DRIVE SLOWS UP
Mr. Westlake Certain Wash
't ington Will Respond to
p Appeal.
Tto Hip Editor or The Stir:
As the period of the Salvation Army
home service fund appeal approaches Its
close, it is necessary that a frank state
ment of conditions be made to the
public.
For eight days, in sunshine and In
rain, hundreds of Washington's brave,
jrenerouf-hearted women and girls have
been diligently collecting funds to en
able the Salvation Army to continue its
operations in the nation's capital for
another year. They have challenged the
admiration of everybody by their unsel
and untiring effort.
Meanwhile the men of the city have
iv>t met the situation with a like re
sponse on their part. The (rreat ma
jority of the larce property owners, pro
fessional men and business men. seem
to be trailing for some one to visit them
ao'l coax them to contribute to the fune.
Avhlle the response has been cenerous
from many people, it will be necessary
for a far greater numb-r to contribute
tirfore the Salvation Army can complete
the great work it has started in Wash
ington. ,
This is a critical period in the history
of our government Tlie present unrest
is so traUKht with danger that no less a
body than the t'nited States Chamber of
?*ommerce. the greatest commercial or
"Elnixation in the world, has Just reen fit
to indorse the Americanization plan of
~ the Salvation Army. It is said to be the
only similar indorsement of another
*? body ever riven by the chamber.
Under the circumstances It *etn? to
me that no loyal citizen of the t'nited
States should ws.it to be risked to do his
duty. No red-blooded man or woman
should either deliberately or carelessly
* make harder the task of the men and
women who have undertaken to provide
U^e iialvati'>n Army with the funds nec
? ewan to carry on this important work,
other cities are making good, and
Washington will, of course, finance its
division "f the Salvation Army, regard
less of the effort necessary to do it; but
if the people of this i-ity will come for
wards with voluntary offerings, each in
propej-t'on to his ability, the work will
be happily completed without delay.
1 have such confidence in the loyalty
and generosity of the people of this city
that I beli?v>- it Is only necessary- to get
this thought before them to bring a
quick and generous response.
All contributions should be made by
check, payable to Thomas P. Hickman,
and should be mailed to me addressed
to the mesranine at the Willard HoteL

ATMOSPHERE
The mental atmosphere
of a store is created by
the mental attitude of the
salespeople toward them
selves and toward their
customers.
When salespeople are
brusk, impolite, short and
rough, the materials they
sell will lack an enticing
luster.
We are more than selling
merchandise?this store is
offering a human service.
It is always our ambition
to be considerate, friendly,
square and fair.
