Proceeds From Sale of Blossoms Will Go to Help War Sufferers. Washingtonians of both sexes and all ages will have opportunity next Satur day to celebrate "Mothers* day" In unique fashion. Heretofore they have sent "her" flowers, if alive; have worn a lapel flower in honor of motheihood in general, and their own mother:-; it; particular. This year the sporting of the little blossoms will accomplish more than that; it will mark their ap I preciation or remembrance of their own. and, in addition, of the heron mothers of devastated France. Flowers for the purpose will bo of fered for sale at vantage points throughout the District, and the slogan of the day will be. "Honor Mothers day bv buying1 a flower on behalf of tii?- homeless mothers of France." The purchase price of eaeh bud will go toward relieving the distress of 1 ?:?? self-sacrificing mothers of thousands of French patriots. Sentiment and Charity. A Washington business man. go\ - ernment employe or mechanic. \* i 11 put in his lapel a spring blossom expre - sive of his sentiments, and later. by that act, the grief and poverty of soim* patient Breton fisherman's widow. ??r the homeless wife of som< former tex tile worker near Lyons will be, in some small measure, at least, relieved. Plans looking to this novel and benevolent scheme of combining sen timent and patriotic charity were un dertaken by a ? ommittee in charge at Kauscher's this morning under the leadership of Mrs. H. L. Bust. and al ready progress toward its perfection is well under way. Maj. Boy Scouts to Co-Operate. Deputy Scout Commissioner Taylor has promised the co-operation of some forty Boy Scouts, who. although not allowed by their organization to re ceive money, have consented t.- act as the bearers of the flowers and the mes sengers to replenish stocks. Representative matrons and young girls, including a number of the debu tantes of the present season, are to serve as the actual vendors, and by their presence, aided by their words, will remind the men of Washington of the double reason for observing the anniversary, for which the second Sun day in May has previously beeji set apart, but which, for obvious reasons, has been advanced this year to the preceding day. The observance of Mothers* day each spring was started about ten years ago by Miss Anna Jarvis of Philadelphia. The idea expressed by the phrase, "Send her flowers, if possible, her fa vorite ones." soon gained wide and practical recognition throughout the country. iU. S. May 8.?The United State? was represented for the first time in th< entente allied war conferences by Real Admiral William S. Sims, who was present at the recent council of wai here. In connection with the measures discussed by the Pritish and French missions at Washington, the discus sions at Paris are likely to be followed by numerous developments in the part the United States will actually take in the war. Rear Admiral Sims, it is stated, will direct operations, so far as that is pos sible. from this side, in order to avoid the delay and uncertainty incident to directing operations from across the Atlantic. Five nations, on whom the brunt of the campaign against th** central powers now is falling, were represented at the war council. namely. Ureal Brit ain. Frame. Italy. Russia and tli? United States. AMERICANS TO EXTEND ACTIVITIES AT FRONT Will Handle Munitions Transports and Also Seek Officers' Posi tions in French Army. i By th?? Associated Press. PARIS. May 8.?With the entrance of the United States into the war, the American Field Ambulance Corps, which heretofore has confined its duties to ambulance work along the front, has decided to develop two important new branches of its work. These are: First?A military transport service, in which the Americans will have charge of the transportation of ammunition and field supplies at main points where offensives are in progress. Second?A military school, at which the Americans will -receive special training under French officers leading to appointment as officers of the French army after a few weeks of intensive training. Both these steps have been worked I out by Prof. A Piatt Andrew, chief in spector of the American Ambulance Corps, together with the French mili tary authorities, and the actual com mencement of both branches will occur this week. The first section for the transport of ammunition to the fighting front leaves next Wednesday. It will be composed of forty-five Americans d'awn from the leading colleges, with twenty heavy ammunition trucks. It is expected that one additional section .'.ill leave for the front each week. The school for Americans seeking commissions in the French army will be opened today at Meaux, where ex tensive quarters have been assigned for recitation rooms, drilling, dormitory and refectory purposes. Fifteen Amer icans will compose the first class. Blood-soaked clothing led to the ar rest at Hendricks, Tucker county, W. Conf-.r. e Yesterday afternoon Samuel iJon.pers, president of the American Federation of Labor, with the British labor lead ers who have come to this country on his Invitation, railed on .Vr. Balfour. It was stated that the discussion was purely informal and did not cover questions of policy. The presence of the British labor leaders is gratifying to American of ficials, who are anxious to learn now England solved labor problems, both in relation to conscription and an to freedom from strikes and other dis turbances. The system of so-called closed shops where lauor and capital are under iauiual obligation to the government has created much interest, as well as the system by which war work is given preference all along its line of manufacture. Secretary Wilson of the Department of Labor last night entertained the British labor leaders at dinner and dis cussed with them the tim? and place of conferences to be held this week with American labor chiefs. The visitors are anxious to begin the conferences as soon as possible, as it was with no lit tle difficulty that they arranged to leave England at this time. Labor Nspokesmen from other allied countries are expected in the near future. Belgrian Loan Di^cossed. Mr. Balfour held a long conference with the Belgian minister In th? after i noon.
