Gray and Silver BY ANNE BITTENHOTTSE. Sp-vial Correspondence of The Star. NEW YORK. October 22.?Cheruit herself likes gray. Probably this fact is responsible for the number of exquisite frowns and wraps of that shade which come from this house on the Place Vendome. Chinchilla fur, moonlight velvet and satin, mauve, white and gray, are tones that she can blend and build into something very lovely. She can manage silver lace with skill, an art which is not given to every designer, and she rarely, ir ever, manges in iuc tones of gold lace or braid, or metal cloth. Always*she has clung to colors that! CHERUIT MODEL. SKIRT AMD COAT OF GRAT VELVET WITH SILVER LACE BODICE. Today's Household Affairs j BY MARY LEE. Jl; ill Make GrocerstClean Up. "It is a funny thing about this old human nature of ours." Mrs. Happy Homemaker picked up her work with a little sigh. "Every one of us thinks the other fellow's job is so much easier than our own. The women in the city think it is the simplest thing in the world to persuade the shopkeepers iir a suburban or country community to clean up because there are comparatively few of them, and they may be individually approached and controlled. "Women who live in smaller centers feel that it would be an easy proposition if the dealers were rendered a little less independent by the fear of competition and the loss of customers. But I must say that on the whole the men are reasonable and willing to receive suggestions. "You see, we may keep our own kitchens, cupboards, pantries, closets and iceboxes as clean as laboratories, and yet our care goes for almost nothing If the stores where we buy our food and the men who serve us fail to observe even the most fundamental rules of cleanliness. That is what we tell our dealers, and in most instances they frankly say. 'That's so! These things should be done. We had not thought of it in that light before/ "For example, no one likes to think of sugar being taken out of the barrel by a clerk whose hands are black with grime: hut this is done. I have seen it. and sugar is generally used without being cooked. "No one likes to think of fruits and Vegetables and often staples like flour 'and cereals, being kept in a dark cellar stockroom, infested with mice and1; . bugs, whose wooden floor is reeking [ with dampness, but this is done. too. j and in some of our 'best regulated' ( grocery stores. Of course, it is not j pleasant to tnnK oi inese inings, mucn i jess to undertake to remedy them, hut we women who have elected homemakfng as a profession are beginning to develop a sooiai conscience. "We are beginning to realize that in this larger housekeeping we are under- | taking, each woman must feel her re- ; flporisibility and constitute herself a; Sort of inspector. "We know that by Insisting upon 1 sanitary shops and clean people to serve in them, we are not only protecting our own homes, but all homes, and rousing an interest which will in time be active for the preservation of the public health." *?wift Sc. I1 I I. did not proclaim themselves across the street, just as she has believed that s drapery swung around the body is more 1 effective than ornamentation gotten t through the application of another col- 1 or or fabric. It is because she has fol- s lowed these creeds so successfully s through her costumery that her gowns c rarely go out of fashion. Barring a l few minor details that have to be al- e tered, one can wear a Cheruit gown for a seasons after it was made. Her clothes appear tto be more simple t than they are. One who goes through j the world without a personal maid, as do so many Americans, even when * there is plenty of money to have one, has a difficult time with a typical, t Cheruit frock, yet, after the drapery t is well adjusted and all the hidden hooks and eyes made to meet, the ef- * feet is that of a gown that might be c slipped over the head and could be -v fastened in the dark. Whether the house will continue to work on the same lines without her presence is not easy to tell, for nothing shows so quickly in the making of gowns as the I absence of the master mind. The ability to make one's touch felt through j any medium proclaims the master. No I j subordinate, no matter how well train-) i ed and drilled in the same turn of mind, can achieve the same result. In Gray and Silver. The suit brought over here from the house of Cheruit shows, however, in a most comforting manner, the same usage of moonlight colors that we are used to see from there. The material of the suit is gray velvet., the fabric of the bodice is silver lace. The two assembled together make up a remarkably lovely costume. Tka./. I. cAmathlncr pnniiniflOftnt in this coat of the one she put out last autumn. That rolling collar is the same; it was launched from this house early in August and was not taken up by the other designers until last spring. It is more exaggerated now than then, and is, therefore, more in keeping with the Girondist styles with which we are by now tolerably familiar. The coat is longer than the majority of the new models, and it is only graceful over a skirt that is reasonably , narrow. Do not make the mistake of ! putting a long, full coat over a short, full skirt. The average figure looks rather ridiculous in the combination. The American designers, the best of them, have insisted with quite some success upon a moderate width in the hem when the skirt is a mass of swirling fabric, and the effect is the proper one. The lack of weight is also a consideration to any woman. The waist line is indicated by a loose girdle that runs through slides at the back and sides, tying carelessly in front. The skirt is entirely plain. The sleeves are long and put into regulation armholes, a trick which Cheruit has always advocated. Even when the world of dressmaking went quite mad over the kimono sleeve, this house went against the verdict and continued to use small armholes and sleeves that fit the arms. ti metal Lace for Bodice. |v The woman who Is in doubt about the a kind of bodice she should wear with s her best velvet coat suit, which she q should keep for formal afternoon af- w fairs, might do well to copy this Idea v of a silver lace one, provided she places the metal over something transparent c: and soft. w Flesh pink chiffon and net serve well, n Gray chiffon is good. The harsh threads -w of the bullion fabric must be softened, c; or the result is crude. u I Take I a J As an inducement f< good for five cents towai Write your name an will be void after Nov. lj Don't fail to cut out neighbors tell you what Cut C If Presented al j This will ei i UTo a reduction of FLOUR. New Things. The latest veil is a square affair of filmy mesh to throw over the whole hat. Or you may have it with a circular opening to slip over the crown.
