10 Army Air Service Announces Helicopter Test a Success Design of Dr . G. de Bothezat, Aeronau tical Engineer—Previous Demonstration | by Henry Berliner of D . C. Recalled . The Army air service has devel oped and successfully tested a helio copter, it was announced yesterday. At McCook Field, Dayton, Ohio, the vertically rising and descending air plane was flo'tfn by Maj. T. H. Bane on December IS for 1 minute and ♦2 seconds, and reached an altitude of about six feet. The flight was witnessed by many Army officials and x employes at McCook Field. The announcement by the air serv ice last night said the helicopter was started under construction in July, 1921, and was designed and built by Dr. G. de Bothezat, an aeronautical engineer, under his personal super vision. It has a total weight of 3,600 i pounds. Including pilot and fuel, and has four lifting screws of the de Bothezat plane-radial type, actuated by a motor of 170 horsepower. The system of gearing employed is en tirely novel, the announcement con tinues, specially designed by Dr. de Bothezat for this use, "and the work ing of this system has been excep tionally satisfactory.” Os Full-Size Dimensions. The de Bothezat helicopter was built full size, without preliminary models or tests of any kind; all de -1 tails of the construction were based upon compulations made by Dr. de Bothezat. in accordance with his gen eral theory of blade screws, written for and published by the national advisory committee for aeronautics and upon his theory of helicopter •stability. The machine will remain at McCook Field, where the engineer ing division of the air service is lo cated, and will be put through further and exhaustive tests. ••To Henry Berliner of Washington go ; the palms for perfecting a helicopter." a. high officer in the bureau of naval aeronautics declared last night when informed of the latest progress made in aviation by the air service. "Shis officer said he witnessed a test of Mr. Berliner's helicopter at College Park several months ago and on that oc casion it performed just as satisfac torily as the de Bothezat machine. The Berliner helicopter was experi mented with for many years by Emile Berliner, who in recent years turned the work of development over to his son Henry. It was learned yesterday that the Berliner helicopter has been further developd since the teats last spring, so that it can dscend without mishap should the motor stop while the plane is in the air. Also a new and more powerful motor has been substituted for the old sixty-horsepower rotary engine, and In a few months It Is the hope of the Inventor to make a flight of about twenty-five miles. The only thing that prevents such an attempt now is the inexperience of the pilot, who has not .even had the “stick” of i an ordinary airplane in his hand. Henry Berliner would not discuss the two helicopters yesterday beyond saying that the de Bothezat machine "is more complicated than ours.” FAVORS INDIAN BILL. Special Dispatch to The Star. ROCKVILLE, Md.. January* 13. Montgomery county authorities are i anxious to locate Emory Painter, a 1 young resident of Loudoun county, | Va., who was once in their clutches, I but who, by using his wits, escaped | from Deputy Game Warden Clyde i Harris, much to the chagrin of that j officer. Ho is wanted to answer a charge of hunting game out of season, but it is particularly desired to have him on hand for an early trial on a charge of assaulting Motor Vehicle Policeman Lawrence Clagett. Up on Mason’s Island in the Poto mac river, near White’s Ferry, this county, several days ago. Officers Clagett and Harris, so they say. de- I tected Painter in the act of hunting— caught him, they assert, with shot gun, cartridges, game bag and a dead squirrel. As the season for such sport had expired ten days before, the officers are understood to have felt that their duty was clear, so they started' to place Painter under arrest. Painter suddenly wheeled and pro ceeded to give a demonstration of how a scared Virginian can run. Policeman Clagett Is something of a track runner himself, so he prompt- . ly started In pursuit and was rapidly overtaking Painter when the latter 1 stopped and. so It Is charged, point ing his gun at Clagett, dared him to “come another step further.’’ I Clagett rushed in. and just as he ( grabbed Painter the gun the latter held was discharged, and the load of shot passed close to but harmlessly by the officer. Painter was disarmed 9 -—. ■■ - ■■ ■ I I I— ■ I ■■ ■« ■ LL 1 *” -■■■■— I ■ ■■■■■■■■— ■'■■l. ■ 1 — T— 1 I It is easy to identify the I ! As Clagett lives near the scene of the arrest and did not care to make the trip all the way to Rockville, he Intrusted Painter to Harris, who promised to land him .safely in jail. When Rockville was reached the prisoner complained of being hungry and asked Harris to slip into a lunch room and buy him a sandwich. When Harris returned he found that his prisoner had disappeared. Since then wide search has been made, but the whereabouts of the Virginian remains a mystery. Saturn is the lightest of all the plan ets, its density is only sixty-thre© hundredths that of water. HOUSTON, Texas, January 13. —An informal appeal was made tonight to Judgp J. C. Hutc’ eson of the fed \ eral district court here for protection [ \ for Mrs. U. H. Harrison, who, with R. A. Annand, was the victim of masked doggers at Goose Creek. 1 The appeal was made by a friend of Mrs. Harrison. Judge Hutchesoi) held that he could take no action for the reason that the federal court had no jurisdiction. This appeal to Judge Hutcheson is the only one that has been made to any officer of the law so far by either of the victims. R. A. Armaad, who was whipped simultaneously with Mrs. Harrison, is still confined to his bed in his room in Goose Creek. Five Robed Like Klanamen, Deputy Sheriff T. A. Hamilton of t Goose Creek, in a statement Saturday, said that both the victims have de clared that at least five of their as- < sailants wore robes similar to the i Ku Klux Klan regalia. She said that the men appeared to be divided on the question of.whether their bodies should be mutilated, finally deciding that the whipping and cutting of Mrs. Harrison’s hair would be sufficient. The woman’s hair, long, black and glossy, was hacked off, she said, by the men, who used a pocket knife. CLOCK COMPANY CITED.
