The anecdote was repeated as the witness said Gen. Eckert had related it to him by the Rev. James Veit, assistant pastor of the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes here, testifying for the defense. 1 "In 1862," he quoted Gen. Eckert as saying, "when I was an officer in charge of the telegraph bureau with the rank of captain, Secretary of War Stanton called me to his office. He told me that he had received advice thai I was not attending to my duties, and that my dismissal had been written out. While * I was standing speechless before him J felt a hand on my shoulder and some one said: 'I vouch for Capt. Eckert. I < have had occasion to go to his office ? several times and I always found him there attending to His duties.' It was ' Abraham Lincoln. Stanton broke the ! silence. 'I apologize to Maj. Eckert.' j he said." ] ICE ON WAY FROM MAINE. Schooner Brings Cargo to Refrigerate Railway Cars at Alexandria. Dredgers at Work on Dock at Sand and Gravel Wharf. 1,. E. Snioot is having the dock used for the sand and gravel handling business at the foot of 3d street southeast deepened so that lighters and tugs can lie at the wharf without danger of grounding even in the lowest water. The work is being ^ done by a digging macnme neiougiug ?.? Mr. Smoot and the excavated material is being dumped on a portion of the river the engineer officers are desirous of having filled. Recently the channel depth of the Eastern branch was increased and other o work was done to improve the waterway, and it is said that most of the dock owners on that branch of the Potomac will this spring and summer improve their wharves and docks. 1 Tite Smoot machine lias recently completed the work of deepening the water about the piers of the Consolidation Coal Company at Georgetown in order to permit the loading there of large coal-carrying vessels that will take their Cargoes to New England points. i st Halts Initiative and Referendum. * TOPEKA.
