WHOLESALE MARKET PRICES.
There was nothing- about the appearance
of the local wholesale prol
cliicc markets today to suggest a scarcity
of fruits or produce of any kind.
Last night's rain promises to be of
appreciable assistance to growers, but
it is yet too soon to experience a drop
in prices.
Strictly fresh eggs are hard to pyjt.
dealers stated, and prices were about
the same as during tilt past few days.
Cold storage eggs are on the market,
dealers said, and prices range at
about 1T? cents a dozen cheaper than
the fresh stock. A further advance in
prices is anticipated.
Receipts of fresh country butter
are light, due. it is said, to the continued
dry spell, and prices are considerably
less than that of choice
creamery stock. Lower prices art; not
expected in the near future.
No more attractive a display of
fruit than that on the market this
morning: could be imagined, especially
western stock. There was an
abundant supply of pears and other!
fruits from California and Oregon.!
prices quoted being a trifle lower
i than the past .few days.
1 reaches are still fairly plentiful and
I prices low. The supply soon will be!
come exhausted, however, dealers
i stated, and persons who have neglected
their canning will do well to make early
purchases.
Choice poultry is far from being plenj
tiful, and there is a steady demand at
; prevailing prices. There has been practically
no ehange in prices the past few
days.

CHICAGO. October 10.?Wheat declined
in price today soon after a little
show of firmness at the out-set.
Initial upturns of the market were
ascribed to higher quotations at Liverpool
and to bullish views taken of
: the United States government crop <
I report as to wheat. Buying, however,
lacked volume and, with corn
tending downward un prjce; the wheat
market gave way in sympathy. The
j opening, which varied from % dei
cline to a like advance, with December
1.07% to l.?7-vs and May 1.08%
} to 1.09, was followed by slight gains J
land then by a moderate setback all 1
j around to below yesterday's finish. j
, Tension over chances of Turkish re- !
I fusal to accept allied terms led to a j
[late advance today in the price j
: of wheat. The close was unsettled, i
j % to net hitfheh, with Do- j
i comber. 1.07% to l.07?s, and May, j
' 1.00% to 1.09%. Subsequently, shorts j
j became uneasy over absence of deft- j
: nite word regarding peace or war i
| with the Turks. Besides, export bids!
I at the Gulf of Mexico showed a con-J
| tinned advance and the wheat market
j here hardened noticeably in the last ]

Rush of Buying Orders at
Opening Meets Heavy
Profit-Taking.
BY STUART P. WEST.
By Special Leased Wire to The Star.
NEW YORK. October 10.?Wall
street today showed that the markets
are entering: an increasingly speculative
stage.
The present operations are founded
mainly on speculation which has in
mind the probability of following the
lead of the Standard Oil subsidiaries
and giving their shareholders, in one
way or another, the benefit of treasury
accumulations, just as the Wall
street campaign of last spring was
founded more than anything else upon
the discussion of the steel mergers
ana tneir effect upon values. <
The markets today went through ]
a series of sharp fluctuations, thus j
tending to prove an increasing in- ]
terest in speculation. ^
History Repeating'. ]
Stock exchange history has had a 1
number of such occasions in the past ]
when speculative enthusiasm has i
been aroused to a high pitch by these \
so-called **melon cuttings." The ex- ]
perience at all these times has been j
that where one-tenth of the rumors
of this and that company distributing *
extra dividends or capitalizing sur- *
plus accounts may come out true, *
nine-tenths is mere gossip. ]
Doubtless this will be the experi- *
' ence likewise in the present instance, I
I but, in the meantime the action of the 1
Standard Oil companies ha? been a ]
I powerful incitement to speculative ;
I imagination, and from the profes- ;
j sional Wall street standpoint, which
I only considers the immediate situa'
tion, rumors can be made to serve ,
! the purpose of putting up prices quite (
| as well as facts.
Effect of ?w Issue.
It could not be said that the in- j
vestment section of the market was ;
any more responsive than it was on .
Monday to the $500,000,000 govern- j
ment loan announcement. ?
The indications today continued to j
point to a very heavy oversubscrip- '
tion, and in the outside market, where
quotations were made on basis of
transactions in the bonds "when is- ]
sued." these again involved a small J
premium.
But this did not have, for the time
being at least, any particularly stim!
ulating effect upon the market genl
erallv. I.iberty bonds were steady
| and so were most corporate issues,
but it was evident that for the moment
the new government financing
! and the uncertainty of its effect upon
| the attitude of investment capital toI
ward other securities were keeping
the volume of business down.
Market Opened With KukIi.
The stork market opened with an- A
other rush of buying: orders, which A
swept some of the steel and equipment
storks forward to the highest
prices of the year so far.
Then came a period of heavy realizing
sales, under which the whole
list sold off sharply, with a quite violent
break in the Standard Oils.
This selling movement in its turn
was checked by equally violent upbidding
of the Mexican oils, hut the
market continued through the afternoon
very much unsettled by these
evidences of speculative extravagance.
I*. S. Steel Tonnage.
The monthly figures of the 1'nited
States St?-cl tonnage?showing an increase
of 741.502 tons?did not quite
come up to expectations, and on their
appearance the rise in the steel stocks
i was halted.
j Nevertheless, the total of nearly
I 6.700.000 tons unfilled business, as of
I September is a highly favorable
; showing.
j It pictures the Steel Corporation in
; the best business position in over two
; years, and is an interesting comparison
with the total of 4.560.670 tons
of unfilled business a year ago. and
with the February low of 4.141.069
tons.

