By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, January 7.?President Harding tonight Joined with the preaa in paying henor to Edward Page Mitchell, for many years editor of the New York Sun, more recently editor-in chief of the New York Herald, and the man on whose shoulders fell "the mantle of Charles A. Dana." At the twenty-first annual dinner of Amen Corner, an organization of news paper men. to which came 700 guests from many cities, there was read a message from the owner of the Marlon Star, sent from the White House, ex pressing regret that he could not be present ana asserting that Mr. Mitchell had been an inspiration and an object of both his admiration and affection. President's Tribute. "His career covers the beginnings, the development and the acting present of the great era of metropolitan Journal ism In the country." the President's message said. "In all its stages, he has been a leading and dominating partici pant, and the best of all the good things that may be said for him is that he has always stood for the finest newspaper ideals and the most unselfish and pa triotic public purposes. "I wish some of his stories, particu larly some of the whimsical bits of old time reporting that he did, were better known and that that unique institution. 'The Sun Story," were more frequently a model for present-day newspaper writers. "I hope I may say this, in my ca pacity as one of you newspaper men, without seeming to preach from a presidential pulpit." Greatest, Says Harvey. A message from George Harvey, am bassador to the court of St. James, saluted Mr. Mitchell as "the greatest writing journalist, bar none, the world has ever produced." Former Gov. Martin H. Glynn of New York, editor of the Albany Times Union, paid this tribute: "Greeley made the editorial, Ben nett made the news column, but Dana blended the spiclness of the one with the charm of the other, and therein lies the magic compound of the Sun. and in this blending it is difficult to tell where Dana leaves off and Mitch ell begins. "What Dana put into the Sun, Mitchell helped put there; what Dana put in the Sun, Mitchell kept there when Dana was no more. They both believed the newspaper should be founded on human nature; they both believed that what Providence permitted to occur no editor should be too proud to print; they both believed every hu man being Is interesting, whether clothed with the rags of a pauper or the panoply of power." GREENWICH VILLAGE RIVALED BY STAID BROOKLYN HEIGHTS By the Ansociated Press. NEW YORK, January 7.?Green wich Village, famous in story and song: as the abiding place of art, has a rival as New York's quar tler Latin. The presumptuous aspirant?thus characterized by those who love the Greenwich Village section of Manhattan?is the "heights," a section of Brooklyn. About It still clings the odors of sanctity, re calling days of its glory, when it was the center of the fashionable society of Gotham's transpontine siter. But the villagers' scorn pauperizes expression when they are forced to mention it. Where, demands Greenwich Vil lage?than which there Is no more fluent and continuous* a demandtr ?can the poet woo the muse, and the painter find inspiration, but Just oft Washington square? Where can one's emotional com plexes find expression but in the narrow streets and byways still haunted by the shade of O'Henry? Brooklyn retorts effectively, be ing girted rhetorically, but Green wich Village claims the benefit of tradition in all its ramifications. Meanwhile the Brooklyn colony is waxing strong. Of the six judges selected to choose the prise winners for costumes at the yearly art models' ball four reside on the "heights."
