ACTRESS HATES ! WHITFSPROMISES Ann Luther Says Millionaire Promised Marriage and Financing of Career. By the Aswiattd Press. LOS ANGELES. August S.—Pro posals of marriage and promises of a well financed film career were made In a Pullman stateroom in which she and Jack White, wealthy mining man, were speeding westward toward Hollywood and the movies. Ann Luther, actress, has testified here in her sloo, noo suit against White for alleged breach of an agreement to star her in motion pictures. White told the superior court jury of 11 women and one man that it was Miss Luther who lured him across the continent to help her get started in the films and that it was only aftef they arrived here that he learned she was the wife of Ed Gallagher. Miss Luther remained on the stand all of yesterday to deny these accusa tions and she described In detail how White, after persuading her to go to California with him to be starred in pictures at his expense, filled the journey from New York to Holly wood with proposals that they go to Mexico and marry, although he had a Wife and child. She said White once told a jewelry clerk here that they had been mar ried. On one occasion, she said, he made love to her In Spanish, but whether he spoke in English Or Spanish he always declared himself eager to marry her and finance her career in the films. She. in turn, promised to be his wife, she testified. ABANDONED WAIF FOUND. Colored Female Infant Discovered in Clump of Bushes. A series of reverberations, caused by the explosion of enough high ex plosives taken together to fill a fre ght train 40 miles long, will rock the nation before long, and the Gov ernment is taking no steps to stop it. War-time explosives they are. 100.- 000,000 pounds of them, and bearing the forbidding name “pyrotol,” at that. When they are exploded hill sides will be tossed skyw'ard as though by a giant shovel; farmlands will he rocked, great trees will hurtle high in the air like matchstems and showers of debris will descend on the landscape, while thundering echoes resound from valley and hills miles distant. Fortunately the 100.000,000 pounds will not go off at once. A pound here, perhaps, and a couple of pounds there. The pound will shatter a great rock or uproot a large stump on otherwise valuable farm land, and the larger quantities will cleave paths through mountains and hills that obstruct free passage of com merce by automobile. The explosives, left over from the World War and robbed of their origi nal death-dealing objective, are to be ‘BEST LOOKERS’ COMPETE Twelve Women at Fete to Select Handsomest Man.
