CHICAGO, Octobe'r 6.?The uncertain tenor of news regarding the Turkish situation led to a moderate upturn in the wheat market today during the early dealings. HUGHES. By Sperial Ixased Wire to The Star. 1 ISEW YUKiv, uciooer t>.?yuoiauons had an irregular reaction in the early dealings today in the bond market, perhaps in sympathy with stocks and nerhaps in direct response to the news Vrom the near east, which for the Imoment, at least, was regarded as unfavorable. While various explanations has been offered by the recent weakness in bonds, it is a fact that sentiment in the investment as well as the speculative market has been optimistic or the opposite as the foreign dispatches indicated a turn for the better or the worse. Meanwhile new offerings are absorbed with alacrity. Today example is that of the Milwaukee Electric Railway and Light 5s offered on a 5Vt per cent basis. Subscription books were closed, all the bends having been sold early in the day. Few Important Changes. Liberties did very little and the quotations for the very highest grade of railroad and industrial bonds were I practically unchanged. \ It was in the foreign list that the reaction was most notable. United Kingdom 5*&s of 1937 lost fractionally and the 1929 issue went lower as a result of the decline in sterling ex- j change. French municipals were J soft. Japanese 4s and City of Copen- \ hagen 5Vfes declined, as did both Bel- 3 gium issues. Swiss 8s, however, i equaled the high of the year, and Ar- 1 gentine 7s sold at 102. Maturing ?n 1927, this issue Is regarded as a short term investment yielding about G'i ? per cent. Argentine credit has al- J ways stood high among South Air.eri- J can countries. ] Industrials. Among industrial issues continued ] interest was shown in United States ] Realty debenture 5s between 98 and 1 99 and in Punta Allegre Sugar 7s of : 1937. The latter bond sold around 1 us j to 19SH. Thd attractive feature here ! is that the bond is convertible into stock iij the ratio of eighteen shares . of stock for each 31,000 bond, making ( the conversion rate about 58%. Tho 1 stock sells on the exchange around 49. Commonwealth Power 6s among utilities were again In demand and Sinclair "%s of the oils were strong. Action In Rnlla. Price changes in rail Issues were without particular significance. St. Louis-San Francisco incomes and Reading General 4s, to take two extremes as far as Investment rating goes, were both down, while Chicago and Alton 3s and Central Pacific 3%s, another pair of opposltes, were both up. American Smelting and Refining 5s sold up to 95. The high for the year is less than a point above this price. There was n? further news from Washington about government refunding operations. In some quarters the report that the Treasury was considering a large issue of 2 per cent bonds with circulation privilege attached was regarded as a feeler of banking sentiment, ' , . ; ; . i and Live Stock LOCAL WHOLESALE PRICES. Current strength in Ajax Rubber, 1 one of the most favorably situated of 1 the smaller rubber companies, is re1 ported to be due to accumulation of a substantial long .line by a trader prominent in the auto industry. There is no suggestion that this trader is seeking control of the stock, hut rather is Xuyicg purely as a market operation.