| XKW YORK. October 10.?Weak1
ness in rails and industrials of the
very highest grade was again the
feature of the bond market today.
Quotations showed only fractional 1
losses, but there was steady and per- ]
1 sistent pressure on the market. ;
I Chim Ru rl i n srt on anil Otiinev i?? ^
| were offered in large volume. Atchi- ]
| son general 4s sold below 90. United ]
States Steel sinking fund 5s sold i
down to 102. Union Pacific 4s, Pennsylvania
general 5s, New York Cen- i
tral refunding and improvement 5s \
and Canadian Northern 6**s were '
other instances. In many cases prices j
improved later, but the general trend 1
was unmistakable. ]
For all of this there was only the ]
same explanation advanced Monday, j
The terms of the new government <
4 % per cent loan are so favorable ]
that other securities, admittedly the ,
obligations of the strongest corpora- ,
I tions. were being Gold to provide ,
i funds for the purchase of the new
liberty bonds. {
Other Factor*. j
Other factors, of course, may be in ]
part responsible, but the commonly ]
accepted theory was that prices of ]
investment securities must be read-;,
I justed to meet the yield offered by
the Treasury Department.
The more the terms of the new offering:
were studied the more advantageous
they appeared from the
standpoint of the investor.
Subscriptions for the new issue continued
to pour in. It was estimated
that the total might exceed $2,000,000.000
against the $500,000,000 offering.
The older liberty issues were all
steady today. All the issues sold
around par or slightly below with a
premium for the new issue still bid
in the outside market. This, of
course, is on the theory that there
will not be enough bonds to meet the
demand for subscribers at par.
Action in Foreign Bonds.
Foreign bonds were irregular. Belgian
8s sold lower, perhaps in sympathy
with the weakness in Belgian
exchange. City of Copenhagen 5*/fcs
also declined slightly, while the
French Issues were comparatively
firm. Dutch East Indies 6s. both the
1947 aijd 1962 maturity, were very .
active and generally higher.
The tractions were active and |
>"> ?nrlv roH I r? rr 1 T> i 1 < ,. {
bonds generally were firm. Also the
second grade and speculative railroad
bonds were inclined to be firm. It is
interesting to note that Monday's
bond market was the broadest on record,
a total of 481 separate issues being
dealt in. This is ten more than
the highest previous number. j
COMPETITION IN COTTONS.
Despite advances In some of the
staple lines of cotton goods, a few of
the novelty lines are now showing
recessions. One of the beet known
novelties in the market, a cloth that
was brought out early this year has
been reduced In price to meet' the
competition of imitators. More
quickly than ever before, novelties
are copied almost as soon as they
make their appearance, with the result
that competition is extremely
keen and considerable price-cutting
has reaaliad.
