STEEL DEMON MARKETFEATURE Large Independent Concern A ... ku.., ftnnuunues new ociimy Prices?Other Metals. The feature of the steel market this week was the adoption by the largest independent interest of new selling prices, effective immediately, on bars, structural shapes and plates, in Pittsburgh. The reduction brings these commodities down to the basis established by the industrial board. March 21. 1919. Lack of demand and lower prices for coal and coke are held responsible for the adjustment. There appears to be little present inquiry for anything but line pipe and casings. While no reduction in wages was mentioned. It Is believed that a general readjustment of labor conditions must follow sooner or later. Pig Iron Drops. Pig iron also has experienced further downward adjustments in prices and reflects the same lack of confidence which exists In other luiiiiiiuumco. oujcia iciuac iv meet producers' prices, re-sellers continue to supply much of the demand and more small furnaces have blown out on account of lack of orders. The copper market has shown no improvement. The reported curtailment of output has failed to create any general buying Interest, and the feature of the week was the sale by local dealers of a million lot of electrolytic at 14 cents, refinery. Later, there were rumors of a sale of half a million pounds at 13% cents. While not regarded as establishing a general market basis, these reports probably increased the disposition of other buyers to hold off. Boston reports that one of the mining companies there has decided to curtail production to about 400 000 pounds monthly, against a normal output of about 2,000,000 pounds. Other Metals Reviewed. Tin quiet, with leading dealers not pressing sales, which results in moderate firmness on spots. Further weakness is noted in lead for lack of orders, and sales under 8 cents have been reported here. Zinc reflects continued dullness and j a further easing of values, due, in | n?.rf tft weakness in London and ! the unsettled exchange market. l.arge stocks should soon be reduced by the drastic curtailment In progress. and it is believed much of tne supply Is now in fairly strong hands. Antimony dull and easy, with rumors of offers at concessions, following weakness in London.
