OFFENDED IN NEW YOHK. NEW YORK. Mat' 11.—Displays of artistic temperament that cropped out before the curtain of the Metropolitan Opera House last season have now set a-wagging the tongues of Vienna operagoers. In Vienna, as here, the central figure of gossip is Marie J eritza. W hile singing "Die Walkure" in Vienna, Mme. Olzewska. a Polish diva, was annoyed by conversation and laughter of Mme. Jeritza and two •friends in the wings. Twice Olzewska j • ailed out loudly, but the gig gling did not abate. Thereupon she | expressed herself more vigorously. Both Jeritza and Olzewska com plained to the management. The up shot was that Olzewska consulted a I lawyer and appealed to the public j through the newspapers. \ Jeritza's New York artistic adver- i sary wav the tenor Gigli. Last Win ler. in “Fedora.” Gigli, in one scene, was supposed to throw Jeritza to the door. He was so vigorous that the •lunoesque diva went into the foot lights. Later in the season, at the close of "La Tosca." Gigli took the first cur tain call alone. After fully 10 minutes Jeritza appeared in tears, muttering. “He's mean to me.” Baron von Popper. Jeritza's hus band. said that his wife had been "deeply offended." ■—^pT~ r IS \M cbaks & (gmpaiQ) \ i S‘ A' < 'T PENNSYLVANIA AVENUE SEVENTH STPEET ~~^fcz± ~ Mni— Straw now batting for Felt!
