DECLARE LIGHT DAMAGE DONE TO THE DEFENSES Point to Sinking of Three Battle ships and Two Small Vessels With Big Armaments. C..rres|??i.|.u, ?? of the .twtai.,| Kiun HA HI:. Dardanelles. M:in h ?On the shores of the Dardanelles the claim is heirs made today that the bom hardnietit h\ the allies, which came to its conclusion .March 1 resulted in a com plete victory for the defenders of the straits. This coin lusiott is reached liy a com parison of the losses. The allies are' known to have lost three battleships sunk, the Bouvet, the Irresistible and the Ocean, an<1 possibly the Gaulois, which. it is said here, had to be beached at Tenedos. One destroyer and one torpedo boat 01so went down, as well ns a mine sweeper. The destnation of these vessels was accom panied by the loss of life, the details of i-'which are not known here, but they are believed to have been n<?t less than l.i'OO. T hp mmtlit-r of wounded is .said to be high. Here is the damage done by the. fire of the allies along the shores of the straits: In the towns of Kilid Hahr and Tschanak > Kalessi buildings valued at ST.O.OOO were .destroyed by shell fire. None of them was oi. military value. The damage done to j^-Kish artillery may be summed up as Damage to Turk Artillery. | One piece of small caliber and short I range severely damaged in the carriage; j one piece of small caliber, short range and ? somewhat old manufacture, lightly dam [aged in the carriage; one piece of large I caliber, comparatively long range and | modern origin, lightly damaged, but re , paired; another piece lost its ammunition ; hoist, which has been replaced; another j piece lost a part of its platform and still 'another had its turrets indented The loss in personnel was killed and about ; hO wounded, most of them lightly. Sev } erai civilians are here included. |,,I1"'* losses may he added ? hat. little damage was done to the coast de .onse works themselves. The masonrv or the positions had suffered, on the whole, only slightly, and several large Kashas in the protecting earthworks were easily filleo. Tod a > all of the breaks have been ob ! literate,!. i ?,ie 0f tj,e most surprising features of the aftermath of the bom bardment has been the alacritv with winch the defenders of the Dardanelles nave again brought even the "face" of their works back t<. its old and rather pleasant appearance. Few Guns Employed. How many guns the Turks employed against the ships of the allies March 18 cannot be revealed at present. The .Associated Press correspondent knows, however, that the number was small .compared with the armament employed j by the allies, which would appear to nave numbered no less than L'76 pieces of a caliber greater than six inches. Be tween three -nd four thousand shells were thrown by them within the space of seven hours, according to the latest figures obtained here. In armament the allies lost on the Houvet, Irresist ible, Ocean and Gaulois 134 pieces, of ?which lift y -eight were pieces of the largest caliber. I In visiting the works about Tschanak j J\ a lessi it was found that the rather j ancient earth traverses of one of them had resisted the shells of the allies in almost marvelous degree, though for a j the fire had been fairly accurate, j The effect of the allied fire on another i position on the Asiatic side had been the same, more or less. | <?,, this fort the superdreadnaught , Queen Elizabeth had concentrated her j fire. i'he yard was pretty well cut up J and many shells had fallen short in the water in front of the position. W hile the traverses had been hit sev eral limes, the shell had penetrated in only one instance far enough To do i damage. Another shell had passed be ! tween two traverses and done some j repairable damage to a piece of small caliber and comparatively short range, j Many of the shells intended for this fort llew so high that they struck more than two-thirds of a mile behind the town. DISPLAY OF VALOR UNDER HEAVY FIRE British "Eyewitness" De scribes Latest Stages of Battle of the Ypres. INSISTS GERMANS USED ASPHYXIATING GASES Says Turning Point Came April 26. When Teuton Rush Was Met by Counter Attack. May 4.? That the German* used asphyxiating: gases, not only on the flrst day of the battle of Ypr<??i hut repeatedly afterward, and that, many of their infantry were affected and unable to join In the charges, declared by the British "eyewitnc?* " in his story of the latest stapes of the hattle. The turning point hi the battle, he says, came on the afternoon of April 2?