18 FOLEY CASE DEFENSE , ARGUMENT IS BEGUN State Testimony Ends in Alleged Bribery and Conspiracy by Hew Jersey Official. the Awociattd Pres*. NEW YORK, March 28—The de fense argument begins today in the trial of J. Harry Foley, state super intedent of weights and measure* in New Jersey; Maj. I. Katz and the Paterson Brewing and Malting Com pany on charges of bribery and con spiracy to bribe federal agents. Summing its case yesterday the prosecution alleged that bribes were given to obtain protection for the manufacture of beer and liquor in New Jersey and to obtain the co-op rration of federal agents in keeping Pennsylvania beer out of New Jersey. . Counsel for the defense said Foley’s contention would be that he had been led into the case by the agents who sought to collect graft from the breweries, and that Katz’s defense would be that federal agents threat ened to close his as well as all other New Jersey breweries unless the agents were paid to permit them to co-operate. Foley once was secre tary to former Gov. Edwards of New Jersey. 1,000 GIRLS EXPECTED AT CAMP FIRE PARLEY Seventeen States * and Seventy Cities to Be Represented at Meet ing in Kansas City Tomorrow. By the A woe If, ted Pre«*. LONDON, March 28. —A second at tack was made on British soldiers at Queenstown about an hour after the sanguinary onslaught last Friday on the unarmed partyYrom Spike Island, according to statements by some of the wounded, who were landed at Fishguard, Wales, yesterday. An armed party under Capt. Neville, they say, was sent ashore to ascertain if all those wounded by the machine gun bullets of the four assassins on the pier had been accounted for. The soldiers were marching along the pier when shots were fired from a neigh boring building, and Capt. Neville fell, severely wounded in the thigh. The soldiers immediately fired ma chine guns in the direction whence the bullets had come and a search was made tor the snipers, hot this was fruitless owing to the darkness. The wounded men also declare that some of the soldiers on Spike Island received letters from their sweet hearts ashore telling them not to land Friday, but that they disregarded the warning, believing it to be a Joke. The four men in the motorcar who attacked the unarmed party which first landed, were poor marksmen, the wounded say. or they could easily have killed all the party as they stood bunched on the pier. » MeGnth to Retain Seat.
