20 RED PLOT TO KILL . RIVERAREVEALED Many Communists Smuggled into Spain by Portuguese Are Arrested. . , JBr tho Associated Press. * PORT VENDRES ON THE FRANCO 6PANISH FRONTIER. December 28. ■—The communist plot, although the first reports were thought to be greatly exaggerated, appears to have been a well-organized effort toward revolution with the widest ramifica tions. The Portuguese leaders in the movement acted In the closest touch with comrades in various parts of Spain, and astutely took advantage of a recent international association foot ball Vnatch at Seville, played be tween teams of Spaniards and Portu guese, in order to introduce Into Spain daring men belonging to their organization. It Is generally reported that the mayor of Seville obtained knowledge of a plot against Gen. Prlmo Rivera, president of the military directorate. He is said to have been Informed that ten professional assassins bad taken up their residence In Seville with the intention of killing Gen. Primo Rivera when he mado his in tended visit there. Round-up Leader*. The government police Immediately took steps to round up the foment ors of the plot, and found documents which led to the arrest of many dozens of communist* in other cities of Spain. These men now are in Jail. The reason for the postponement of Gen. Primo Rivera’s visit to Seville was the knowledge that the plot had been formed. Gen. Primo Rivera usu ally does not take undue precaution# with regard to his personal safety. Ho displays the greatest bravery w hen In attendance upon public func tions and show's almost reckless dis regard for the possibility of at tempts being made against his life. It is believed through the prompt action of the authorities a movement was stifled which might have had sinister effects in Spain, as numerous elements of the discontented are said to have been waiting an opportunity to start trouble. Rumors Are Thick. Political circles are filled with ru mors of the difficulties with‘which the government is faced, coming from various quarters. Poltteal ad herents attached to the former regime are known to be active behind the scenes in an effort to restore the previous Influence, while the military men are not absolutely in unison re garding the system adopted by the military directorate. Among the rumors, some of which are of a fantastic nature, may be mentioned one—that a strong ele ment, composed of army officers, has pointed out to the directorate that the members of the military govern ment are falling Into the old habit of attending banquets and receptions, instead of attending solely to the work of the government, and have expressed fear that they will eventu ally evolve into a new political party W'ith vices similar to those which preceded the September revolution. CO-ED’S POPULARITY LAID TO SELFISHNESS More Snubbing She Does More Sought After She Is, Says Analyst. PALO ALTO. Calif.. December 28. Only sixty co-eds at Leland Stanford University are “stellar steppera,” while the remaining 440 have to be ••ontent with but scattering atten tions from the 2.200 men in the insti tution, according to the Daily Palo Alto, a student publication. A ‘'stellar stepper" is, in college Parlance, a very popular girl. A recent letter to the paper signed * Patty Gray” offered an explanation -p* the position of the 440, and eg- Pfeseed to the ipan students curiosity as to the cause of the situation. “I wanted to know’ why Stanford men rushed sixty out of 500 women," said the communication. “Tou said that if I signed a promise never to break dates or substitute other girls < or neglect my old friends, why, you’d ! give me a rush like some of the j 'stellar steppers' receive. “It's too funny. All of these ‘stel- ! lar steppers’ break dates at the ; eleventh hour and fifty-ninth second, i Tt Is they alone who can afford to i substitute one from the 440 when a I more delectable date la perferred. J And only the star performers forget j old friends. And it’s queer as it's true that these earn* snubbed friends I grow more persistent One wants what one can’t have, you know. “The qualifications you hold up as desirable are the v,ry ones the non steppers posses.
