MRS. CHARLEMAGNE TOWER. ttllOSIC M I'ICItB JEWi;i> ATTRACTED ATI'E.\T10\. Another Big Night at the White House. CONGRESS IS HONORED1 Reception Attended by Nearly 1,400 Persons. MANY DIPLOMATS PRESENT Several Cabinet Hostesses to Re ceive Today?Other Events. The congressional reception at the White House last night was large and enjoyable. It seemed more crowded than the last evening gathering there, because at least two-thirds of the first half thousand came early, and the rest of the responding to invitations were not laggards, either. More than that, most of the early comers were in no hurry to leave, for the lure of a pos sible dance in the east ^room or of watching an incipient ball* in progress there is more than the ordinary mortal can withstand. The Marine Band, whose lovely music is neyer half appreciate.! in the corridor, as it drowns out convor- ; sation and reduces the most garrulous to a mute condition, moved over to the east room at 11:30 for the dance pro gram. It ended at midnight. The President, accompanied by several of his aids, made a tour of the rooms after the formal presentations were over, as did Mrs. Taft. who was escorted by Capt. Butt. The President had a bite to eat in the state dining room with several j hundred other guests, and Mrs. Halt, | Mrs. Sherman and the cabinet women ! who had received sat in the blue room I while they partook of some of the dain ties from the llower-decked table in the big dining room. The Vice President, whose smiling face is always in accord with a social occa sion. was here, there and everywhere, j meeting friends at all points. I Two others. Chief Justice White and i Associate Justice McKenna, before whom j all barriers drop, preferred to make their j way to the blue room by- the east room i route. It was quite the slowest advance j made by any of the guests of the even- ; ing. as- both were surrounded every now ! and then. They made their goal, how- ( ever, in due season Mrs. Taft's Gown. Mrs. Taft, who rarely wears the same gown twice this winter at the White House affairs, was in a trained dress of brocaded white satin, which had a tunic j of black marquisette. A border of dark marabou finished the skirt and short , sleeves. Touches of emerald green vol- j vet were effective aids to the beauty and ' ?beComingness of the entire toilet. Al though she carried flowers, she shook hands with the guests. Mrs. Sherman wore white satin brocaded in black. Mrs. Knox was in the daintiest of blue toi lets.
