COMBINE IN DRIVE : FOR SAFE PACKING Government and Business . Agencies Unite to Prevent [ Stupendous Losses. Four Government departments and seven private organizations have joined in a move to eliminate loss of goods in transit,- due to poor pack ing, which cost the railroads alone during 1922 the sum of $11,&00,000, it was learned today at the Department of Commerce. Launched by the newly organized domestic commerce - division of the Commerce Department, the movement will be aided by the forest products laboratories of the Department of Agriculture, the Interstate Commerce Commission, the Post OfHce Depart ment and such private organizations as the Chamber of Commerce of the United States, the American Railway Association, the American Society for Testing Materials, the National Aerfb eiation of Box Manufacturers, the As sociated Co-operate Industries of the United States, the Wire-bound Box Manufacturers’ Association and the American Railway Express. Studies of the organizations co operating in researc.h work with a view to saving the millions of dol lars lost annually in shipment of goods have been inaugurated along two basic lines. First- of these is the need for stronger and better con tainers so as to reduce loss and damage in transit. Second is tlie need for cutting down constantly growing costs of distribution, in which packing plays an important part. John F. Keeley. representing the Commerce Department, is acting as liaison officer in the wqrk now being done, while representatives of the different organizations named are as August Sale of 0 LIFETIME FURNITURE I • ' 7 < ssrpen Cane Vanel Suite PJiree 'Pieces in/lJelour I7S "3 . ‘ 1 An attractive group in an antique ma hogany finish. The studies now being undertaken are a direct result of the investigations into export packing carried on by the Bureau of Foreign and Domestic Commerce several months ago at the suggestion of the House committee on merchant marine and fisheries. Rail carriers alone losl $5,000,000 in round numbers last year for re pairs to containers damaged in ship ment. according to Dr. Julius Klein, director of the bureau. "More than 5,000,000.000 containers, he said, are used in domestic shipping each year. LONDON HELD ALWAYS IN STATE OF VIBRATION Street Traffic, 40 Feet Below Sur face, Likely to Cause Damage to City. By the Associated Press. LONDON, August 6.—Right down to its clay foundation, 40 feet below the surface. London is In a constant state of viberation caused by Underground railways and increased street traffic, according to Prof. J. A. professor of electrical efi&ioeteripg .ip the University of bond . - ji the continual vibration will in time weaken the Structure'of buildings. Accurate measurements of sounds are taken by Prof. Fleming 'by re flecting light from the surface of a delicately suspended concave mirror onto a screen. "When a sound wave strikes this mirror Its vibrations strength is shown by movements backward and forward Os the ray of light on the screen. “In the early morning,” he “and late evenings. I have noticed that the vibration decreases with the lessening of the traffic.' This' univer sity building and every other one in London is gently rocking all day long."