>, when, after the Uernians had de livered a number of fierce assaults and had pierced the allied lines near Broodseinde, a strong, combined coun ter attack was carried out bv the French and British along the whole front, from Steenstraate to St. Julien This caused a definite check to the German offensive, relieved the pressure ami gained a certain amount of ground. "During this counter attack." sa>* the chronicler, "the guns concentrated by both sides on this comparatively narrow front poured in a great vol ume of fire. From the right came the roar of the British batteries: from the left the rolling thunder of the *Soi\ ante-quinze' (French 7.j? centimeter uuii). and every now and then, above the turmoil, rose a dull boom, as a huue howitzer shell burst in the vi cinity of ?Ypres. Infantry Storms Trenches. "(Hi the right our infantry stormed the German trenches Hose to St. Julien, and intheevening gained the southern outskirts of the village. In the cen ter they captured trenches a little to the south of the Bois des Cuisinirs, west of St Julien, and still farther west more trenches were taken. This represented an advance of some 600 01 TOM yards, but the gain in ground could not at all points he maintained. "Opposite St. Julien we fell back from the village to a position just south of the place, and in front of the Bois des Cuisinirs and on the left of tlie line a similar retirement took place. "The enemy made extensive use of his gas cylinders and machine guns placed in farms and at other points ??f vantage. None the less, the situation at nightfall was more .satisfactory. We were holding our own well along th* line, and had made progress at some points. On the right the enemy's at tacks on the fj^>iit of Gravenstafel ridge had all been repulsed. "In the meantime the French had achieved some success, having retaken I,izern, and also the trenches around Metsas, captured some -.">0 prisoners, and made progress all along the west bank of the canal. "Heavy as our losses were during the Jay, there is little doubt that the enemy suffered terribly. Both sides r ere attacking at different points. The fighting was conducted very largely in the open, and the close formations of the Germans on several occasions pre sented excellent targets to our artil lery, which did not fail to seize its opportunities." Describes Another Counter Attack. The eyewitness describes briefly an other counter attack on the 27th, and adds. "But the situation remained very much as it had been on the previous day. The Germans doubtless were much encouraged by their initial suc cess, and their previous boldness in attack was now matched by the stub I born manner in which they clung to their positions." After that the Germans did not in ' terfere with the allies, which, says ih?? chronicler, "was not surprising in view of the fact that they had been fighting for over five days." Pays Tribute to Airmen. Vaying tribute to the work of the aviators, he particularly mentions an unnamed airman who lost his life in a raid on Courtrai. "The aviator," says the writer, "started on the enterprise alone in a biplane. Oil arriving at Courtrai he glided down to a height of 300 feet and dropped a large bomb on the rail way junction. While he did this he was the target of a hundred rifles and machine guns and of anti-aircraft armament and was severely wounded in the thigh. "Although he might have saved h'S life by at once coming down in the enemv's lines he decided to save ins machine at all costs, and made for the British lines. Descending to a height of only 1 on feet, in order to increase his speed, he continued to fly and was wounded again- this time mortally. H still tlew on, however, and withou coining' down at the nearest of ou: ae: odroines went all (he way back to his own base. where he executed perfect landing and made his report. He died in a hospital not long after w ard " Work of Machine Guns. Mention also is made of a machine gun detachment, the men in which kept their gun in action until all wets dead or wounded. "The gun was stationed in an angle of the trench." says the eyewitness ??When the German rush took place, one man alter another of the detach ment was shot, but the gun still con tinued in action, although five bodies I ia\ around it. When the sixth man f took th?- place of his fallen comrades, of wiiori: one whs his brother, the Get mans were still pressing on. He wait ed until they were only a few yards awa> and then poured a stream of bul lets on the advancing ranks, which broke and fell back, leaving rows of dead. He was then wounded himself.
