COMMITTEES PLANNED To Promote Love of Trees, Flowers and Shrubs Object of Nation-Wide Move. Impressed with the great need of a horticultural society in the District of Columbia, lovers of trees, flowers and shrubs will meet at 8 o'clock tonight in the email lecture hall at the new National Museum, 10th and B streets, to organize such a society. Firman Mulford of the bureau of plant industry will preside. A report will be heard from the committee, which has the meeting in charge, two preliminary meetings already having been held. The name of the new society will be adopted, and a constitution and by-laws presented for adoption. * It is expected that several hundred from this city and nearby states will be in attendance, as the need for such a society has been felt for many years. The new organization will be modeled somewhat after the Koyal Horticultural Society of J.ondon. Headquarter* to He Here. Headquarters of the new organization will be in the National Capital. The membership will be composed of members, life members, associates, patrons and fellows. Committees proposed to be formed give a good idea of the scope of the society. They j are: J Committers on plants and flowers, i fruits, vegetables, gardens. chil- j dren's gardens. exhibitions and ? awards, lectures, publications and li- j braries. research, and finance. j It will be seen, according to those j interested, that the scope of the organization is wide, and that much I beneficial work can be carried on by j such a society. It is noteworthy that j the preliminary plans call for two ! garden committees, one to carry on work in relation to adults, and the other to help the children with their) gardens, get them interest- 1 in gar- J dening. and give them advice and aid . at every step. j Plan Awarding Medals. i It also is proposed to award medals i for work in horticulture. 1 he ob- I jects of the soc iety are given as fed- j lows: To promote a love for horti-! culture in its various branches; to ; give illustrated lectures; to inform i the people in regard to the cultiva- j tion of plants and as to the new i plants thai come to the United States j from time to time; to hoid exhibitions and award prizes. Ultimately the socistv hopes to es- j tablish and maintain trial grounds or i experimental gardens, where horti- 1 cultural work can be carried on from j a thoroughly scientific standpoint, at j the same time not forgetting any of j the essential beaufv which marks) this, one of the oldest of the occupa- j tions of mankind.
