NEW TYPE OF BUSES ? Vehicles to Replace Those on 16th Street Line. IMPROVED SERVICE PLANS Approval by the Commissioners of Cars Which the Company Has Ordered. Approval has been given by the District Commissioners to a new type of vehicle to replace the present motor buses operated by the Metropolitan Coach Company on the 16th street herdic line. i According to S. Dana Lincoln, president of the company, an order will be placed in a few days for the purchase of several conveyances. It is planned to install the improved service in about two months, as it is not expected that the cars can be manufactured and delivered before that time. In all probability, it is stated, a sixminute headway will be provided. This win not be decided, however, until the Commissioners have approved- a schedule to be submitted by the company. Capacity of New Cars. The new cars will be fourteen feet and ten inches long and seven feet and six. inches wide. They will have a seating capacity of sixteen passengers, the seats being arranged transversely. Provision will be made for both entrance and egress at the front, although the vehicles will be equipped with rear emergency exits. It is stipulated by the Commissioners that the cars shall be equipped with automatic ventilators. ' Although the new herdics will be about the same size as those now in operation, the facilities for entering and leaving the cars will be much better, it is stated, while improvement also will be provided in the ventilating and seating arrangements. Under a law passed by Congress at the recent session, the Metropolitan Coach Company is required to install an Improved service on the 16th street line by not later than February 'J4, 1913. This line extends from Iflth street and Florida avenue down ltitli street to lath street and Pennsylvania avenue and out Pennsylvania- avenue to iCid and G streets. The company is given transfer privileges with the Capital Traction and Washington Railway and Electric Coinpanics at 15th street and Pennsylvania avenue. Commissioners to Regulate. Authority is extended by the law to the District Commissioners to regulate the service rendered by the company. A committee, consisting of ("apt. Mark Brooke, assistant to the Engineer Commissioner; W. A. McFArland, superintendent of the water department, and Daniel E. Garges, chief clerk of the engineer department, was appointed to approve a type of vehicle to be purchased by* the company and installed on the Ikth street line. It is expected that tils committee will continue In existence to represent the Commissioners in dealing with the various motor bus companies operating in the District of Columbia.
