16 SPAIN’S PRESTIGE HURT IN MOROCCO Even Hitherto Faithful Na tives Show Tendency to Join Revolt. BV W I lil.IA MK. NASH. By Katlio l« The St ir and Chicago Daily Now*. OI UK A IiTA K. September 3.—Mili tary events of the last .few weeks have dealt terrible reverses to Spain's prestige in Morocco. : .At Larache, on the Atlantic coast;’ across from Gibraltar: Tetuan. Tangier and other points behind the Spanish lines there have been partial uprising’s among tribes hitherto accounted faithful. However, there has been so tar no general uprising such as that an nounced in some I’aris and New York newspapers, and probably never will bo so long as Kaisuli lives. Itnixuli’M Power Great. This chieftain, who exercises a tremendous influence over the in habitants of northwest Morocco, is said to be bound to Spain with chains of gold. Kaisuli. however, is seri ously ill, and if he dies, as seems , likely, there is no chief who can hold | bis followers faithful to Spain. Already certain elements, such as | the ihniarosch about C ula, are be coming restless, and ihe natives oi ; Tangier itself steal down tile K'ft , and tight temporarily. This can be \ clone because of the mountainous n;.-, lure «* f the territory, the fighters! traveling by night and sleeping b> . day in lonely gullies. Tangier Is Cut Off. Tangier is practically cut off from | the rest of Morocco by land. An Kalian diplomat who went to Tetuan i last week by automobile reported I that he had got stuck and was unable] to return except by sea. The Amer- | jean charge d’affaires, who wanted to go quail hunting recently, was in- | formed that it was hot safe, as his j gunshots at the birds might draw the I lire of tribesmen. From Casbah. ’ the old sultan’s j palace up at the back of the town, j artillery fire and bombing can be heard occasionally. At night Spanish signal lights can be seen on the sur rounding mountains. Assistant Secretary Roosevelt re plied yesterday to the New York State Roosevelt-for-Governor League, which has invited him to run for the office, saying that to insure certain success for the Republican party in New York State in the coming election, it is necessary to keep,"open minds” as to the selection of a candidate until convention time. “It would be foolish for me or any other man to say that he did not wish to lie Governor of the great Empire State of New York.” Mr. Roosevelt said. “Next to the Presidency there is no greater office in the United States. What X do feel, however, more than this, is that it is necessary to elect a Republican governor this Au tumn. For that reason T believe we who are. in professional politics should keep our minds open until the time of the convention and then earnestly set ourselves to the task of selecting the man who best fits the situation and who is the most certain to lead the party to victory in November.” $137,500,000 IN FILMS PLANNED COMING YEAR .Program Announced for Motion Picture Concerns Operating in Los Angeles and Vicinity. BERLIN, .September 3.—Ten years after the battle of the lakes of East Prussia, Germany has just completed a week’s celebration at Tannenburg. Gens. Hindcnburg and Ludendorff and all the famous generals who were in the battle participated in the ceremony of laying the corner stone for a monument on the. battlefield near Hohenstein. Sixty thousand people were pres ent, representing all the patriotic as sociations of Germany and honor companies from military detach ments. The Relchswehr was repre sented -with Gen. Von Seeckt. According to an old custom, speak ers used three hammer blows to punctuate three trite phrases. Gen. Hindenburg said: "Remembrance for the fallen, un forgetfulness for the living and ex ample for future generations.” Maj. Gen. Kahns, leader of the local legion, spoke for "Reforging the era peror’a crown.” There was a troop review with no Republican flags in sight, only the black, white and red of the old empire.
