yesterday after noon. His face and nose were still badly swollen from his fall, and he said that five of his teeth had been broken, mak ing it difficult for him to eat. He hopes to take an aeroplane up before the end uf the week. ^ MABS DIVES 200 FElfr. Aviator Makes a Sensational Flight at Sheepshead Bay. NEW YORK. August 1?.?Circling three times around the field at the Sheepshead Bay race track, which is to be the scene of the aviation meet Friday, Saturday and Sunday, J. C. iBud) Mars yesterday startled th* spectators present when he made a headlong dive with his machine from a height of 310 feet. Mars assembled his machine Sunday and Immediately began a sries of prac tice flights in preparation for the meet. He Is using an eight-cyclinder, sixty horsepower machine, much larger than the one he has been flying, and the prac tice flights are necessary so that he can get the "feel" of his new machine be fore entering Into competitions during the meet. The aeroplane was wheeled out on the field late jesterday afternoon, and In a few minqpts Mars was mounting high In the air. and as he passed the grandstand. It could be seen that he was climbing rapidly, although two sudden gusts of wind made the aeroplane wobble danger ously. At a height of 200 feet the aviator made the circuit of the field three times banking his machine at a steep angle on the last turn, and then, throttling his en gine, h plunged toward th ground. When about ten feet above the wet grass the engine was accelerated to full speed, and the machine aisumd an even keel, skimming along over the ground Hi 10 feet before a landing was made. The machine was turned around, and Mars made another flight, this time not rising more than 100 feet. At the turns he banked until it seemed the machine was tipping over, and then made another sensational dip. When it seemed that he was about to strike one of the hurdles in the infield he started his engine and righted the plane, hurdling the obstruc tion and landing on the other side.
