22 MOVES ARE MIXED IN STOCK-MARKET General List Changes but Little—lndividual Strong Spots Noted. BY STIART P. WEST. Special DUpt'rb to The Star,' XEW YORK. April 13. —Todays stock market had the appearance of doing a good deal more than tt did. J Actualy it got nowhere in -particular, i There were more individual points of | strength than of weakness, but in the main body prices changed very little and the market was more than ever left in the hands of professionals. Rail Share* Drags?. Chicago and Northwestern cont.nued to be pressed for sale at new low , prices, the Street ignoring comp etely j reassuring statements which were put j out last week regarding dividends. Shares of other - roads in the same territory were er ected—Northern Pacific and Gre*t Northern preferred and the whole railway list most of the time was dragging. Panama Cana! competi tion continued to he discussed as a more and more formidable factor for trans-continental lines. Selling broke out in Pennsylvania The best t-hat Pennsylvania’s earnings now- figure out) is between $3.50 and $4 a share as against $3 paid out in dividends. Oils Inclined to Sag. Oil shares were" distinctly disap pointing to the large following scattered all over the country. They were not noticeably weak, but most of them were inclined to sag Mar land Oil was more heavily sold than the others, this because the 1524 re port will be very poor, despite the fact that earnings during the first three months of 1925 were five to six times larger than during the entire 12 months of 1924. c Hudson Lend* Motors. Hudson was among the motors, getting up to a new high well above 47. “ The recently pub lished report _ for the first quarter made a big impression, especially in view of the extraordinary strength of the balance sheet. Higher dividends! have been discussed unofficially, but J the stock has been bought more on j the earnings situation than upon the possibility of increased dividends in the near future. The rise continued in Nash Mottrs. Maxwell Motors A appeared to have l eached it-s limit around 104, but the , K stock went forward nearly 3 points. Pierce-Arrow preferred also was in demand. Further testimony to the character of the much-advertised ‘oversubscription’’ to the t)odge Bros, issues was afforded when both bonds and stock were freely sup plied at their issue prices. Sugar at New Peak. American Sugar made a new high on the move above 68. The street has been talking about a dividend at the rate of $6 to be inaugurated in May. The possibility of a change of control was back of the rise in Ann Arbor preferred. Loews, Inc., got above 28 for the first tifhe. There was special buying in Famous Players and in Glidden Co. shares, the latter pn favorable earnings r-eport*. : Coca- Cola got into new high -ground above 88 *. French francs were ’still pausing, expressing satisfaction, on the one hand, that the ministry favoring so cialist measures to relieve the finan cial crisis was out of power, yet, on the other hand, realising- that, the critical problems of the French treas ury remained to be settled. Selling Is Significant. The most significant incident of the day was the continued selling of Frenth securities, dealt In on a dol lar basis in the New York market. French government Ss made. a. new low for the year. The 7 per cents. Vrhtch supposedly were "heavily • , ersubsecibed” .-last- November at 94. were traded in around 86. Department of ' tTfd Seine bonds sold at the lowest for tall lime as. they broke 83. All this was not mere spec ulative selling. The explanation commonly given for the recent weakness .in Pennsylvania was that earnings were tmsattsrfactofy and were none too far above divdend demands. A further reaspn, as the selling in the stock appeared again to day. was the increasing formidable competition from tfie new Nickel PlAte. Coca-Cola Prominent. Coca-CBla continued to occupy a t prominent place among the special- ! ties. It was estimated that the earn-* insrs report for the first three months j of 1925 would show $2.50 a share on ! the common, or at the rate of $lO a ! year. Dividends on the junior stock, are $7 annually. ” ’ • The sharp was partly at the expense of a linger ing short interest and carried the siock up around its highest for the year. Through transportation • and storage economies American Ice has been able to effect a saving on its in creased yearly production and also ex, pand its plant facilities to take care of increased business-. - Earnings per -hare last year were only a. little. legs iban for 1923.
